Dear Parents This week we held a Higher Education Fair on Wednesday, where 20 overseas and local universities and colleges attended the Fair. Parents and students were given an opportunity to find out more about further education pathways and subjects required for their career interests. Due to the demand from parents and students, we will look into holding another education fair in March next year.
More about this fair in the secondary section of this newsletter.
Parents ForumsParents Forums started this week, thank you to the parents who attended and gave us feedback. For those who are unable to come and have queries, please send your questions to [email protected] filling in the relevant forum as the subject of the e-mail and we will address them during the forum. Please note that individual concerns regarding students or individual staff members should be directed to the school via the usual communication channels. At the end of each Forum, we will summarise the key points raised and share these with all parents of the same year group. This will be done via the Parent Portal.

School Survey for ParentsIn last week’s Newsletter, we mentioned that this year’s community surveys would be sent round to garner feedback from stakeholders. We are pleased to inform parents that this year, the survey is available in three languages, English, Malay and Chinese. We hope that this will mean that we will receive a better response to previous years. The survey for parents was sent via the ENGAGE Parent Portal today. We hope that you will be able to find a few minutes to fill in the survey as any feedback is vital when planning ahead for school improvement.
Next week we look forward to Arts Week in TISSI. Read on for more information for the activities that are going on.

School Uniform.
We have arranged for AUG Study to be present during the Monday, 13th November session in order to offer guidance to students and parents on university pathways in Malaysia and beyond. Please use the ENGAGE Parent Portal to book your place by Friday 10th November. Parents may do this by accessing the activities tab on the main ribbon in ENGAGE. For security reasons attendees are reminded to wear their Parents ID tag, “sign in” at
the School’s Reception and “sign out” when they leave the school. You will be issued
with a PTS Meeting sticker to wear once you have signed in. Prefects will be on hand
to escort you to the meeting locations and refreshments will be provided.
We look forward to seeing you at the PTS meeting.
HIGHER EDUCATION FAIR OCTOBER 2017
More than twenty institutions of higher learning from
Malaysia and beyond were represented at the Higher
Education Fair held at Tenby Schools Ipoh on Wednesday
25th October.
The event drew an interesting rainbow of universities from
the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore
and Malaysia.
“We are here for the
first time,” remarked
UTAR
representative Ms Ng Jean Li. “Tenby students are showing
growing interest in UTAR’s rising fame as one of Malaysia’s
most popular local universities.”
Also here for the first time were Quest International University
Perak, Manipal International University, Universiti Teknologi
Petronas, Brickfields Asia College and UNI KL – College of
Medicine.
“We are greatly impressed by the campus and facilities at
Tenby Schools Ipoh,” commented Mr Pretam Singh, student
recruitment executive from Quest International University.
“We have heard about Tenby’s strong tradition of music and drama and we look forward to fruitful
partnerships with Tenby Ipoh.”
For most Tenby secondary and Sixth Form students,
the Fair was another occasion to ponder about what
lies ahead after the A-levels and IGCSE/SPM
examinations.
“The range of options open to us is sometimes
baffling. But events like this are a wonderful stimulus
that enables us to narrow down our choices to what
we really care about,” remarked Emi Yamamoto, a
Sixth Former who hopes to study plant genetics.
The Fair was more than just a marketing event for the
universities. It was also an opportunity for students to
learn more about university entrance requirements
and the changing job market.
“I viewed a video at a university booth which argued that
robots will not be able to take over many jobs,” shared Ong
Yuan Yuan (Sixth Former, Y12J). “Only the repetitive,
meaningless jobs will go. There will always be a demand
for creative, imaginative jobs.”
The number of parents who visited the Fair was small but
significantly growing. One parent who came along
immediately registered her daughter into Tenby Sixth Form
as she was impressed with the personalized academic care
and holistic opportunities Tenby Sixth Form had to offer as
well as the guidance for UCAS when applying for
universities.”
The list of universities/organisations which participated in the Fair was as follows:
AUG (UK, Australia,NZ, Singapore,Canada, USA)
IDP (UK,Australia,NZ, Singapre,Canada,USA)
Navitas UK
University of Adelaide
Brickfields Asia College ( University of London)
Le Cordon Bleu
Curtin University (Singapore)
James Cook University (Singapore)
Herriot-Watt University (Malaysia)
INTI International University
Kaplan International (Singapore)
Liverpool John Moore University
Manipal International University
Nottingham University (Malaysia)
University of Surrey
Northumbria University
Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR)
Universiti Teknologi Petronas
Quest International University Perak
UNI KL (College of Medicine)
The next Higher Education Fair is scheduled for Saturday 10th March.
INTERNATIONAL-MINDEDNESS IN ACTION - THE DEEPAVALI ASSEMBLY
The Deepavali spirit: the triumph of good over evil, knowledge over ignorance and hope over
despair. With crashing waves of colour and joyful spirits festooning the halls, Tenby students
displayed the high regard in which they held this esteemed festival. Continuous
encouragement from our Campus Principal Ms. Kuok has borne even more fruit year upon
year as the mounting tide of beautifully adorned saris, sherwanis and kurtas filled the
school’s passages.
The lighting of the lamps, steeped in historical significance, declared the opening of this
year’s Deepavali assembly. With performances ranging from the enthusiastic efforts of our
primary members to the experienced twirling and swirling of the KS 4 ‘veterans’ and even
invited professionals such as the renowned group “Black Bhag Bhangra”, this special
assembly showcased the successful cultivation of international mindedness in Tenby’s
students that is at the core of Tenby’s Vision; “A United World at Peace - Through
Education”. As people of differing race, gender, and belief came together to celebrate this
momentous occasion, the significance and reverence in which people hold Deepavali cannot
be doubted.

