Martin spent the previous three years as the head coach at Missouri State. Tennessee is coming off a 1-2 showing in the Maui Invitational, with losses to No. 6 Duke and No. 8 Memphis (double overtime) and a victory over host school Chaminade. The team arrived back in Knoxville around 10 p.m. ET Friday after close to 20 hours of travel (three flights; Maui to Los Angeles, to Memphis, to Knoxville), practiced twice Saturday and departed for Michigan at 3 p.m. Sunday. Located in Rochester, Mich., Oakland University is about a 30-minute drive north of Detroit. After setting a Summit League record with 2,992 points and finishing No. 2 in the country in scoring last season (85.5 ppg), Oakland is averaging 73.0 ppg this season. The Vols allow 72.2 ppg. • ESPN’s Jay Bilas selected Oakland’s Travis Bader as one of the top three 3-point shooters in col- lege basketball in a preseason ESPN.com feature. And Oakland senior Reggie Hamilton was rated as the nation’s No. 4 point guard by Lindy’s Sports and was No. 96 on CBSSports.com’s list of top 100 players in college basketball. Only once in the last seven years has Tennessee shot better than 70 percent at the free-throw line (.701 in 2005-06). The Vols are shooting .752 at the charity stripe so far this season. Tennessee players are responsible for the top two individual scoring performances by SEC players so far this season. Noting OaklandWith an enrollment of 19,379, Oakland University is located in Rochester, Mich., which is about a 30-minute drive north of Detroit ... The Grizzlies have competed at the NCAA Division I level since 1998-99 ... The Grizzlies are coming off back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances; they were eliminated by Pitt and Texas in the last two years, respectively ... Oakland went 25-10 (17-1 Summit) last season and was powered by eventual sec-ond-round NBA Draft pick Keith Benson (Atlanta Hawks) ... The Grizzlies not only won the Summit League regular-season title, but also the confer-ence tournament ... This year, Oakland is projected to finish second in the Summit League, and its

backcourt is considered the best in the confer-ence ... Senior point guard Reggie Hamilton is a preseason All-Summit League performer, and many consider freshman forward Dante Williams the Summit League Newcomer of the Year favorite ... Oakland has played at Alabama (L, 74-57) and Arkansas (L, 91-68) this season, and the Grizzlies will host Michigan and travel to Arizona later this year.

The Oakland SeriesLast season’s meeting in Knoxville was the first meeting in the series, and the Grizzlies defeated the previously unbeaten and seventh-ranked Vols 89-82 on Dec. 14, 2010 ... The Vols are 0-1 all-time against current members of the Summit League, but Cuonzo Martin is 1-0 vs. Summit League teams, having beaten Oral Roberts at Missouri State.

In The Last Game vs. Oakland...Tennessee suffered its first loss of the 2010-11 season on Dec. 14, 2010, when Oakland posted an 89-82 win at Thompson-Boling Arena ... It was just UT’s third home loss to a non-conference opponent dating to the 2005-06 campaign ... The Vols scored on 15 of their final 20 possessions of the first half to take a 50-39 lead into the break ... But the Grizzlies put together a 50-point second half and shot .536 from the field for the game ... Oakland center Keith Benson totaled 26 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Grizzlies ... Four different Vols scored at least 13 points, but Brian Williams’ 18-point, 13-rebound effort led the way for UT ... Melvin Goins added 18 points, six assists and four steals in the losing effort on his 23rd birthday ... The Vols were out-rebounded 36-35, and UT’s bench was outscored by Oakland’s bench 21-10.

On This Date: Nov. 28Tennessee is 6-3 all-time on Nov. 28 and is riding a three-game win streak on this date ... The Vols’ last game on this date was a 90-78 victory over 21st-ranked Georgetown at the 2008 Old Spice Classic in Orlando, Fla. ... Then a redshirt freshman, Cameron Tatum drained five 3-pointers in the final five min-utes of that game.

