    Ten Principles of Success

By studying the life of the Prophet (pbuh) we can

derive ten important principles which hefollowed. In short, the Prophet of Islam was apositive thinker in the full sense of the word. Heknew how to "pick his battles". All his activitieswere result-oriented.He completely refrained from

steps that were counter-productive. These are thequalities which make forgreatness. We can besuccessful in our own livesby implementing theseprinciples when possible.

Examine how the following ten principles used bythe Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) can help you in

    your daily life.

    1. To Begin From thePossible

This principle is explained in a saying ofAishah. She said: "Whenever the Prophet

,had to choose between two options he."always opted for the easier choice (Al-

    Bukhari)

To choose the easiest option means to beginfrom the possible and one who begins fromthe possible will surely reach his goal.

To work from the point of least resistanceenables one to work 'smart' without wastingresources.

    2. To See Advantage inDisadvantage

In the early days of Mecca, there were manyproblems and difficulties. At that time, aguiding verse in the Qur'an was revealed. Itsaid:

Fa inna - : - .ma al usri yusraa Inna ma al usri yusraa

"With every hardship there is ease, with everyhardship there is ease."(Qur'an 94:5-6)

If there are problems, there are alsoopportunities. Turn a liability into an assetwith creative and resourceful thinking. Keepan open mind for the possibilities.

    3. To Change the Place ofAction

This principle is derived from the Hijrah. Hijrahwas not just a migration from Mecca to Medina. It was to find a more conducive point fromwhich to establish and practice Islamicprinciples. This also leads back to the first

    principle.

Wa many-yuhaajir fee SabeeliLLaahi yajid filardi mu-raagaman kaseeranw-wa saah.Wa many-yakhruj mim-baytihee muhaa-jiran ilaLLaahi wa Rasoulihee thummayudrik-hul-mawtu faqad waqaa ajruhou alaLLaah; Wa kaanaLLaahu Gafourar-Raheemaa. Whoever migrates in the way of Allah shall find on the earth many aplace to settle, and a wide dimension (of resources). Whoever leaves his homemigrating for the sake of Allah and His Messenger, and death overtakes him, then, his reward is established with Allah. Allah is Most-Forgiving, Very-Merciful.(Quraan 4:100)

    4. To Make a Friend Out of anEnemy

The prophet of Islam was repeatedly subjected topractices of antagonism by the unbelievers. Atthat time the Qur'an enjoined upon him thereturn of good for evil. And then, as the Qur'anadded,

Wa laa tastawil-hasanatu wa las-sayyiah. Idfabillateehiya ahsanu faizallazee baynaka wa baynahou adaawatun

kaannahou waliyyun hameem."You will see your direstenemy has become your closest friend."(Qur'an 41:34)

It means that a good deed in return of a bad deedhas a conquering effect over your enemies. Andthe life of the Prophet is a historical proof of thisprinciple.

    5. To Turn Minus into Plus

After the Battle of Badr, about 70 of theunbelievers were taken as the prisoners ofwar. They were educated people. TheProphet announced that if any one of them

would teach ten Muslim children how toread and write he would be freed.

This was the first school in the history of Islamin which all of the students were Muslims,

and all of the teachers were from the enemyranks. As has been said about the Prophet(pbuh): "He faced adversity with the

determination to wring success out of."failure

    6. The Power of Peace isStronger Than the Power of

ViolenceWhen Mecca was conquered, all of the

Prophet's opponents were brought beforehim. They were war criminals, in every

sense of the word. But the Prophet did notorder them to be killed.

He simply said: "Go, you are free."The resultof this kind behaviour was miraculous. Theyimmediately accepted Islam.

    7. Not to be a DichotomousThinker

In the famous Ghazwa of Muta, Khalid bin Waliddecided to withdraw Muslim forces from thebattlefield because he discovered that the enemyoutnumbered them. When they reached Medina, some of the Muslims received them by the word "O

Furrar (O deserters!)" The Prophet said "No. Theyare Kurrar (men of advancement)." Those Medinanpeople were thinking dichotomously, either fightingor retreating. The Prophet said no. There is also athird option, and that is to avoid war and find a time

to strengthen. Choose your battles. Now historytells us that the Muslims, after three years ofpreparation, advanced again towards the Romanborder and this time they won a resounding victory.

    8. To Bring the Battle inOne's Own Favourable Field

This principle is derived from the Ghazwa ofHudaibiyya. At that time, the unbelieverswanted to engage the Muslims in fighting, because they were in an advantageousposition. The Prophet, by accepting their

conditions unilaterally, entered into a pact. Itwas a ten-year peace treaty. Until then, themeeting ground between Muslims and non-Muslims had been on the battlefield. Now the

area of conflict became that of ideologicaldebate. Within two years, Islam emerged asvictorious because of the simple reason of itsideological superiority.

    9. Gradualism Instead ofRadicalism

This principle is well-established by a hadithof Al-Bukhari. Aishah says that the firstverses of the Qur'an were related mostly toheaven and hell. And then after a long time

when the people's hearts had softened andtheir faith strengthen, the specificcommands to desist from adultery anddrinking were revealed in the Qur'an.

This is a clear proof that for social changes,Islam advocates the evolutionary method, rather than the revolutionary method.

    10. To Be Pragmatic inControversial Matters

During the writing of Hudaibiyyah treaty, theProphet dictated these words: "This is fromMuhammad, the Messenger of God." TheQurayshi delegate raised objections over

these words. The Prophet promptly changed the wording

and ordered simply Muhammad, son ofAbdullah.

and we can besuccessful in this life ...and the next,
