It’s been a good year for Temple University in Singapore and the Temple University Alumni Association of Singapore (TUAAS). Not only did we see the first batch of MSHRM and Executive MBA (EMBA) students successfully complete their studies, we also grew the size of the current cohorts, which will ultimately result in larger number of Temple Alumni being based in Singapore. On this note, I would like to encourage all Temple Students and Alumni to join the TUAAS Holiday Party on Thursday, December 13 at the Tanglin Club. Spouses and significant others are welcome. This is a great opportunity to jointly celebrate and reflect back on 2012. On behalf of the Executive Committee of TUAAS, I would like to wish you and your loved ones Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year! CLASS NOTES

MEET THE PROFESSOR

Dr. Rajan Kalidindi (EMBA class of 2012) has accepted a new position with General Electric (GE) as ECLP (Experienced Commercial Leadership Program) at Corporate Enterprise. The new role starts at the first of the year.

December’s EMBA Professor - Dr. Mark Gershon teaching “Managing Operations in the Enterprise”

A little known fact about you?I have always been very involved in sports, competing, refereeing and coaching. In high school, I attracted attention from college coaches in both basketball and track, and was included in the USTA junior tennis rankings. Later I refereed high school basketball games and coached a high school track team. Now I compete in Masters (over-the-hill) track competitions, having been ranked as high as 3rd in the United States in the triple jump and 5th in the long jump. (Maybe we can schedule this class at the time of a meet in Singapore?) In the summers, I am also the Athletics Director at a children’s camp in upstate New York.

What should students get from this course? The primary goal of this introductory course on Operations is to get a feel for the central role of Operations in any organization. More specifically, we cover the many types of operational issues that are encountered so that students will be able to interact with Operations people or maybe even fill one these roles. Finally, since the course is quantitative, the student should leave with

an increased level of quantitative skills and a better vision of the value of quantitative tools.

Most common misconception about this class? Some people come in thinking that this is a math course. It is not. It is a course based on common sense. No new math skills are learned, but simple quantitative tools are used.

Anna Mallon (EMBA class of 2012) and her husband Nick De Castro welcomed daughter Malia Leilani on November 20. Malia joins her older brother, Tony.

Nadia Espinosa (EMBA class of 2013) was married at the historic Batu Caves Temple in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia in September 2012. The couple will be celebrating with a catholic wedding exactly one year after the first wedding.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

On behalf of the organizing committee, Four Seasons Singapore, Regent Singapore and FSAP Corporate Office, I am proud to share an overview of the Run For Hope 2012:

On November 18th, in our 20th year of organizing a run for cancer research in Singapore, 10,000 participants turned out for the dramatic city centre 3.5km and 10km events. The event has grown over the years and

has developed a loyal following, but this year’s event marked record registration and the first time in this high profile location, with stunning views of iconic landmarks such as Marina Bay Sands, the Singapore Flyer, Gardens By the Bay and Esplanade Theatre.

Employees from both hotels and FSAP passionately devoted their time and energy to organizing and supporting all aspects of this event; the run is the climax of our efforts throughout the year which included more than 20 creative fundraising efforts organized by employees such as karaoke, shoulder massages, on-line jumble sales and my personal favorite - live action Angry Birds (you’d have to see it to understand!).

S$411,846 was donated to the National Cancer Centre Research Fund.

We added a fun new element this year - the Executive Challenge, with invited participants representing their companies.

Celebrities from InHerShoes and comedians Richie Budhrani and Sharul Channa also emceed at the event to spread cheer and positivity. The stage and carnival were at The Padang, in the core Singapore’s business district, surrounded by historic landmarks

Jeff Rednour (EMBA class of 2013) - Chair of the Run for Hope 2012 charity race

Editors note:Jeff is to be commended. He was in class the Sunday the event took place so he pulled double duty on the Sunday. That’s real commitment!

such as the Supreme Court and Saint Andrew’s Cathedral.

40 performers comprising of local musicians, cancer survivors/caregivers and Minister of Parliament Mr Baey Yam Keng released a new remix of the recording “Lean On You”, a catchy tune about how everyone is in the fight against cancer altogether and this fight will and shall be won.