Chaminade RecapJordan McRae scored a career-high 25 points on 9-of-12 shooting, including 5-of-7 from 3-point range, to lead Tennessee to an 86-60 win over Chaminade in the seventh-place game of the Maui Invitational ... The Vol took a 45-25 lead into half-time and led by as many as 31 in the second half ... UT outscored the Silverswords 15-0 on the fast break, and UT’s bench outscored Chaminade’s 30-14 ... Other Vols who scored in double fig-ures were Trae Golden (17), Cameron Tatum (12), Renaldo Woolridge (11) and Skylar McBee (10) ... Freshman center Yemi Makanjuola was 3-for-3 from the floor en route to six points and seven rebounds (both season-highs) ... UT was one 3-pointer shy of tying the school record (15-27, .556) ... Chaminade was held to .349 shooting from the floor (22-63) and was led by senior forward Matt Cousins (17 points).

Up Next: PittTennessee hosts No. 9 Pittsburgh Saturday, Dec. 3, at Thompson-Boling Arena (5:15 p.m. ET, ESPN) in the newly expanded Big East/SEC

Challenge ... Tennessee holds a 4-1 all-time advan-tage in head-to-head meetings with Pitt, dating to 1961 ... The Vols shocked third-ranked Pitt at the CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh, Pa., last sea-son ... It was the Panthers’ first non-conference loss in their home city in nearly six years.

Vols On Pace For Close To 300 3-PointersThough the season is young, Tennessee is on pace to make the third-most 3-pointers in program his-tory ... Through five games, the Vols average 9.6 3-pointers made per game ... At that rate, UT’s 31-game regular-season total projects out to 297 ... The Vols made a record 327 treys in 2006-07 and followed that with 312 in 2007-08 ... No other UT teams have made more than 300 ... Chris Lofton, the SEC’s all-time 3-point king, played for each of those top-two 3-point shooting teams.

Maymon Goes #BeastMode vs. Top-10 TigersJunior forward Jeronne Maymon’s 32-point, 20-rebound game against eighth-ranked Memphis at the Maui Invitational (11/22/11) was noteworthy on numerous accounts: It was just the sixth 30-20 game in Tennessee history; it was the first since Steve Hamer posted 31-21 against Alabama in the SEC Tournament on March 7, 1996, in New Orleans (UT won 77-65). It was the first 30-20 game by a “major conference” player since Oklahoma’s Blake Griffin posted one in 2009. The previous two before Griffin’s were recorded by Kansas State’s Michael Beasley and Texas’ Kevin Durant. The 20 rebounds set a Maui Invitational record, breaking the previous mark of 19, set most recently by Kansas’ Nick Collison against Seton Hall in 2001. His 32 points gave him 72 on the season (four games). In 23 previ-ous college games coming into this year, he totaled 73 points. His 32 points vs. Memphis came close to equaling his scoring total from all of last sesaon (37 points in 14 games). His 32 points and 20 rebounds both currently stand as the top individual scoring and rebounding efforts by an SEC player this season.

Is That The Same Guy?That’s what UT fans are asking about junior forward Jeronne Maymon’s uncanny improvement at the free-throw line this season ... The Madison, Wis., native is 24-of-28 (.857) at the stripe this season after shooting an abyssmal 5-of-20 (.250) in 14 games played last year ... Maymon went 16-for-17 at the foul line against No. 8 Memphis in Maui (11/22/11).

McRae On Target From Long RangeSophomore shooting guard Jordan McRae owns a team-best .545 percentage from 3-point range this season (12-for-22), and he made a career-high five treys against Chaminade in Maui (11/23/11) ... As a freshman last year, McRae shot 1-of-9 (.111) from beyond the arc (10 games played).

Golden DimesTrae Golden’s 11-assist outing vs. ULM (11/16/11) was the first double-digit-assist performance by a Vol since Tyler Smith totaled 10 in a win over UNC Asheville on Dec. 3, 2008 ... Tennessee has had only four double-digit-assist performances in the last five seasons (2006-07 to present; Bobby Maze [11] and Dane Bradshaw [11] have the other two).

Golden Earns Season’s First SEC POW AwardEntering this season, sophomore point guard Trae Golden had just one collegiate start to his credit, and he had never scored more than eight points in 31 career games played ... After one game this year, Golden was named SEC Player of the Week on Nov. 14 following a 29-point, six-rebound, nine-assist effort in UT’s 92-63 win over UNCG (11/11/11) ... Golden shot 10-of-14 from the floor and was 5-of-9 from 3-point range vs. the Spartans ... He also made 4-of-5 free-throw attempts, added two steals and one block in 27 minutes.

