Welcome to the latest edition of the Tenby Schools Penang Newsletter.

On the 14th June, Ms. Shirley and I attended an event at the Penang offices of the Malaysian Ministry of Education

for the ―Standard Kualiti Institusi Pendidikan Swasta‖ (SKIPS) awards. Tenby Schools Penang was represented in

both the International Schools, and in the Private National Schools categories.

The SKIPS awards are based on a Ministry Of Education audit of 17 of each school‘s merits that contribute to the

quality of educational experiences that are provided for the students and members of the school‘s community. These

are related to aspects of the school including the quality of teaching and learning, curriculum management, academic

performance, health and safety, provision of CCA‘s, discipline, to contribution to the ASEAN community.

Results are calculated and converted to a ―scale‖ of 1 to 5 ―stars‖, with 5 stars being the highest.

The results for Tenby Schools Penang were;

Tenby International School (TIPS and TISS): 5 Stars

Sri Tenby Primary School: 4 Stars

Sri Tenby Secondary School: 4 Stars

The International School result maintained the standards that were achieved in the last SKIPS audit of 2012 when 5

Stars was also achieved, and the 4 Stars achieved by Sri Tenby reflected across the standards from 2012 when 3

Stars was awarded.

From The Head of STPS

To our Muslim teachers, staff, parents, students and friends we would like to wish them ―Ramadan Mubarak‖

In the six months since we started the academic year, a major portion of the curriculum has been covered. Thus we are now at the time of the year for examinations which forms an integral part of the education process. It assesses and provides a feedback of the student‘s attainment in the various subjects. This will allow any remedial work with students if needed. Students of Tahun 1 to 5 will be seating for their mid-year examination and Tahun 6 students will be having their UPSR trial examination from 28

th June – 1

st July 2016. Both these examinations are

summative in nature. Examination is part and parcel of a student‘s life and cannot be avoided. The performance in an examination will greatly improve if students approach it with a positive attitude and are well prepared

In view of the impending examination I would like to share some tips on how to study effectively for an examination

Pay attention in class. Do not be distracted by talking with your friends, day dreaming, playing with pencils, pen, rulers or erasers while a lesson is in progress. Be an active learner, listen and give full attention to the teacher. If you fail to understand any part of the lesson, do not hesitate to ask your teacher. They are ever ready to help you. Be conscientious in your work.

Use Graphic organisers. Graphic organisers helps students to understand and remember contents and concepts that are being taught. They help student separate what is important from those that are interesting but not essential. They show relationship between concepts or contents and in this way show how the knowledge is structured. This helps students to develop analytical, creative and thinking skills.

Make time to study. Do not cram. Set time aside every day to study. Make studying a part of your habits. Retention and understanding what is learnt will be better if learning takes place in a orderly and calm condition. Further lasting knowledge and skills can only be acquired over time.

Organise your study space. Learning space must be clean, quiet and with little distractions. Noise and distractions affect concentration. Have all the things you need before the study period to prevent you from getting up to find things that you need. Concentration is the key to learning.

Examination format and the topics to be examined.

Familiarise with the format of the examination paper. Knowing what and how you will be tested will help you prepare for an examination.

Revise and practice

―Practice makes perfect‖ – no truer words were ever spoken. To do well in any examination student need to revise and practice. Revision and practice take time that is why student must study consistently. This will also help in mastery and retention of knowledge and skills.

Have healthy meals and drink lots of water.

Do you know that the brain is the most energy – consuming organ in our body? Keeping your body and brain well fuelled during examination period is essential. So eat nutritious and well-balanced diet. Fish, nuts, fruits and milk have been proven to aid concentration and memory.

Being well hydrated is essential for the brain to function at its best. Drink lots of water throughout your revision and during the examination.

The tips are not exhaustive but I hope will in some way help students to prepare for the examination.

Best of luck in the upcoming examination.

Regards,

Cheah Sin Hock

From The Head of STSS

Dear Parents,

The mid-year examinations have just ended. Assessments took a week for lower secondary classes and a fortnight

for upper secondary classes. The teachers are in the process of reviewing the examination papers and putting

intervention plans in place.

