Byggelit – TEMPO VÄRMEGOLVSYSTEM

FUNCTION TESTED BY SP, THE TECHNICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF SWEDENTempo underfloor heating is one part of a system for water underfloor heating. Consult a plumber before beginning installation. Tempo Värmegolv underfloor heating has been function tested by SP, the Technical Research Institute of Sweden, and approved by SP Certification. Functional approval SC 0123-16 applies if these installation instructions are followed.

Tempo Värmegolv underfloor heating, including the heat diffusing plates and pipes, and top flooring (a surface layer of at least 7 mm laminate), is approved for housing in category A in accordance with these instructions. Tempo Värmegolv can thus be used as a weight-bearing subfloor on wooden battens before laying a floor surface, according to these instructions. The particleboards in the system are manufactured according to class with P6 quality (standard paticleboard) and P7 quality (moisture resistant particleboard).

Tempo Värmegolv is also approved for punch-through safety in accordance with the requirements of the Swedish Work Environment Authority. These state that surfaces which may be accessible during construction must have enough load-bearing capacity to prevent punch-throughs and falls

LOAD CATEGORY A The construction principles in these instructions fulfil the requirements for load category A according to EN 1991-1-1 and EKS 10.

Areas of use in category A include domestic and residential use, such as apartment buildings and houses, hospital bedrooms and wards, bedrooms in hotels and hostels, kitchens and toilets.

Product description: Covering format 600x1800 and 1200x595 mm, respectively. Batten distance, max c/c 600 mm. Groove and return panels and are supplied in P6 and P7 (moisture resistant) qualities. P6 is approved for climate class 1, while P7 is approved for climate classes up to 2, but only during installation.

Begin the installation with a return panel that is trimmed where necessary, and installed with the long edge along the battens. Leave a gap to allow movement along all walls and barriers. The included ready-grooved tongue and groove panels are mounted across the battens. The short joints are adjusted in relation to each other in neighbouring rows. If they end up between the same pair of battens, the distance between the short joints must be at least 200 mm.

The return panel has no tongue and groove profile on the long sides, so it is flexible for varying batten intervals. This means it is important that you also cut off the tongue and groove on the grooved panel where it joins the straight edge of the return panel, and that the joint that is glued and screwed is on the centre of the batten. The grooved panel does not generally need to be jointed on the battens (e.g. if you have chosen to only use grooved panels and make the return bends yourself). If you mill the return panels yourself, the inner diameter of the return groove should rest on at least 10 mm of a batten. See separate instruc-tions for milling return panels on www.byggelit.se

The panels must be supported by a batten or strut along all walls. The panels must be screwed using

one row of screws in each batten and strut. Panels are screwed with four screws in each batten.

Screw type: Particleboard screw 4.2x55 or equivalent.

Glue: The panels must be carefully glued, both in the joints and on the battens. There must be enough glue for an excess to be pressed into the joint when the panels are fit together. Excess glue must be removed before it dries. Calculate approx. 1.3 litres of glue for 10 sq. m. floor area.

Type of glue: When installing standard P6 panels, use PVAc glue class D2 or D1 depending on the temperature. For temperatures over +10°C use Cascol Indoor 3304 or similar, and at tempe-ratures below +10°C use Cascol Winter 3303 or similar. When installing P7 moisture resistant panels, use a moisture resistant PVAc glue class D3, such as Cascol Outdoor 3337, SikaBond 540 or similar.

The heat diffusing plates are placed with intervals of 10-15 mm between each one.

Vacuum the grooves carefully before installing the heating plates and pipes.

Installation, step 1 Wait to install the return panels at the end of the side where the heating pipes enter. Start at the other end of the room by adjusting the length and width of the return panel in the first return pocket.

To make maximum use of the return panel you should, if possible, ensure that the distance between the battens in the first and last batten area is 600 mm from the wall to the centre of the second batten. Make sure the return groove is above a batten (the return groove’s inner radius should be at least 10 mm in on the batten).

Cut the tongue and groove on the short side of the grooved panels that will be placed against the straight edge of the return panel. The straight edges of the grooved panel and the return panel should be glued and screwed to each other in the middle of the batten. Leave a gap to allow movement along all walls and barriers. Now finish installing the grooved and return panels.