Golden’s Season-Opening Effort Among UT’s BestTrae Golden’s 29-points against UNC Greensboro in Tennessee’s season-opener Nov. 11 tied for the eighth-highest scoring performance by a Vol in a season-opener.Player Pts Opponent Date ResultBernard King 42 Wis. Vols In The NBASeveral former Tennessee basketball stand-outs now make their living in the NBA ... 2011 Freshman All-America selection Tobias Harris was the 19th pick in June’s

NBA Draft and is now a forward with the Milwaukee Bucks (originally selected by Charlotte; part of three-team draft-day trade) ... Former Vols point guard C.J. Watson (2003-06) is in his fifth NBA season and his second with the Chicago Bulls ... Watson helped lead the Bulls to the Eastern Conference Finals last season ... Tennessee All-America performer Ernie Grunfeld (1974-77) currently occupies the role of president of the Washington Wizards and previously served in simi-lar capacity with the Milwaukee Bucks and the New York Knicks ... Lastly, Tennessee’s all-time lead-ing scorer, Allan Houston (1990-93), was recently appointed by the Knicks’ front office as general manager of that franchise’s NBDL affiliate, the Erie BayHawks ... Tennessee also has two former mem-bers of its national-championship-winning dance team currently performing with NBA dance squads (Sierra Gordon with the Golden State Warriors and Emiliy Bibliowicz with the Orlando Magic).

Nation’s Highest-Scoring Coaching StaffTennessee’s four-man coaching staff scored 5,381 points during their Division I playing days ... McBee Dialed InJunior shooting guard Skylar McBee has been accurate from 3-point range early on this season ... The mustached marauder has made 10-of-19 shots from beyond the arc and boasts a .526 percentage from long range ... He set career-highs for points (15) and 3-pointers made (5) in UT’s home win over ULM (11/16/11).

Grand AccomplishmentFifth-year senior Cameron Tatum is 145 points shy of becoming the 44th member of Tennessee’s 1,000-Point Club ... Entering this season, the 6-7 guard from Lithonia, Ga., averaged 7.8 ppg in 104 career games as a Vol.

Tatum Ascending Tennessee’s Games Played ListIn addition to his approach toward 1,000 career points, senior Cameron Tatum also is rapidly ascending Tennessee’s all-time games played list ... Tatum has seen action in 109 contests during his career ... He’ll break into UT’s all-time top 10 when he plays in his 126th career game, and should he appear in all 31 of Tennessee’s regular-season games this year, he’ll finish his career ranked sec-ond in Vols history with 135 games played.

Chievous Likely To RedshirtCuonzo Martin indicated on Nov. 15 that freshman guard Quinton Chievous (pronounced: CHEE-viss) will likely redshirt this season ... Chievous has yet to appear in a game for the Vols this season ... Said Martin: “It’s just a matter of (Quinton) being more consistent on the perimeter, even though he can shoot and handle the ball really well. Quinton is one of the toughest, if not the toughest, guy on our team, and he can get to the rim as well as anyone. His future with us is as a guard.”

Peaches & CheeseTennessee’s starting lineup at the outset of this sea-son features four Georgia natives (Golden, McRae, Tatum and Hall) and one Wisconsin native (Jeronne Maymon) ... The season-opener vs. UNCG on Nov. 11 marked the first career start for both Maymon and McRae, and it was Golden’s second career start.

Tennessee Earns Seventh-Place Finish In MauiTennessee earned a seventh-place finish in the 2011 EA SPORTS Maui Invitational in November ... The Vols dropped a closely-contested opener to No. 6 Duke and then fell to No. 8 Memphis by two points in double overtime before defeating host school Chaminade on the event’s final day ... UT averaged 83.3 points and 39.7 rebounds per game in Maui while shooting .457 form the field, .393 from 3-point range and .789 at the free-throw line ... Jeronne Maymon led the Vols in scoring (15.3 ppg) and rebounding (10.7 rpg) ... Trae Golden and Jordan McRae both averaged 14.7 points.

