Message from TSPA TSPA like to announce TISS Students’ Wish List Book Project has been completed. Most of the story books in the students’ wish list have been purchased, except for those titles which were either not available or out of our budget. The books will be made available in the library this week for students to borrow, so do tell your children to look out for them at a designated shelf in the library. We hope that this project will encourage children to read more regularly by providing books as requested by the children themselves.

Do drop us an email [email protected] if you have any comments or feedback.

Tenby’s got Talent – Initial Promo

Tenby’s got Talent 2017 is coming very soon! The sound system has been checked, the lights have been tested, and the date has been set for Thursday 6th April. So all that is now needed is for our amazingly talented students of Tenby to sign up for their performance. You can act, sing, dance, juggle, tight rope walk (or even try to do all these things at the same time!), but you need to register your act on the sign-up sheet or with Mr. Nick as soon as possible. Sign-up sheets are available outside the music room, International Primary building, and the National Primary Office.

Sign up, good luck and start practicing!

Chinese New Year also known as the "Spring Festival" is an important Chinese festival celebrated at the turn of the traditional lunar Chinese calendar.

On Thursday 26th Jan 2017, the Tenby Schools Penang community celebrated the Year of the Fire Rooster. Students and teachers were encouraged to wear traditional attire or be dressed in red as the colour red symbolises prosperity, good luck and great energy. The festive atmosphere was vibrant and energised as the multicultural community of Tenby Schools, Penang celebrated the Chinese New Year, dressed in the different ethnic attire.

The celebration kicked off after a short but positive speech by Mr Cheah Sin Hock, the head of Sri Tenby Schools. Accompanied by the music of beating drums, clashing cymbals, and resounding gongs, two lions pranced and danced their way through the administration block visiting the rooms of the heads of schools to bring good luck. The lions enthralled the students with their heart stopping acrobatic moves on the poles. Mascots representing The God of Luck and the two roosters entertained the audience with their good humour. The climax of the Lion performance was the “Cai Qing” and the spitting out of the vegetable leaves signifying that there will be an abundance of everything good in the coming year for the school. Students were also thrilled by the performers from Tenby International Secondary and Primary and Sri Tenby Secondary and Primary who put up many fabulous items to entertain them.

The second part of the celebration were cultural activities in the school

sports hall organised for the occasion by staff and students. These included Chinese calligraphy, artistic Chinese drawing, lucky draw, memory cards, paper cuttings, picking up green peas, writing wishes and paper ball throwing game. Staff and students had a great and enjoyable time together.

Thanks to our photographer – Andy Tan (Ex- student of STSS)

The last part of the celebration was a scrumptious lunch. Thanks to the generosity and support of the parents we had an incredible spread of food. Indeed there was an abundance of food, fellowship and good will.

Thanks to teachers and students who have contributed in one way or another towards the success of this celebration. A word of special thanks must be acknowledged to TSPA for their generosity and strong support towards this resounding success of this event.

Sri Tenby Primary School (STPS) Science Lesson

The importance that Science and technology is reflected in many aspects of our daily lives, at work, at school and at home. Further our dependence on science and technology requires that all pupils develop a high level of scientific literacy. The KSSR Science curriculum aims to develop conceptual and procedural understanding in pupils in the primary school. Most importantly, it is to cultivate a positive attitude to science and provides pupils with opportunities to experience the excitement of studying science. The curriculum emphasises the importance of learning through activity and discovery. The curriculum now aims to develop scientific skills as well as understanding of concepts. Practical investigation is central to scientific activity. Photographs show Tahun 1 students observing with their senses and with and without the aid of an instrument.

Sri Tenby Secondary School (STSS) The Chinese New Year Celebration in Tenby Schools, Penang was nothing short of spectacular, with the lions roaring and dancing their way to usher in luck and success. The performances, activities and Tenby Open House ensured that everyone in Tenby Penang had their fill of fun and food. Most important of all, Chinese New Year was celebrated by all races, a celebration of unity in diversity!

“Let’s Shoot” (Throwing Rolled Paper in place of oranges)

Many Malaysians connect ‘Chap Goh Mei’ with the traditional myth of young unmarried ladies throwing mandarin oranges into sea and rivers, in the believe that the further the orange is thrown, the better the suitor who would be calling. In this modern era, however, single ladies will still throw oranges, but the oranges are inscribed with names and telephone numbers to make it easier for suitors to make contact!

