"I want to help someone else"
How dare you!I need this…this is mine
Christians in America
"The world will hate youIt hated me first…
You're gonna have troubleIn this world"- Jesus
Favored Status
And now…We're officially offended
(Because we're AmericanAnd our culture disciples us)
Cakes and Flowers, Oh my!
Purpose trumps offense
Purpose trumps offense
When we know What we're about-
And it's not us-We become unoffendable
Jesus calls his peopleTo be unoffendable
For his glory and purposes
Jesus sends out the 12:(Luke 9:4)
And whatever house you enter, stay there, and from
there depart…
…And wherever they do not receive you, when you leave that town shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them”
Don't make it about youAnd get all offended
God will deal with itMove on with what GodHas called you to do
The Offense is aboutSomething Temporary
Our Call is aboutSomething Eternal
By the way, a vague Passive-Aggressive FB Post saying,
"Shaking off the dust"
Is the definition ofMonkeys and Circus
And they departed and went through the villages, preaching
the gospel and healing everywhere- Luke 9:4-6
Distraction thru self-righteous anger is a tool of the enemy
That makes us forget-It's not all about us…Not even close!
I'm upset that I can'tHave my Christian calendar
At work anymore
Yet she wears a hajib!
Jesus calls his peopleTo be unoffendable
For his glory and purposes
Jesus= Real DealTeachings, Miracles, Authority
Hospitality= HUGESamaritans= Diff. Worship
When the days drew near for Jesus to be taken up, he set
his face to go to Jerusalem
And he sent messengers ahead of him, who went and entered a village of the Samaritans, to make preparations for him
But the people did not receive him, because his face was set
toward Jerusalem
Worship where?
And when his disciples James and John saw it, they said…
“Lord, do you want us to tell fire to come down from heaven
and consume them?”
But he turned and rebuked them. And they went on to another village- Luke 9:51-56"There's another village…""That's not the point!"
Purpose trumps offense
When we know What we're about-
And it's not us-We become unoffendable
Purpose: Glorify God
"Father, the hour has comeGlorify your son that your sonMight glorify you…"- John 17:1
For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn
the world, but in order that the world might be saved
through him- John 3:17
Purpose:Seek and Save
Jesus calls his peopleTo be unoffendable
For his glory and purposes
Samaria rejectsSo that it can later accept
Philip went down to the city of Samaria and proclaimed to
them the Christ
And the crowds with one accord paid attention to what was being said by Philip when they heard him and saw the signs that he did
For unclean spirits, crying out with a loud voice, came out of
many who had them, and many who were paralyzed or lame
were healed
So there was much joy…- Acts 8
Man's offense would have Scorched what God's grace
Longed to redeem
Culturally:
Our offense scorchesWhat God's graceLongs to Redeem
Personally:
My offense can scorchWhat God's graceLongs to Redeem
So Jesus said:
"No…you don't get to beOffended and follow me"
“Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop
him, because he does not follow with us”
"Who do they thinkThey are?!?
We're the realJesus-followers!"
We're offended! We didn't give them
permission!
But Jesus said to him, “Do not stop him, for the one who is not against you is for you”- Luke 9:49-50
No one has cornered The market on Truth
Humility produces unityThat glorifies God
Pride produces offenseThat leads to division
Which is Jesus interested in?
Offended: They aren't with us!
Missing the Real Truth:People are being set free…
Any time I make it about meAnd my sensibilities
I lose sight ofThe bigger picture
Cakes and Flowers
Jesus calls his peopleTo be unoffendable
For his glory and purposes
So Jesus said:
"No…you don't get to beOffended and follow me"
Yeah, but…That person at that other
church said…
About me and I'm angry!
They way they treat me at workMakes me want to scream…!
Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often will my brother
sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as
seven times?”
At what pointDo I get offended
And let 'em have it?
I'm willing to go 7 times!
Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times.
Jesus calls his peopleTo be unoffendable
For his glory and purposes
Be unoffendable
- Doesn't imply trust
Be unoffendable
- Doesn't mean things stay same
Be unoffendable
- Means I relinquish my rightsAnd choose to forgive
“Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants…"
"This is what life is likeIn my Kingdom
With me as your King"
When does this begin?
When he began to settle, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents
And since he could not pay, his master ordered him to be sold,
with his wife and children and all that he had, and
payment to be made
So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything’
And out of pity for him, the master of that servant released
him and forgave him the debt
Grace. Unearned. Undeserved.
But when that same servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii, and seizing him, he began to choke him, saying, ‘Pay what you owe’
He's…Angry
OffendedTaking it Personally
So his fellow servant fell down and pleaded with him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you’
He refused and went and put him in prison until he should
pay the debt
Justice: What he gave outGrace: What he was shown
When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their master all that had taken place
Then his master summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked
servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded
with me
And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?’
Definition of Wicked:
Allowing personal offenseTo get in the way of giving theSame Forgiveness and Grace
We've been shown
And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?’
"…forgiving…as God in Christ forgave you"- Eph. 4:32
God requires of usThat we would give
To undeserving others
What we have undeservinglyReceived From him
And in anger his master delivered him to the jailers, until
he should pay all his debt
Glad this is a human King
So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart”- Matt. 18:21-35
How many timesDo I have to forgive
And lay aside my rightTo be offended?
How many timesWill your Father continue to
Forgive your sins
And lay aside his rightTo judge you unworthy?
But what aboutActual offense?
What- I let 'em get awayWith it?
Impossible standard, right?
- Reject current culture- Trade ego for humility- Know Jesus died for everyone- Purpose: glory and hearts
Anytime you and IDo what God has called us to do
We are empowered By the Spirit he gave us
Jesus calls his peopleTo be unoffendable
For his glory and purposes
Would my family and friendsSay I'm easily offended?
Hard to offend?Or unoffendable?
What needs to change?
Am I willing to be more aboutGod's glory and God's Purposes Than my ego?
As a Church…We shrug it off
And continue to serve
Because the only thing Permanent is our Christ