Lights Out From Long RangeTennessee made 15 of 24 3-pointers in its season-opener vs. UNC Greensboro (11/11/11) ... The Vols’ .625 3-point percentage against UNCG was the best by a UT team since a .636 (7-11) shooting night from beyond the arc in last season’s win at third-ranked Pitt ... The Vols again drained 15 3-point-ers in a Maui Invitational win over Chaminade (11/23/11) ... UT currently leads the SEC and ranks 19th nationally in 3-point shooting (.440).

Vols Approaching 1,500-Win MilestoneTennessee owns an all-time record of 1,493-947-2 (.612) ... The program needs just seven victories to reach the 1,500-win milestone ... Below is a list of UT’s previous milestone victories:

Five Vols hail from the state of Tennessee, while four are from Geor-gia ... Tennessee has two seniors, five juniors, four sophomores and six freshmen ... The roster includes 11 guards, five forwards and one center ... Nine Vols stand 6-5 or shorter, and eight are 6-6 or taller.

Bring On The BestIn keeping with recent tradition, Tennessee’s sched-ule once again ranks among the most difficult in the nation ... According to head coach Cuonzo Martin: “This is the type of schedule that players want to play.” ... Here are some numbers of note: 17 Naismith Trophy candidates UT will face 14 Games against 2011 NCAA Tournament teams 10 Games against the AP’s preseason top 11 teams 10 Games against top-50 RPI teams from 2010-11

Martin’s Teams Value The BasketballCuonzo Martin’s teams are known for valuing the basketball ... The year before his arrival at Missouri State, the Bears ranked 200th nationally in turn-overs per game and 142nd in assist/turnover ratio ... After just three seasons in Springfield, Martin saw MSU improve 193 spots in the national rankings for turnovers per game and 115 spots nationally in assist/turnover ratio. Martin’s Teams Are High-Scoring, TooValuing possessions, at least with Martin’s teams, has not come at the expense of offensive output ... After just one year at Missouri State, Martin led the Bears from last to first on the Missouri Valley Conference scoring offense chart ... And during the course of Martin’s three years at MSU, the program improved its scoring average nearly 9.0 ppg. November Signees: Reese, Edwards Ink With VolsTennessee signed a pair of tall, athletic wings dur-ing the November signing period ... 6-7, 205-pound Derek Reese, of Olympia High School in Orlando, Fla., joins 6-6, 210-pound D’Montre Edwards (pronounced duh-MAHN-tray), from Charleston, S.C. ... Edwards is currently enrolled at Brevard Community College in Cocoa, Fla., and will have two years of eligibility remaining at Tennessee ... Both players plan to enroll this summer.

Volunteers Boast The SEC’s Longest Active Streak Of NCAA Tournament BidsThe Vols have the longest active NCAA Tournament streak in the Southeastern Conference, earning their sixth consecutive bid last season.

Television Presence Strong Once AgainTennessee is scheduled to play 14 games on national television this season (on CBS and the ESPN family of networks) ... Another 15 contests will be telecast regionally on networks such as Fox Sports Net and the SEC Network ... That means 29 of Tennessee’s 31 regular-season game will be televised.

Notes From The Weight RoomStrength and conditioning coach Troy Wills on which Vols have made noticeable strides in the weight room: “Wes Washpun is one of the most athletic kids we’ve had in a while. He’s got a 41-inch vertical and recorded a time in the pro agility test that is comparable to a lot of the better defenders I’ve had an opportunity to work with in the past seven years.” ... “Trae Golden has put a concerted effort into his training, and the changes he’s made in his body and physical performance are evident. He’s lighter and stronger than he’s ever been, and he’s increased his vertical jump to higher than 35 inches, which is nearly three inches better than last year.” ... “Jeronne Maymon is by far our strongest player, with a bench press well over 300 pounds. Renaldo Woolridge is the most well-rounded athlete we have from a physical standpoint, being a top-three performer in every test. Specifically, he bench pressed 275 pounds, vertical jumps 38 inch-es and he ran the 3/4-court sprint in 3.03 seconds.”

Numerous Degrees Within ReachAccording to team academic counselor Fernandez West, three current Vols are on pace to earn their degree in May ... Those players are Tyler Summitt (Communications, with a Business minor), Cameron Tatum (Africana Studies) and Renaldo Woolridge (Sociology) ... In the past three sea-sons alone, 12 Tennessee basketball players have earned their degrees.