Installation, step 2 The last return panel pocket is cut and pipes are laid in the underfloor heating system at the red mark below (X), in consultation with a plumber.

Cut and adapt the width of the return panel in relation to the distance between the battens on the last pocket. The return panels are supplied with holes for incoming and outgoing pipes. The holes used for the pipes to go through must be cut at an angle (A) underneath. This is to avoid damage to the heating pipes (see below picture).

NB! Don’t forget that if new holes are needed for pipes, they should also be angled!

NB! Don’t forget a 10 mm gap for movement next to walls/outer barriers. Also ensure the return groove is above a batten or strut (the return groove’s inner radius should be at least 10 mm in on the batten) (B).

SAVE MATERIAL!Battens are normally placed at intervals of 600 mm. The distance between the last batten and the wall may be less than 600 mm, so the return panel needs cutting. One suggestion is to have a 600 mm distance to the first batten and to the last one, and to allow the shorter distance to end up somewhere in the middle of the floor, so using all of the return panel. As the groo- ved panels can be joined anywhere on the battens this can be done in the rest of the room.

LAMINATE OR SOLID WOOD FLOORSLaminate or solid wood floors (at least 7 mm thick), are installed floating on the panels in the same direction as them, i.e. at right angles to the underlying battens. First put a layer of building paper above the underfloor heating. If a vapour barrier is necessary, this should be located according to the top flooring’s instructions. Make sure that, wherever possible, the top flooring’s joins are not above those of the subfloor.

PLASTIC FLOORING OR LINOLEUMWhen plastic or linoleum will be the top flooring, an intermediate floor of Byggelit particleboard, minimum 16 mm, must be used. The floor should be laid floating, with building paper between the particlebo-ards and the floating floor (see picture below). Byggelit’s Flytande golv (floating floor) is manufactured accor-ding to P2 quality.

The intermediate flooring panels are laid with at least 200 mm staggered short joints and a 10 mm gap for movement along all walls and fixed objects. The floor is glued in the tongues and grooves using PVAc glue class D2, such as Cascol Indoor 3304 or similar. The amount of glue used should be enough that a small amount of excess is pressed out during installation. This excess is then wiped off.

Wherever possible, avoid having the long joints on the floating floor above the long joints of the grooved panels. Stagger the floating floor’s short joints by at least 100 mm in relation to the underlying short joints on the grooved panels.

Where necessary, all joints should be sanded before the top flooring is laid. Avoid using spackle, as the moisture in the spackle is absorbed and may remain in the panel for a while after the surface of the spackle has dried. If the remaining moisture is trapped below a non-permeable floor, it may have a negative effect on the floor’s evenness.

INSTALLING BYGGELIT’S ROT FLOORThe ROT floor (A) has a covering format of 580 x 1800 mm and is installed along the grooved floor. Start installation at the end of the floor where the grooved panel’s fitted insert is located. Avoid placing the ROT floor’s long joints straight above the grooved panels’ long joints. Stagger the ROT floor’s short joints by at least 200 mm in relation to the underlying short joints on the grooved panels. Byggelit’s ROT floor is manufac-tured according to quality P2.

The ROT floor is screwed in the grooved panels in a square pattern of around 200 mm and with the first screws, if possible, about 20 mm from the edge of the ROT floor. The length of the particleboard screws must be at least 30 mm

The panels are carefully glued in all joints and the amount of glue should be enough for a small excess to be pressed out of the joint when the panels are joined together. Excess glue must be removed before it dries. Calculate approx. 1.0 litres of glue for 10 sq. m. floor area. Use PVAc glue class D2, e.g. Cascol Indoor 3304.

REMEMBER• Check that the panels are conditioned before installation.

• Check that the construction is moisture-proof.

• Ensure that there is a gap for movement around all walls and barriers.

• If only grooved panels are used and the pipes are to be turned manually with a router, the battens/studs must be positioned so the pipe bends are supported. Mill the pipe bends before installing the grooved panels. The milled grooves may not differ from the original grooves in terms of width (18.6 mm), depth (18.2 mm), or radius (8.0 mm) for 17 mm pipes. Install the panel so the turn in the pipes is above the batten. See separate installation instructions, Tempo Fräsmall at www.byggelit.se.

