Update on School Production & Items Needed

Weekly Canteen Menu

From the Campus Principal Jane Kuok

Dear Parents and Tenby Community,

We ended last week with the Rotary Club of Greentown and Tenby Interact Club’s joint Charity Dinner at the Excelsior Hotel. It was a great event and we would like to thank everyone in the community for their support. Special thanks goes The Rotary Club of Greentown, Ms. Bernie, Pn. Siti Mariam and the Inter-actors for their time put into organising the event. We are so proud of the leadership and organisational skills the students demonstrated. Their resolve, perseverance, preparation for their scripts, dances, event flow etc. was impressive. The community’s combined effort has raised in excess of RM20,000.00 so far. The exact amount is being verified between the Rotary Club of Greentown and the School and we will publish this once it has been confirmed.

Highlight of the WeekFollowing the mention in last week’s Newsletter, we are delighted to report that Thang Kitt Fay in Year 10 (who qualified last week to represent Perak at the MSSM Cross Country Competition) came first in the MSSD Track and Field U18 1500m race and third in the 3000m race. Well done indeed!

Influenza BNotification regarding Influenza A & B went out to respective sections of the School at the start of this week. Luckily, these strains of flu are less virulent than before. Nevertheless, we have been informed that there is a concentration of Influenza B cases in Ipoh at the moment so we write to highlight this to the community. Please remember to take note of the School’s procedure for Preventing the Spread of Viruses as taken from the Parents’ Students’ Handbook 2017:

Preventing the Spread of VirusesThe School will inform all parents in the year group once a case of an infectious illness has been confirmed.

We are instrumental in keeping our community healthy. We ensure that students wash their hands regularly during the day and that the classroom and equipment in daily use is cleaned regularly as a precaution. Hand sanitizers in primary classrooms are provided by the School. Additional precautions for Early Years are that children will need to wash their hands the moment they arrive at school and classrooms will be aired for at least 10 minutes each day. The precau-tions are in line with the World Health Organisation’s guidelines.

Parents (of young children in particular) can help prevent the spread of viruses into school by following the advice below:• Please have hand sanitizer available for children in the car so that they can disinfect their hands regularly;• Bathe children as soon as they reach home;• Wash school uniform daily (not re-wear items of uniform for school); and• Disinfect toys with one (1) cap of bleach in 500ml of water for 15 minutes.

now and really appreciate any help offered. Whether it’s staff, parents, uncles,

brothers or friends etc – those extra pair of hands can always be utilised. Anybody

who wants to help is more than welcome to get involved. It’s hard work but fun too. If

anybody would like to offer their time/get more involved, please just give me a call

and we’ll get you busy!’

Or does anybody have a tub they can donate to us???

If you absolutely KNOW that you are going to visit KL and could stop by the costume shop and pick up a tub of silver facepaint – please call Ms Stephanie as a matter of urgency, so she can pass on the shop details to you.

Your help is very much appreciated.

Yasmine and Jamie were cutting the paper carefully

following the lines.

Last Tuesday and Thursday (7th and 9th March), students of Standard 1T and 1E

learnt to weave with paper. The students were required to use a technique called ‘anyaman

ikan bilis’ after the steps were demonstrated by the teacher.

Dalili, Rayyan, and Aryan from Standard 1E had great fun while making anyaman ikan bilis!

Students presented their anyaman

ikan bilis by the end of the lesson.

Good job!

Illustrated Newspaper Pages, Art Form 1T This art project was inspired by the very awesome art of Kristy Patterson. She has a blog at Flying Shoes Art Studio with tons of her artwork on it. Much of her art is created around beautiful illustrations on old discarded dictionary pages. There is a layer of depth and authenticity that is brought in by the aged and textured dictionary page background. The cool part is that it's a short project with nice creative results. It's a pleasant break from the more labour intensive stuff we've done. The concept behind this is to take a newspaper page and illustrate one of the words from that page onto the page itself. For the most part this project was done with ink pen and soft pastels. Although, we used coloured pencils for small details as well. Each student completed 3 different pages and illustrations.

Form 3 students from Sekolah Tenby were

learning how to make creative posters out of the ancient Chinese proverbs in the school

library.

In groups of 2 or 3, students were required to write down the author, the source, meaning and the story depiction behind their proverbs.

Students were making good use of the PT3 Chinese reference books in the library to do their group poster assignment.

Eugene and Gheng Lok took the initiative to find extra resources and ideas by using the library’s computer.

知足常乐 zhī zú cháng lè

Meaning: A happy person is satisfied with what one has -- Mencius (372 BC)

One of the groups has chosen a proverb from a poem of Li Bai (Tang Dynasty 701AD). “I stay in this emerald mountain and you ask, ‘what are the

reasons behind?’

I smile but answer not for I’ve a carefree mind.”