Feedback from teachers regarding the results have so far been encouraging. That is indeed positive and it is hoped

that this has been a result of the effort of teachers and students in the preparations for the examinations way before

the actual assessments took place. The teachers dealt with the challenge of addressing the different learning needs

of students and the time required by different students to internalise knowledge. Hence strategies were already put

in place to help every student to do well, as every one sits for a common examination in their year group.

Reports will be distributed to parents during the Parent-Teacher Meeting on 20 July.

PT3 History Course Work

The PT3 course work for History has begun and the question this year is all about historical buildings. There is no

shortage of such buildings in Penang and it will be interesting project for the students.

The History teacher, together with all the Form 3 students went on a field trip to selected historical buildings. These

included the Fort Cornwallis, St. George Church, House of P. Ramlee, Khoo Kongsi and Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion.

Based on course requirements, students gathered information, took pictures and conducted interviews with the

relevant personnel. We know that students will try their very best to do well in the course work, through lots of hard

work and also guidance from the teacher.

SPM Bahasa Malaysia and English Language Oral Assessments (ULKCP), 2016

The SPM Oral Examinations for Bahasa Malaysia will be held on the 23rd

of June, while the assessments for English

Language are on 20th and 21

st July.

The venue for the examinations is Chung Ling (Private) Secondary School.

Teachers have trained the students and mock assessments have been run to help students obtain optimal results

We wish PT3 and SPM students all the best in their examinations.

PT3 History Field Trip

Beginning June 13, 2016, Form 3 students started on the PT3

History course work. The course work must be completed within the

time period set by the Ministry of Education. This year, students are

required to study historical buildings in the state. Therefore, the

students visited the historical buildings around Georgetown to

gather required information.

The aims of the visit were to :

Ensure that students get authentic information about historical buildings.

Conduct interviews with the people who run all these places.

Meet the requirements set by the ministry, that students visit historical

buildings for the project.

The visit was held on June 17, 2016 from 8 am to 4 pm. The visit was organised

by History teacher, Mr. Hakimi. Two other teachers went along as translators

when dialects were spoken during interviews. Places that we visited were Fort

Cornwallis, St. George Church, House of

P. Ramlee, Khoo Kongsi and Cheong Fatt Tze

Mansion.

Students were very excited when they traced

the history of the buildings and took a step

back in time as they toured the places

selected. They said it was as if they

themselves experienced the daily activities of

the people in history. In addition, they were

amazed by the beautiful architecture of the

historical buildings.

The students managed to get a lot of

information on the background, structures,

activities that went on in history and

measures taken to consrve the places. Those

were all the information they require to

complete their course work.

From the Head of TISS

Dear Parents,

We have welcomed our students back from their Horizons Trips this week and have passed on our thanks and

appreciation to everyone involved in organising, planning and running these wonderful events. We have started to

share the many photos of these trips via our social media ports.

I would like to give you a quick update on our recruitment for September 2016. We have increased the number of

teachers from 34 last year to 36 for the coming new academic year. This has reduced the number of teachers who

have split subjects. It will allow teachers to focus on their specialist subjects and therefore benefit the students. I

have included some information and feedback on our teachers who have joined in the past few months inside the

newsletter. We are very happy with our staff and the feedback from the students has been very positive.

For the last week of term I will share a programme of the week as at the moment it appears to be a very busy time

of celebration, events and assemblies. This will be shared in the next week to help you make arrangements in

enough time.

We are delighted to also announce further support for students who require extra English provision. A programme

of books has been ordered which are available to help students develop their language skills and access the

Cambridge curriculum easier and with more structure. These books are available for free from the school and will

arrive in the next week.

Warm regards,

Mr Paul Walton

Tenby U14 Netball Tournament

Tenby players arrived at Uplands International school at 8:30 Saturday morning for the annual netball tournament.

There were 18 students in total for both teams, A and B, and were supervised by Coach Fumi along with Ms Aini

from the PE department. There were 5 schools which participated including Tenby: Straits, Gardens, Uplands and

Prince of Wales with 10 teams altogether. The players warmed up and were briefed about the listed ground rules

as well as their timetable for their upcoming games.