• The return panels are supplied with holes for incoming and outgoing pipes. Remember that the holes selected for use with pipes must be angled underneath to avoid damaging the heating pipe.

• Note that the grooved and return panels in P7 quality are of climate class 2 during installation. The entire construction with the selected top flooring fulfils climate class 1.

MATERIAL AMOUNTSThis is how you calculate the amount of material you need: grooved and return panels, plates and pipes in a room that measures 4.0 x 8.0 m.

NB! Check with your circulation pump supplier to ensure you do not exceed the maximum pipe loop length. One recommendation for 17 mm pipe is that one loop, incl. to and from the distributor, should not exceed 90 m.

NB! A calculation program is also available at www.byggelit.se

4.0 m.

1.2 m.

0.595 m. 6.8 m. 0.595 m.

8.0 m.

Return panels must be used at both ends of the room. For example: If the room is 4.0 m wide and each return panel covers a width of 1.2 m, you need 3.3 return panels at each end of the room = 7 in total.

The area remaining between the return panels must be covered with grooved panels. Because there is little wastage when laying the panels, do as follows: The 8.0 m length of the room is now reduced by the length of the return panels = 0.595 m at both ends of the room = 1.2 m. The remaining length 6.8 m x width 4.0 m = 27.2 m². One grooved panel covers 1.08 m² (600x1800 mm) and so (27.2 m²:1.08 m²) = 26 in total.

Heat diffusion plates: Each sq. m. of finished floor uses 4.3 heat diffusion plates. In this example, 4.0 m x 8.0 m = 32 m² x 4.3 plates = 138.

Pipes: Each sq. m. of finished floor uses around 5.3 lpm pipe + pipes to and from the heat distributor. In this case, 5.3 x 32 m² = 170 lpm + the number of lpm to and from the distributor.

HANDLING INSTRUCTIONS TEMPO VÄRMEGOLVSSYSTEM

GeneralBefore installing the panels, it is important that they are conditioned in the climate in which they will be used. The moisture ratio in the panels may not exceed 8% when the top floor is laid.

Protection during transportWhen being transported outside, the panels must be protected, e.g. with a tarpaulin, so that they are not exposed to dirt and precipitation. Panels with tongue and groove edges may, if they are exposed to long-term high humidity, be damaged in a manner that makes installation difficult. For the same reason, panels should generally be handled with care.

Protection during storageParticleboards should be stored indoors. Storage outdoors should be brief and the particleboards must be carefully covered, e.g. with a tarpaulin, so they are protected from precipitation. Good ventilation is necessary if they are covered.

Particleboards must be stored flat and on a level surface. NB! Particleboards must never be stored straight on the ground without a moisture barrier. There must be a surface that means the particleboards are at least 10 cm above the ground.

The best storage conditions are +15–25°C and 50–65 % relative humidity (RH). RH may not exceed 80% in the long-term.

P6 (standard quality)Tempo grooved and return panels marked quality class P6 are intended for use in dry indoor environments. They must not be used outdoors or in such a manner that they are exposed to moisture or very humid air.

P7 (moisture resistant quality)Tempo grooved and return panels marked quality class P7 are intended for use in climate classes 1 and 2, i.e. both dry indoor environments and environments with air humidity exceeding 85% RH (for a few weeks per year). However, the panels must not be exposed to water in the form of precipitation or in any other way without protection.

If the floor is to be used as a platform floor it must be protected from moisture with a tarpaulin or similar. Climate class 1 is characterised by a moisture ratio in the material that is equivalent to a temperature of 20°C and a relative humidity in excess of 65% for just a few weeks per year. (EN 1995-1-1:2004) Climate class 2 is characterised by a moisture ratio in the material that is equivalent to a temperature of 20°C and a relative humidity in excess of 85% for just a few weeks per year. (EN 1995-1-1:2004)

FormaldehydeTempo Värmegolv is certified in accordance with the E1 standard for formaldehyde emissions.