Chap Goh Mei is not an official public holiday in Malaysia. Instead it is simply a very popular festive date marked by many of Chinese descent. It is known by many as the Chinese version of Valentines’ Day.‘Chap Goh Mei’ itself means the 15th night of Chinese New Year in Hokkien, which also marks the end of the Chinese New Year celebration. If you visit the Esplanade at Penang there are competitions where boys in boats are required to scoop up oranges thrown into the sea by girls, and the boat with the most oranges wins the competition. Activities like these are carried out to keep the traditions alive and for some fun.

Cut your way to good luck and success! (Cutting red paper patterns)

Paper cuttings with very intricate designs are popular decorative items for the house during Chinese New Year

The paper cuts are glued to the exterior of windows, so the light from the inside would shine through the cut space of the paper cuts. Usually, the artwork is done on red paper, as red is associated with good luck and happiness in Chinese culture, but other colours can also be used. Normally Paper-cutting artwork is a common feature during Spring Festival, weddings and celebration of the birth of a new baby. Paper cuts always symbolize luck and happiness.

Sri Tenby Secondary School Athletics Club members training at the SMK Pendidikan Khas. Students are engaged learning the techniques of throwing the javelin and were also training for the 100metre sprint. We would like to thank the Principal of the school, En. Eshamuddin Bin Abdul Rahman who kindly allowed the Tenby School Athletics Club the use of their school field. The Tenby Athletics Club carry out co-curricular activities, training students for track and field events on Monday from 3.10pm to 4.10pm. The club has 31 members and with better facilities for training, we look forward to greater success in athletics!

The Futsal Club The members hone their skills and have fun during futsal hour on every Thursday. The club intends to hold more friendly matches with schools in the vicinity. The members are training for a return friendly match with SMK Pendidikan Khas.

9th March Year 12/13 Parents Evening

Happy New Year to all our Tenby students, families and staff! Fantastic to see such a blaze of red last week during our Chinese celebrations, thank you to everyone for taking part. A fantastic event laid on by Mr Cheah and the Chinese teaching staff, Miss Yeoh and Mr Choo. Our year 11 students completed their mock exams and will now be focusing on “closing the gaps” on their knowledge to ensure they are prepared for their IGCSEs in May. Following Parents Evening last night, we host the Tenby Sixth Form Information evening on Monday and this will provide opportunities for students and parents to speak to subject teachers and find out the best combination of A Level programmes for you: 16:30—18:30 hrs in the sports hall. As we know Malaysia is a hot climate all year round, in PE we do teach PE lessons outside. The PE team are actively encouraging all students to bring a bottle to their lessons to ensure they keep hydrated but also to avoid unnecessary queues at the water fountain which disturbs the teaching and learning taking place—please support us and ensure your child has a bottle for their PE lessons. I hope you enjoy reading the following successes from across TISS, a lot has gone on in such a short space of time! Kind regards, Miss Liz

MISS CAROLYN

Chinese New Year provided another opportunity for all KS3 to celebrate. Thursday 26th was a day of lions, roosters and the colour red. The students enjoyed the stunning performance of the Lion Dance and the larger than life sized roosters proved to be a hit. The students were also given the opportunity to participate in Chinese activities that included Chinese calligraphy and paper cutting. A ‘Potluck’ lunch was enjoyed by everyone.

Having fun is a crucial part of education and is definitely part of the Tenby experience in developing the whole child. We are now well into Term 2 and I am receiving a lot of positive feedback from the teachers regarding students’ commitment to their learning.

Tristan joined Tenby in Year 7 and he always fully involves himself in school life. He is interested in science and he is a keen animal lover. He is involved in producing the online Year Book and he loves playing Dodgeball in cca time. He is also a great actor and is talented at producing realistic sound effects.

The Chinese New Year has begun, bringing with it prosperity for us all at the start of the year of the Rooster! But as we know, much of this prosperity can not happen if we ourselves don’t put in the hard work, dedication, and commitment needed to make our dreams happen! Year 10’s are working really hard in their second term of IGCSE studies, and the pressure continues for our Year 11’s who have just completed their mock exams and are now working to complete their all important coursework. Keep up the hard work, you know it will be worth it when exam time comes!