‗A‘ team consisted 9 players: Christine, Miho, Carmen, Gurudevi, Kayla, Ee Lin, Darshini, Ping Er and Abigail as

the captain. Two pupils were subbed out every match and each student had chances to play a part in the 4 games

to compete for finals. The first match held in the indoor court was at 10:00 against Straits and Tenby managed to

score 9 to 0 and won their first game. There was a 20 minute break before the next match began at 10:40 which

Tenby once again scored 9 to 0 against Gardens B team and the players rushed to the outdoor field for their next

ongoing match. The Uplands C team were an easy play and Tenby won with an impressive result of 17 to 0 with

20 minutes to spare for a brunch break. The last match against POWIIS B team were also held in the field under

the hot afternoon sun which Tenby again scored 9-0 and this led Tenby to enter into the finals.

‗B‘ team was also made up of 9 players and Sarah was elected as the captain to assist the

team, other members include: Joyee, Nilinya, Jo Lyn, Rian, Jean, Yun Whey, Jovie and

Jocelyn. Since B team was rather new, this tournament was introduced as a great experience

even though the results were not exceptional. Most of the games were held outdoors in the

field except for the first match held in the indoor court which Tenby lost 19 points to Uplands A

team but ultimately managed to score 1. However, Tenby won the second match against

Uplands B team with the score of 3 to 0 whereas the next match weren‘t as lucky as POWIIS B

team was able to beat Tenby with the final result of 0 to 12. The last match was against

Gardens A team which they eventually won by 4 points with the ending score as 1 to 5. Even

though Tenby B team were not qualified for finals, it will never less benefit them in future

matches with their new set of skills and tactics.

The finals for ‗A‘ team did not go as planned as Uplands A team were very experienced and highly skilled and the

end result was not outstanding as Tenby lost to 17 points and were only able to score 4 by the end of the 20

minute game. ‗A‘ team landed as 1st runner up of the tournament taking home medals and trophy awarded by

Uplands school whereas Tenby B team came 8th place. At the end, it was great fun and an opportunity to also

showcase Tenby‘s capability and potential hard work in training but the utmost rewarding gain was the praise for

Tenby‘s respectful behaviour and positive attitude in this tournament.

Horizons Week (All photos are uploaded to the Facebook page)

We have a vast amount of photos from the trips that were ran during Horizons week. We will share these via social

media and through the newsletter over the coming

weeks.

Beijing 2016

We had a great trip to Beijing. We

saw some amazing sites which

included Tiananmen Square, the

Forbidden City and the Great Wall

of China. We also went to several temples and

saw were Chinese emperors lived and were buried.

Walking up the Great Wall of China was hard work

as it was really steep it‘s hard to imagine how they

built it over the mountains. It was built to keep

Mongolians out of China as they used to come and

steal from the Chinese. On the final day we went

to a market where you could buy bugs, snakes,

spiders and scorpions to eat. Some of the bugs

were still alive when you order them and then they

get cooked on a flame! Yum!

The students of Tenby Schools Penang that

went to Gopeng, Perak got a chance to

experience the adventures of being in the

outdoors. They also got a chance to learn

about the flora and fauna in the rainforests

of Malaysia. It was an amazing trip.

Everyone enjoyed all the activities that

were held at Gopeng. Many interesting

activities were held for example: Abseiling,

Paintballing, Caving, Jungle trekking and

the most enjoyable activity was White

Water Rafting. It was a really nice trip to

Gopeng and the students hope to revisit

Gopeng in the future.

Singapore

Upon arriving to Singapore, the whole group was introduced to our tour guide, Mr. Zac

and we proceeded to the Singapore Science Centre. Science Centre Singapore and its

group of attractions bring out the wonders of science, technology, engineering and

mathematics through its unique blend of exhibitions, educational programmes and

events. In nearly four decades, over 17 million visitors have entered our doors, arriving

with curiosity and leaving inspired by our creative and innovative content. We spent the

whole day there from 10a.m. to 4p.m. After that we all went to the Nanyang Boarding School to rest.

