“DESERVE TO WIN” } TSU Head Coach Brian “Penny” Collins has dubbed “Deserve to Win” his phrase for the team.} It is a philosophy that encompasses every aspect of the program from work in the weightroom to how the coaches and student-athletes interact with the community. } The roster contains ”well-rounded, high-character individuals, with high basketball IQs who lead by example on and off the court.”

QUALITY OPPONENTS } This year’s slate includes high-profile matchups against Texas Tech (Nov. 21), San Diego State (Nov. 25) and Indiana State (Dec. 18), as well as a trip to the Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational against Cal Poly, which will be followed by a game against LIU Brooklyn or North Florida.

WHY PENNY? } Head Coach Brian “Penny” Collins got his name as a kid. Collins, born in Memphis, moved to Nashville as a young pre-teen. In honor of his favorite college and NBA player, Penny Hardaway who played in his hometown, Collins would sport the Magic jersey while on the court. The name stuck. } Collins claims both Memphis and Nashville as his hometown, as he was born in one, and raised in the other.

A WIN WOULD... }Mark TSU’s 64rd win over the last five seasons.

MEASURING UP }Head Coach Collins finished his first season at the helm 9-21, giving him better first-year record than six previous TSU men’s basketball coaches - Henry A. Kean [9-10] (1944-49, 1950-51), Ron Abernathy [7-21] (1989-91), Frankie Allen [4-21] (1991-00), Cy Alexander [7-21] (2003-08), John Cooper (9-21) [2009-12], and Dana Ford [5-25] (2014-18).

NATIONALLY RANKED } The Tigers are ranked in the top 100 in the NCAA in the following categories:

} 7 in field-goal percentage} 32 in scoring offense} 35 in rebound margin} 35 in three-point field goal percentage } 51 in blocked shots per game}52 in scoring margin} 63 in assists per game} 65 in three-point field goals per game } 74 in defensive rebounds per game}78 in total rebounds per game}83 in three-point field-goal defense}94 in total three-point field goals made}98 in total assists

TREY WAY } Six different Tigers have made three pointers so far this season, five of which average a .400+.

} Redshirt sophomore Carlos Marshall Jr. leads the pack with seven made three-pointers so far this season.} The Tigers are averaging 24.5 attempts from three-point range per game through 2 games and are shooting .555 from the distance.} Freshman Mark Freeman, Wesley Harris and Jy’lan Washington are the most accurate from the distance, with a .500 3-point field goal percentage this season.} The Tigers lead the Ohio Valley Conference in three-point field goals made per game after sinking 17 versus Alabama A&M and four at Chatt.

LITTLEJOHN AT THE HELM }Senior Michael Littlejohn has taken over as point guard, and the Tigers are 3-5 under his lead. }The Muskegon, Mich. native leads the team, conference and 30th in the nation in assists per game with seven.

STAYING LOCAL } The roster contains three players from Tennessee - Mark Freeman (Memphis), Carlos Marshall, Jr. (Memphis) and Jy’lan Washington (Smyrna). } Head coach Brian Collins was born in Memphis and raised in Nashville, as well as the Senior Advisor Ricky Collins, Brian’s father.

NEW BUT EXPERIENCED } Of the 12 Tiger newcomers, six have Division I playing experience, three with Power 5 universities.} For his second season leading the blue and white, head coach Brian Collins added Ricky Collins, his father, to the TSU men’s basketball coaching staff as the Senior Advisor to the Head Coach. Collins is a member of two basketball hall of fames, has won three Coach of the Year awards and is an OVC Champion himself, after leading the MTSU to the tournament championships in 1975.

GOING LONG } The average height of the Tennessee State roster increased to 6-5, with nine athletes measuring in at 6-5 and above.

ABOUT THE TIGERS } TSU brings back just letterwinners from a year ago including forward Emmanuel Egbuta, who averaged 6.9 points and 4.9 rebounds, and point guard Michael Littlejohn, who averaged 9.1 points, two three-point field goals made, 1.3 assists and 1.6 rebounds per game coming off of the bench. } Collins will work to blend a talented group of newcomers with the returners, including three players who redshirted in 2018-19.

SITTING OUT } Three players on TSU’s roster redshirted last season and are getting a chance to play this season}Monty Johal (redshirt), Jy’lan Washington (sat out due to NCAA transfer rules - from LaTech), and Carlos Marshall, Jr. (redshirt).
