A Presentation at the 2016 ETHOS Conference inSeattle-Kirkland, WA, USA 29-31 January 2015

Abstract (expanded)The quite recent worldwide enthusiasm for Top-Lit UpDraft (TLUD) micro-gasification has stimulated

numerous independent TLUD activities. The TLUD projects that have DIRECT involvement by Dr TLUD are summarized by geographic area, including their interrelationships via Paul Anderson. Others are invited to join.A. Africa: 1. Uganda and Kenya: Awamu Biomass Energy is revisiting and refining the TChar variation of TLUDs, including incorporating the Jiko Koa charcoal stove by Burn Manufacturing.

2. Ghana: The Ghana Gasifier Stove Network is already operational with production of ND (Natural Draft) TLUDs, some FA (Fan Assisted) TLUDs, local fuels of pellets (by Abellon) and bamboo, with pilot projects in selected communities.

3. South Africa: Ekasi Energy is developing its FAABulous (Fan Assisted Appliance Base) product including a US$10 TLUD-FA gasifier, 3 options of electrical power in its appliance base, and associated household amenities.

4. Cameroon, Sierra Leone, and Ethiopia: Solid contacts are leading to new initiatives.B. Latin America:

5. Guatemala: TLUD stoves and biochar for environmental protection (and human health) in the basin of Lake Atitlan.

6. Haiti: TLUD stoves with low-density briquette fuel, with biochar for anthropedogenesis on weak Haitian soil.C. Multi-national efforts about types of micro-gasification:

7. India and USA: Continuing efforts for development of a TLUD-RH-F2A stove (TLUD for rice husk fuel with forced secondary air).

8. Bangladesh and Canada: Work with Mahbubul Islam and Canadian Julien Winter for TLUD stoves with clay and brick components for lower costs.

9. Guatemala, El Salvador, USA (Hawaii & Illinois), Ghana and Brazil: Controlled Covered, Continuous Cavity (C4) kilns using “flame curtain” techniques for biochar production, with special emphasis on bamboo feedstock.

10. Portugal and USA: A high-end, moderate-priced continuous-operation gasifier w/ multiple burners.

The TLUD Revolution is Arriving!!• See the TLUD History document at

drtlud.com/tlud-history (Version 2.0 with photos)• The quite recent worldwide enthusiasm for Top-Lit UpDraft

(TLUD) micro-gasification is causing changes.• My role has changed:

– I continue to advocate TLUD efforts and I still assist others,– I end my 13 years of summarizing world-wide TLUD progress at

ETHOS. Many others can present their efforts. • Here I only summarize work with DIRECT involvement by Dr

TLUD. He does not work alone.

• You and others are invited to join any of these efforts.

1. Uganda and Kenya: TChar

• Awamu Biomass Energy and Wisdom Stoves are revisiting and refining the TChar variation of TLUDs,

• Incorporating the Jiko Koa charcoal stove by Burn Manufacturing.

2. Ghana: Ghana Gasifier Stove Network• Coordination by KN Univ of Science & Technology

and Abellon Clean Energy (India)• Production of TLUDs in Ghana

– ND (Natural Draft) TLUDs (Troika design) at KNUST– FA (Fan Assisted) TLUDs by Abellon– Additional TLUDs for evaluation in households

• Local fuels– Pellets by Abellon (major exporter of pellets)– Bamboo with Global Bamboo (Association)– Locally-sourced wood supplies

• Pilot projects in selected communities

THE GHANA GASFICATION STOVE NETWORK This a network spearheaded by Dr TLUD, Mr. Michael Commeh

(Coordinator- Ghana) and Obed Otoo (Secretary) this initiative is to help Ghanaians artisans and domestic users of stoves know all associated factors affecting stoves design, manufacturing and its usage to ensure the use of clean, efficient and effective stoves for cooking to prevent health and environmental related issues.

Currently this network in has gathered data regarding to individuals, institutions and companies in the field of stoves manufacturing and fuel production. GGSN has about twenty (20) members to form a strong and productive network that will be very mobile to carry out works pertinent to stove and its fuel usage.

With the aid of two Dr TLUD stoves pattern which operate on natural draft and fan assisted respectively has been worked on with its source of fuel from Abellonpellets and bamboo.

We are in the process of building 3 TLUD FAN ASSISTED and 2 TLUD NATURAL DRAFT STOVES. The TLUD (FA) stove works very efficiently and effectively. We would organize a workshop to train artisan on the manufacturing patterns and give the stoves to food vendors as a pilot survey with the aid of questionnaires in February.

The manufacturing of the stove will be at SUAME ITTU, a cluster of metal work artisans and the testing of stove performance by food vendors will be conducted at KNUST, to enable easy monitoring and supervision before mass production of the stoves.

3. South Africa: ekasi.energy’s2-in-1 FAABulous Appliance

• FAABulous™ (Fan Assisted Appliance Base)• US$15 TLUD gasifier reactor/fuel chamber• 3 options of electrical power in its base• Associated household amenities

– Fan for Forced Air (FA) TLUD– Charging of mobile phones– LED lighting– 12 v. power hub

• Hour-long cooking with pellet fuel• Special financing arrangements• See presentation by David Lello at this ETHOS meeting.

4. Cameroon, Sierra Leone, and Ethiopia

• Slow starter, but with solid contacts.

5. Guatemala: TLUD Stoves and Biochar

• Multiple interrelated efforts• Biochar from bamboo in C4 kilns• TLUD Stoves for communities in the Lake

Atitlan basin – with AMSCLAE, the national agency for protection and development there.

• Biochar agricultural experimentation with NGOs that produce compost, etc.

• Development of plancha-style cookstoves with TLUD heat for Central America and Mexico.

6. Haiti: Low-density briquette fuel &biochar for soil regeneration

• Low-density briquette fuel by NGO El Fuego del Sol (FdS)

• With appropriate TLUD-ND locally made by D&E Green (modernized metal shop)

• Biochar collection and use for intensive anthropedogenesis on weak Haitian soil

• With humanure compost by SOIL (NGO).• Pilot financial support by Sunset Rotary Club

assisting orphanages with institutional TLUDs.

7. India and USA: TLUD-RH-F2A Stove

• Continuing efforts for development of a TLUD-RH-F2A stove (TLUD for rice husk fuel with forced secondary air).

• JJQuad design by Joseph James, based on Rua.• Fabrication by Servals Automation, India.• Joe James is present at ETHOS 2016 and

available for detailed discussions. (All interested are welcome.)

JJQUAD Stove Improvements to Rua by Joseph James

• 1. Optimized primary and secondary air hole ratio that greatly improved the emissions performance.

• This stove has forced air (fan assisted) secondary air, as does the Ruastove.