Raising Academic Achievement Through

Teacher Training to Improve Students’ 21st Century Learning Skills

in Sekolah Tenby Ipoh

Apart from a teacher’s commitment, a teacher’s professional development is vital and a driving force behind students’ success. At Sekolah Tenby we have regular training set aside each week for teachers. These involve training with internal and external facilitators. In order to help raise the academic achievement in Sekolah

Tenby, the teachers participated in a professional development course conducted by four School Improvement Specialist Coaches from Perak State Education

Department. This training focussed on lesson planning as well as national and school-based assessment. This is in line with the new curriculum, KSSR and KSSM, which emphasizes on creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Teachers are encouraged to employ new pedagogical approaches and techniques such as the use of ICT in lessons to cater to the students’ needs in this 21st century teaching and

learning era.

Book Week (27th February to 3rd March) – more news from last week

As part of the celebration, parents were invited to conduct a storytelling session with the children using their own mother tongue which was quite amusing to some of the children. Parents came in with creative props which kept the children entertained. Each class was busy with their own activities such as storytelling, silent reading, guided reading, story writing, making a story diorama, book marks and story character mask. A role play was put up by the Nursery students on the story of “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”. A few of the Year 1 students were chosen to tell stories to the Nursery and Reception classes. They turned up to be good storytellers. We wrapped up the event by having a character dress up day for the whole school. It was a beautiful sight seeing our administrative staffs, teachers and students came dressed up as their favourite book character. The winners for the best dressed character were awarded according to their creativity and originality.

Fun Day Rehearsal

News From Year 6

We celebrated Book Week through a variety of activities during the week.

Our mornings started with ‘Drop Everything And Read’, which gave us the

opportunity read

and to share our

books with our

classmates.

The children talked about the genre of their books, and

what their preferred genres were and why.

The Year 6 children spent part of the week making Story Boxes and Word Birds. These story boxes are a great

resource to support exploration of stories, and can be used to enhance writing skills and enrich vocabulary. Our

story boxes offered the opportunity for some rich literacy activities, including exploring setting and analysing how

we can create different moods through different literary techniques. We will use these story boxes in class until the

end of term as a stimulus for class narrative writing.

Our Word Birds served us well in grammar, where we practiced writing compound and complex sentences using

metaphors. As we go through the year, we will add on phrases and sentences which we think are good examples of

writing.

Year 6 finished off their week by writing a review of their favourite books. Each review is personal and gave the

opportunity for the children to express an opinion through writing. Children were also able to develop their own

writing style and to find their ‘voice’. These reviews will be available for

others to read in the classroom.

It was a great Book Week, with lots of activities on offer. The most enjoyable part of it? Our character dress up on

Friday, everyone looked fantastic!

A Quick Peek into Year 4T

We have been doing quite a number of interesting things in class. This term, we are looking at the

IPC Unit – Saving the World (The Rainforest). This is a unit where we looked at the various

tropical rainforests around the world, the indigenous people who live there, the animals, plants and

the ecosystem. We will also be looking at how people have been affecting the rainforests by

uncontrolled deforestation and international organisations who are helping to preserve the

rainforests. Malaysia is also home for the tropical rainforests. We have the rainforest reserve park

just a stone’s throw away from our school.

We began our IPC unit by inviting our parents to our classrooms to help us turn our class into a

rainforest. We had so much fun. Some of our parents taught us how to make a parrot using

several pieces of coloured

papers. You can see

these finished parrots

hanging in our classroom.

Some parents worked

along with us to make the

vines of the tropical

rainforest using brown

paper and some parents

helped us to make leaves. And we made many leaves and vines to be put up in the classroom.

We also had our parents helping us to make a tree using coloured paper. Besides using art and

craft to turn our class into a rainforest, we brought

rainforest animal toys (stuffed,

plastic and rubber), mini trees

and tractors to be displayed in

the class. We somehow brought

quite a lot of snakes and

monkeys. The monkeys can be

seen hanging as part as our class

display. We have them in a

variety of colours. We were grateful that our parents have come to help us

out. This way, we could speak more with our parents on this interesting unit.

In conjunction with Maths and Science Week (from March 20th -24th, 2017), we would like to invite parents to our Primary Science Fair. Details are as follows:

Day and date: Friday, 24th March 2017

Time: 10:00hrs to 12:00hrs

Venue: The Auditorium

Look out for more details in the upcoming Newsletter!

In our efforts to encourage children to care for their environment, we would like to ask that parents help their children to label their belongings.

Often we find that items in the Lost and Found had to be thrown away as we could not trace the owners.

It is very important for children to understand that they must be responsible for their own belongings. This would prevent reusable items from having to be repurchased, showing a greater care and respect for our local community and environment.

Primary Parent Information Morning

Biannual Sixth Form Leadership Camp Date: 3rd – 5th March 2017

Venue: Barre Centre, Tanah Rata, Cameron Highlands

On the 3rd of March 2017, twenty-eight students of the Sixth Form, departed from Tenby Schools Ipoh and made their way to the Cameron Highlands by bus for a leadership training camp. The camp lasted three days and two nights and was filled with various activities based on the theme “A United World at Peace- through education.” Day 1: The Stopover at Kampung Pergom (Orang Asli Village) We trekked up a rather steep hill for thirty minutes before we reached the kampong which sits atop this hill. There were several attap houses as well as some concrete homes. We met the Orang Asli children in a small community centre on the fringe of the village. It was unbelievably pleasing to witness the sheer joy of the children when we distributed our gifts and donations to them. Sadly, time was limited. Nevertheless, we managed to read some pages to them and took some pictures with them. We strongly felt the need to do more for them.