Familiar Faces From AbroadTennessee head coach Cuonzo Martin was hand-picked by USA Basketball to serve as an assistant coach with the 2011 USA Men’s World University Games Team this past summer in Shenzen, China ... Several of the players who were members of that fifth-place squad will be taking the floor against Martin and the Vols this season ... Those play-ers include: Ashton Gibbs (guard, Pittsburgh), JaMychal Green (forward, Alabama), John Jenkins (guard, Vanderbilt) and Darius Miller (guard, Kentucky) ... Prior to the team’s trip to China, it spent a week training at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. During that time, Jenkins spoke highly of Martin’s coaching style ... “The way he coaches is very unique,” Jenkins said. “If you mess up, he will tell you what you did wrong and how to fix it. This helps us out a lot, and it’s been keeping us trying to get better because most coaches don’t do it that way. His style is unique and I like it a lot.”

High-Percentage Hall Junior forward Kenny Hall shoots .551 from the field for his career (81 of 147) ... Nearly half (38 of 81, .469) of Hall’s career field goals have been dunks; that’s as “high-percentage” as it gets.

Miller, Murphy Serving As SAAC RepsJunior forwards Dwight Miller and Rob Murphy are the Tennessee basketball team’s representa-tives on UT’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee this year ... The SAAC serves as a medium of communication through which student-athletes, athletic administrators, institutional officials and coaches discuss and take action on issues relating to rules governance, student-athlete welfare and community service.

Longtime Hoops SID Bud Ford RetiringLongtime UT Media Relations Director Bud Ford in May announced his retirement effective at the end of December ... A Knoxville, Tenn., native and 45-year veteran of his profession, Ford is moving into the position of Athletics Department Historian begin-ning Jan. 1, 2012 ... Ford, hired at UT right out of college in June of 1966, was promoted to his current position of Associate Athletics Director for Media Relations in April 2000 ... Before that, Ford served as primary men’s basketball contact from 1966-85, during the Ray Mears and Don DeVoe eras ... Ford, 66, spent 13 years as UT’s Sports Information Director and then was promoted to Assistant AD for Sports Information ... Ford was inducted into the CoSIDA Hall of Fame in 2001 and later received the pres-tigious Arch Ward Award in 2006 for outstanding contributions to the field of sports information ... At Tennessee home games, Ford serves as the spotter for public address announcer Jeff Jarnigan and occu-pies a seat near center court at the scorer’s table.

Woolridge Duo May Be Unique In Hoops HistoryThe father-son duo of Orlando and Renaldo Woolridge may be the only such duo in NCAA Division I history to each play against and defeat the No. 1-ranked team in the country ... While at Notre Dame, Orlando played in four wins over top-ranked teams, beating Marquette in 1977-78, DePaul in 1979-80 and Kentucky and Virginia in 1980-81 ... Orlando made a 17-foot turnaround shot to beat Virginia at the buzzer and had 12 points and nine rebounds in that game, similar to the 14 points and 8 rebounds his son, Renaldo, had against Kansas on Jan. 10, 2010.

Vols Enjoying World-Class FacilitiesThe University of Tennessee has invested more than $40 million into its basketball facilities since the end of the 2006-07 campaign ... Prior to the 2007-08 sea-son, UT added a basketball-only practice facility and began the first phase of renovations to Thompson-Boling Arena ... The $19 million first phase of renova-tions included the addition of 32 luxury suites that are located in the existing north balcony, a loge area just below the luxury suites that includes 166 side court seats, new seats for the entire arena, a $3 million center-hung scoreboard and concourse refurbishments, such as graphics and other ameni-ties ... The renovations took Thompson-Boling’s capacity down from 24,535 to 21,678 ... The Vols’ state-of-the-art basketball practice facility, Pratt Pavilion, houses two full-size gymnasiums, one for each of the men’s and women’s basketball teams, as well as an athletic training room, weight room and film-study room ... Prior to the 2010-11 season, a pedestrian bridge was constructed lead-ing from the G-10 parking garage to the arena, an elevator was added at the arena’s northwest end as a customer service amenity and new exterior signage was installed on the building’s facade ... The UT athletics department renovated the men’s and women’s basketball offices at the arena during the 2010-11 campaign, creating a new and impres-sive “front door” for the basketball programs ... And new to Thompson-Boling Arena this year is a 360-degree LED ribbon board that runs along the bottom of the upper deck.

