Brooklyn Community Theatre

Brooklyn Community Theatre was founded in 1999 by Peter Hughes and Ray Bontoft. We are an incorporated non profit organisation who rely on the tireless hardwork of our volunteers and the goodwill of our sponsors and supporters to bring a quality open air theatrical production each year to the beautiful community of Brooklyn. Each production represents a huge effort not only from our wonderful cast but also from the generous souls who give up their time to build our stage and set, to set up and run the sound and lighting, and organise costumes, props, publicity, ticketing, catering and transport. We keep ticket prices low to ensure that Theatre in the Park remains accessible to all; revenue from ticket sales covers our annual production costs including insurance, park and equipment hire, courtesy buses, costumes and props. In 2011 we had to dispose of the majority of our (donated) stage and set materials which had become unsound after 10 years of use. If it were not for the generous sponsorship received from The Mud Crabs (Brooklyn Rugby Club), the Bendigo Berowra and District Community Bank Branch and Bert and Anke Kupers, from the Brooklyn Motel, we would not have been able to replace these materials and continue on... to these sponsors we offer our sincere and heartfelt thanks.

After being involved in countless Theatre in the Park productions as understudy to the stars, I’ve finally cracked it into the big time! Although initially hesitant I was reassured by the Director, of whom I have the greatest respect, that I could overcome my shy and introverted nature. Only time will tell! I must say that the casting couch was an interesting experience, I really felt as one with the Director.

To prepare myself for this role I had to lay off the maid and the cook. Getting my hands dirty was the only way to really get to know my character. Strangely I found nagging came to me naturally and now that I have started it is going to be pretty hard to stop. I found the experience challenging (my nails are ruined!) so I will be re-hiring the house staff and resuming my life as a lady of leisure. I would like to thank my late father who gave me a wonderful foundation in all things cockney and a good dose of Chas ’n’ Dave which I have found extremely valuable for this role.

Here we go again... What gets to me, is that this Agatha Christie woman has never even met me. Not that I’m aware. Perhaps I hadn’t even been born! I certainly wasn’t. Yet, here she goes and writes a play, and creates a part that suits me to a tee. Or should I say ‘beer and skittles’. The only problem is there are too many lines, and I may forget some! But I think she also thought of that, allowing me to take refreshment, and hoover about the bar, whenever I choose during the whole play. Clever woman this Christie. Who would have thought!!!

This year I was told by the Director that I was “not suited” for any roles, but I knew, it was only a matter of time before he saw the error of his ways and here I am!! Once again starring on the stage, with no less than God on my side!! With a bee in my bonnet and the bible in my hand, move over Sir Lawrence, I’m here to stay... the Anglers Rest Retirement Village for Bewildered Actors can wait!

A damaged doctor with a dark past and a drinking problem; misdirection or a case of life imitating art? In the final analysis, if you’re already on the path to perdition what’s the harm in a few more for the road. No point worrying that you can’t swim... it’s the fall that’s gonna kill you. Donnie Maclurcanas Anthony Marston

‘Discovered’ by Peter Hughes whilst banging out the national anthem at a Brooklyn trivia night to win a six pack of beer, Donnie was a last minute ring-in from the USA. He hasn’t taken it personally, which means he’s well cast to play a rich, arrogant, aloof Londoner. He maintains that his former theatrical roles (as a pyromaniac and an elf) have had only minor influence over his confidence.

ln my opinion; this is what eventuates when one receives a classical education and is then allowed to roam the world at large, unchaperoned, as an arts dilletante. One cannot be held accountable for the mischief set afoot... As I told Mrs Worthington when I first met her daughter - there really isn’t anything one would rather be doing, and doing it under the stars, oft by moonlight, or by candlelight, the wick is burning at both ends no less... O Agatha, you dear old thing. Pour me another whisky my love. By the way Pedro, what are all these people doing here?

Having been involved with Brooklyn Community Theatre for some time, Noel was absolutely thrilled when the Director invited him to take part in this play. However, to tell you the truth, when he discovered that the role depicted the character of an elderly gentleman who was going slightly ‘dotty’, he had second thoughts. “Am I being typecast?” Regardless, he agreed to take part and seems to have fallen into the role quite comfortably. Sometimes in life one has to bite the bullet, put your best foot forward. Noel is not sure which particular foot that is, but will attempt to sort it out on the night. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