Day 1: Checking in at Barre Hostel This hostel’s décor is basic. This is not the place for those who want luxury. It gives you an experience of simple and modest accommodation. We had to unpack and wash up before dinner. We had eighteen girls in two dorms and ten boys in one. In the cold weather, we enjoyed the hot water bath but again we had to rush as there was a queue for the bathing rooms. This we suppose is part of the communal experience that is integral to leadership training!

Day 1: The First Session We were given a briefing by Mr. Louis who outlined the objectives of the camp. “This is a good place for a reflection on “What Unites & What Divides”. The separation of Malaysia and Singapore

was negotiated in secret here,” explained Mr. Louis.“ Bapa Malaysia (Father of Malaysia) Tunku Abdul Rahman

and Singapore’s leader Mr Lee Kuan Yew spent two weeks here in 1960 trying to find the best pathway ahead.”

That night, together with our teachers (Mr. Louis, Mr. Vinodh, Mr. Paul Wilson), we had a night outing to Tanah Rata, one of Malaysia’s coolest hill stations.

Day 2: Workshop 1: “What Unites? What Divides” In our groups of three, we explored the topic above. We also had to name one person from the world stage or in our family circle who could be described as an “apostle of peace”. We had to do a presentation before the whole

group on our discussions. Among the figures named by the groups were Mother Teresa, Mahatma Gandhi, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra, Abraham Lincoln and Nelson Mandela. Among the factors that divide mankind, the participants identified the following:

Selfishness (class, race, sectarianism) Ignorance (prejudice, wrong ideas about “other people”) Injustice (e.g. unfair treatment of minorities) Extremism & Use of Violence in Politics Greed (especially in political leaders) Inequalities in wealth Improper use of the media (e.g. hate speech) Ethnic/Religious profiling

Among the key factors that unite people, the participants highlighted the following:

Education based on truth Visionary leadership Sports, Music & the Arts Disasters (e.g. the Great Tsunami – Indian Ocean) Responsible use of the Social Media Respect for others/Respect for Diversity Communication/Connecting with Others Recognition of Human Rights Learning more languages

Day 2: Session 2: The Universal Declaration on Human Rights Mr. Paul Wilson piloted this session. The participants were given the entire document to be perused. Again, in our groups of three, we had to choose one of the articles and discuss the rationale for this right. We had to discuss whether the right was an absolute one or whether there should be limitations on it. We were also expected to outline examples of violations of such rights. Day 2: Visit to the Sungei Pallas (Boh) Tea Estate We really enjoyed this superb experience in the Boh Tea Valley. Surely, it is one of the most scenic valleys in Malaysia. The greenness and the manicured slopes are immaculate. Add to it the incredible freshness of the cool mountain air. We had great fun exploring the pathways of the valley and beholding the colourful flowers there. We felt as if we were in a different world.

Day 2: The Steamboat Dinner in Tanah Rata The dinner was a wonderful social occasion. Tanah Rata and Brinchang are noted for their steamboat fare. We were seated around four circular tables. Also with us at the dinner were Mrs Paul Wilson, Mrs Alegen and her daughter Jessica. After the dinner, we had originally planned to visit the famous Pasar Malam (“Night Market”)

in Brinchang. Much to our dismay, we learned that the market had been relocated to Jalan Sungei Rhui. As the road was closed to buses and the walking distance too far from the planned drop-off point, we had to call off the outing. The bus took us instead to Brinchang town, which is the township located at the highest altitude in the Camerons. Day 3: The Jungle Trekking Session This was perhaps the most thrilling and memorable experience for most of us as it was our first foray into the real Malaysian forest. We were guided on our trek by Mr. Alex Chuah, our teacher and mountaineer who has climbed to Base Camp Everest and Mt Kinabalu. Also with us were Mr. Vinodh, Mr. Paul Wilson and Mrs. Paul Wilson. Our trek took us to the summit of Gunung Jasa (3000ft above sea level). The jungle trekking experience was a wonderful teambuilding tonic as we had to help one another to get across many physical obstacles. At the summit, there is tall radio tower. From the summit, we get a panoramic view of Tanah Rata in all its quaint beauty. For many of us, it was our first glimpse of the flora and fauna of the Malaysian forest. Among our most significant encounters were bright blue flies and super poisonous mushrooms!

Appreciation We would like to thank Mr. Louis, Mr. Alex Chuah, Mr. Paul Wilson, Mrs. Paul Wilson, Mr. Vinodh Kuttappana, Mrs. Alegen and Miss Jesssica for joining us on this trip. We would also like to thank Miss Jane Kuok (Campus Principal) and Mr. Richard Davidson (Head of School) for their wholehearted support for this trip. We would also like to acknowledge the logistical support for the trip given by Mr. Doug Foo (Head of Student Affairs) and Puan Norliza (Adminstrative Officer).