About an hour later, our tour bus took us to the Singapore Flyer

wheel, which was a Ferris wheel. Photographs were taken of the

beautiful scenery from a high view. After dinner, everyone went

back to the hostel to rest for tomorrow‘s adventure.

The next day, we boarded the bus with two teachers - Mr. Baz and

Ms. Aini to supervise us. We toured around the zoo for around

three hours. All the birds with their multi-coloured feathers gleamed.

After that we went to river safari. We found two unique and rarely

found animals– pandas, it‘s such a worth sightseeing. Then we

enjoyed a boat ride. We also saw many other unique and rarely

After another delicious breakfast the hostel, we got a bus to the Marina Bay. We went to art and science museum.

where 16 spectacular art installations are brought to life and evolve in real-time through visitor presence and

participation. We were amazed as this stunning interactive world responds to human behavior, and changes

according to our creative input!

For its landmark permanent exhibition, Art Science

Museum collaborated with teamLab, an award-winning

Tokyo-based art collective of "ultra-technologists" that

includes artists, programmers, engineers, CG animators,

mathematicians, architects and designers. The result

is Future World – Singapore‘s largest interactive digital

playground. This place is for all age groups. Every

exhibition is worth watching, it is like a digital universe. It

is mesmerizing! Moreover, we visited Garden by the Bay

in the evening. Garden by the Bay had a spectacular

display called Garden Rhapsody, where artificial trees,

called dancing trees, would light up and ―dance‖.

Phuket, Thailand

Students from the Year groups 9 to 12 gathered in Penang Airport‘s McDonald,

chatting gaily as the supervising teachers Mr Alan and Mrs Carolyn arrived. Having

been given a briefing, they separated to seek out lunch. Soon they were queuing up

to check in and even sooner they were aboard the plane, Firefly, for a 45 minute

flight.

Once having reached Phuket, Thailand, a country with a weather that matches

Malaysia‘s own, the students boarded minivans in groups of eight with a buzz of

excitement. Passing traffic, street stalls and rubber plantations, the students, being

students, of course found ways to entertain themselves till they arrived at the planned destination- namely Arinara

Beach Resort.

There, students split into pairs, each pair collecting keys to their rooms as they checked in. And what a sight to

behold! They discovered rooms with two king sized beds, a small but efficient bathroom and other smaller luxuries

such as a tiny fridge, 2 umbrellas, a cupboard, etc. Changing to their swimsuits and donning their slippers, the

soon-to-be surfers ran to Bangtao Beach with hastily smeared sunblock. Feet flying across soft, smooth sand, they

swarmed; Mr Alan introduced them to an Australian surfer, known to them as Mr Rick. But before the anticipated

students could begin riding the waves they had a small briefing on what they would attempt for the day. (They later

learned they would have a similar one for the following four days.) They were split into two separate groups, one

consisting mainly of students who had chosen the same trip the previous year. This group went body-boarding

while the other went surfing.

In the water, students from the beginners

group learned to paddle and catch a few

waves alongside the helpful instructors,

some succeeded at first try while others

failed. Those being the ones who had failed

gotten a mouthful of seawater realized it is

called salt water for a reason. Much spitting

ensued.

Page 20: Tenby Schools Penang 20160627(v4ab).pdfExamination format and the topics to be examined. ... SPM Bahasa Malaysia and English Language Oral ... The SPM Oral Examinations for Bahasa

20

The next day was quite similar, there

were no changes in the surfing

schedule, however, they awoke to find a

buffet of breakfast awaiting them. Fruit,

cereal, vegetables, meat, toast. The list

goes on. So after a most delicious

breakfast they rested before their surfing

lesson at ten (Thai time). This lesson,

those who went surfing first went body

boarding first, the same treatment was

given to the other group. They learned

new things as they were wont to do,

being in a surfing lesson. I assure you,

no one got bored. After surfing, students

had their lunch and some took a

leisurely stroll through the resort,

discovering a Table-tennis room. It was

great entertainment. This Tuesday evening, they once

again went out of the resort. Different groups swapped

knowledge of which restaurants had not only good

food but also cheap prices. But this night the streets

seemed slightly different owing to the fact that it was

raining, feet we soaked but most did not mind seeing

as they were soaked for most of the day anyway.