Legends In The RaftersFour Tennessee basketball legends are memorial-ized with banners in the Thompson-Boling Arena rafters ... During a halftime ceremony on March 1, 2006, banners honoring longtime head coach Ray Mears (1962-77) and beloved radio “Voice of the Vols” John Ward (1964-99) were unveiled ... The UT men’s basketball program had never retired a jersey prior to the 2006-07 season, but after nearly 100 years of hardwood history, Bernard King (1975-77) was the first player to earn that distinguished honor ... King’s No. 53 jersey was officially retired during a halftime ceremony at the Feb. 13, 2007, home game against Kentucky (UT won 89-85) ... Then on March 2, 2008, Ernie Grunfeld (1974-77) became the sec-ond UT player to receive the ultimate honor, when his No. 22 jersey was unveiled in the rafters during halftime of Tennessee’s 63-60 victory over Kentucky ... Allan Houston (1990-93) became the third such honoree at March 6, 2011, game against Kentucky.

Tennessee Season-Ticket Sales at 13,000+Tennessee has sold more than 13,000 season-ticket packages for the 2011-12 season, Cuonzo Martin’s debut campaign on Rocky Top ... The Vols’ current total of season-ticket sales exceeds the capac-ity of five SEC arenas (Ole Miss [capacity 9,061], Auburn [9,121], Mississippi State [10,500], Georgia [10,523] and Florida [12,000]).

Thompson-Boling Arena Turns 25-Years-OldThe 2011-12 campaign marks Tennessee’s 25th season of basketball in Thompson-Boling Arena ... To commemorate the anniversary, the Volunteers have highlighted great moments in TBA history on this year’s tickets ... Promotions at UT home games will look back on the great players and plays in the facility’s history ... The Vols are 282-100 (.738) all-time in Thompson-Boling Arena, and the venue has hosted 71 men’s games for which the attendance exceeded 20,000 ... In total, TBA has hosted more than 6.2 million fans for UT men’s games.

Friendly ConfinesIn 2010, Martin’s Missouri State team tied Kansas for the national Division I lead in home wins with 19 ... And MSU’s average home attendance increased more than 1,350 fans per game during Martin’s tenure there ... Those figures make for a tremen-dously exciting outlook of what his teams could accomplish in the friendly (and rabid) confines of Thompson-Boling Arena (21,678 capacity).

Vols Among Nation’s “Most Valuable” ProgramsIn the spring of 2010, the Tennessee men’s basket-ball program was included on Forbes.com’s list of the 20 “most valuable” college basketball programs in the country ... The figures showed UT hoops with a value of $14.1 million and a profit of $8.6 million in 2009-10.

Tennessee Stands AloneTennessee is the only Division I school ever to rank in the top five nationally in attendance for football, men’s basketball and women’s basket-ball in the same year ... UT accomplished that feat for the eighth time in 2010-11.

Home Crowds of 20,000 Nothing New For VolsTennessee has played in front of 45 home crowds of 20,000 or larger dating to the 2005-06 season ... The crowd of 22,326 for the 2009 Gonzaga game marked the largest at Thompson-Boling Arena since capacity was reduced from 24,535 to 21,678 prior to the 2007-08 campaign ... Tennessee also has hosted ESPN College GameDay twice in the last four seasons.

The Volunteers At Thompson-Boling Arena Thompson-Boling Arena is hosting its 25th season in 2011-12 ... The Vols have won nearly 75 percent of their games in Thompson-Boling Arena and have ranked in the top 10 nationally in attendance 11 times, including an active streak of five consecutive seasons in which UT has ranked in the top five.• Tennessee is 282-100 (.738) in 25 seasons in Thompson-Boling Arena.• Since the 1998 season, the Vols are 182-41 (.816) in Thompson-Boling Arena.• The Vols are 83-29 against SEC teams at home over the last 11 seasons.• Tennessee has won 31 of its last 40 SEC games at Thompson-Boling Arena.• UT has won 106 of its last 118 home games against non-conference opponents.• Tennessee finished both the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons with a 16-0 home record.• Sporting News recently tabbed Thompson-Boling Arena the “best homecourt advantage” in the

Southeastern Conference for three consecutive years.