to generate other words. It was an exciting and challenging competition to the students,
requiring them to apply both language skills and thinking skills in order to score points
for their groups.

Dear Parents and Guardians,
We hope you had a restful half-term break. We
trust that you had a fruitful session with your child’s
class teacher this week during the Parent Teacher
Conferences. Home and school partnership is such an
important element of the child’s growth and learning
journey. Children learn best when parents and teachers
work together to encourage and support them. Schools
alone cannot address all of a child’s developmental
needs. The positive involvement of parents is
essential and for this we thank you for your continued
support.
We have begun preparations for the upcoming
Christmas Assembly and will continue to share updates
with you. The Christmas Assembly will be held on
Thursday 30th November.
Thank you.

Our October PIM session, led by Mr. Hamilton, focussed on the International Primary Curriculum (IPC). The IPC is a thematic, creative curriculum with a clear process of learning and with specific learning goals for international mindedness and for personal learning based on the IPC personal goals of cooperation, communication, thoughtfulness, respect, resilience, enquiry, adaptability and morality. The IPC has been designed to ensure rigorous learning but also to help teachers make all learning exciting, active and meaningful for children. Learning with the IPC takes a global approach; helping children to connect their learning to where they are living now as well as looking at the learning from the perspective of other people in other countries. This session had a focus on how the IPC cultivates international mindedness in our students and the need for students to be aware of global issues in Malaysia and other countries. We also considered how we are making greater daily connections with other countries and how there are increasingly diverse cultures around the world. This makes it important for children to expand their international perspective to help them become global citizens.
Year 5 children have been learning about different types of materials in their Science lessons.
They used their knowledge of material and their properties to conduct investigations. The children
had to plan and conduct an investigation to find the best materials for a pet harness. Let’s find out
more about their investigation!
In groups, the children
discussed and made a
plan for their investigation.
The children used a force meter to measure the mass of each material.
Then they recorded
their findings in a
simple table. Finally
they made their
conclusions based
on the findings.

Toddlers in action…
Collage is part of an activity the children carry out in a Toddler class. Here the children from Toddler B
enjoyed pasting coloured papers on a printout of a snail.
This week children from Toddler Y learnt to identify members of their family in “This is my family”. They
are also learnt the names of their friends in class.
“That’s my mummy”. “That’s me Zion”.