There was not much change from Tuesday to

Wednesday other than that in weather and choice of

meals, so not much needed be said about it. Thursday,

though, is a different case. The day up from morning to

afternoon was similar still but at around 4:30 students

assembled in the lobby and led by Mr Alan and Ms

Carolyn set off to a night market on foot. Souvenirs as

well as snacks were bought. Thai delicacies were tried

and enjoyed. Many searched for potential gifts and

found them. These included symbolic carvings,

T-shirts, keychains and hair accessories. The day was

not a wasted one.

Friday was somewhat of a rush, students had packed most of their things, getting ready for the flight back home.

But before that, was a squeezed in one last surfing lesson. So that everyone could surf in the considerably

shortened time, some used longer boards, some used short boards some used soft boards so no body-boarding

was done. Students made the most out of it, surfing and paddling. Then came the time to end the lesson. Thanks

were given to the surfing instructors and students ran back to their hotel rooms to shower while waving their

goodbyes to the beach.

Finally everyone got down just in time, checking out and returning their keys. A pair whom I will not name, spare

them the embarrassment had a last minute panic as their keys were lost. These were found eventually and luckily

Mr Alan had predicted something would go wrong

and had actually planned to leave 15 minutes earlier.

They were just on time.

After reaching the Airport they checked in and

bought themselves some lunch at subway. Finally, it

was time to leave, even the sky was crying heavy

drops. So this marked the end of their Horizon trip in

Phuket, Thailand.

New Teachers at Tenby

We have been delighted with the impact of our new teachers at Tenby.

Mr. Fahmi has shown a great passion for

teaching Maths here at Tenby and we

have been delighted with the start he has

made at school. He has excellent subject

knowledge, a deep understanding of

areas such as Discrete Mathematics,

Calculus and Differential Equation. He

specialised on these areas during his time

training in the US. He graduated in the

US and spent time tutoring and giving

tuition. He is a keen footballer and has

been involved in helping out with students

in CCAs at school. He has used a range

of strategies in the classroom and often

uses technology to engage and enthuse the students.

Ms. Mazel has joined the school this term and has been working in

the Humanities Faculty. She is completing her CICTL (Cambridge

International Certificate in Teaching and Learning) this term. She

has received outstanding feedback on her teaching from the

visiting members of the Tenby board and the students have

thoroughly enjoyed her lessons. Ms Mazel, was educated in

England and lived there for 26 years, completing her Degree in the

British educational system. Her qualifications and level of English

have enabled her to differentiate lessons, use effective questioning

and therefore helps students thrive in her class already during her

time already here at school. She has lived and worked in 6 different

countries and has visited over 19 countries, she is very

experienced in understanding various cultures which has helped

contribute to the internationalism and learning of students at

school.

With over 7 years of tutoring, tuition and teaching, Mr. Dennis joined our

English Faculty. He is very experienced in the field of English language

and communication and has tutored over 200 students. Has awards for

public speaking and speeches he has made. He believes that a good

education system should incorporate a two-way interactive learning

between teachers and students, where through good communication not

only teachers, but students alike are able to think, generate ideas, and

express articulately to promote essential learning. Mr. Dennis also has a

background in Psychology which helps him develop a teaching style to

assess students‘ strengths and weakness, motivate and stimulate

quicker learning progress in class. Outside of class, Mr. Dennis is a keen

badminton player.

From The Head of TIPS

Dear Parents,

We are all very excited this week as we get ready to perform our annual production :

GO FOR GOLD on Thursday 30th & Friday 1st July at 6pm in the atrium. The

whole school has been practicing the songs and they sound fantastic. The 45 strong

cast has been putting the finishing touches to their play and can‘t wait to entertain you

this week. Tickets are selling fast and are still on sale for RM 5 from Ms Sharon in the

TIPS office.

We are all very proud of our Eco—Council who were fortunate enough to go to the

Spice Gardens for a talk from the Green Man—an environmentalist and author from

Germany. They were the youngest children at the event but were the most involved

and they asked very sensible questions. They are now going to use this event to

develop their programme for the coming school year.

Regards

Ms Marian
