Athletic Philosophy and Goals: Athletics is an elective class, and it is a privilege to be able to compete and to represent Staley Middle School. With privilege comes responsibility, and we as a coaching staff have high expectations of our athletes. These behaviors will be modeled by the coaches at all times and will be expected of all athletes:

To work hard at practice; To compete within the rules; To put the interests of the team over the interests of the individual; To show respect for teammates, opponents, coaches, spectators, and officials; To be humble in victory and gracious in defeat.

We emphasize fundamental skills and development of the total athlete by encouraging athletes to participate in multiple sports and to learn multiple positions within a sport. We want our athletes to develop a love for their sport(s), a strong work ethic, a coachable attitude, a team-first mentality, and positive communication skills. We want our athletes to enjoy competition and to strive to win, but ultimately we measure success not by wins and losses but by effort and improvement. We want to prepare our athletes not just to be successful in athletics, but to be successful in life. Uniforms and Equipment:

Each athlete should wear her own assigned practice uniform, white socks, and athletic shoes every day. Coaches will not let athletes borrow any workout clothes or shoes.

Hair should be worn up with ponytail holders or cloth scrunchies only. According to UIL rules,

jewelry and hard hair clips are not allowed in games, so they are not allowed in practice.

If an athlete has asthma, this must be indicated by a physician on her physical form. Inhalers are considered part of the athletic equipment, and it is each athlete’s responsibility to bring her inhaler to practices and games.

Athletes are responsible for all equipment that is issued to them. Equipment should be locked up

when not in use, and athletes should not share lockers or give their locker combination to anyone. Athletes will have to pay for any lost or damaged equipment.

Athletes should not wear athletic uniforms or equipment anywhere except to SMS practices and

games. The only exception to this is in-season 7th graders wearing their practice clothes to their 8th period class.

All athletes trying out for tennis need to have this

signed and returned.

STALEY MUSTANGS TENNIS POLICIES

Objectives To create a tennis team which consists of student athletes who represent Staley Middle School in an exemplary way. To learn a life-long sport while also learning life-long skills. Responsibilities and Rules A physical exam is required before a player can compete in tennis matches for Staley. All players are expected to attend practices and matches. Tennis players have a set amount of time to get dressed for practices during class. Players need to provide a racket at all practices and matches. Practices may include any of the following: stretching, running, rope jumping, weight lifting, tennis drills, tennis games, match play, and any other conditioning skills. Students will not be able to leave the tennis courts until the end of class for any reason, including going to the locker room. Lockers and Uniforms Each student will be issued his or her own locker with a combination padlock. It is highly recommended that students do not share lockers, borrow clothes, or give their combination to anyone else. Students should lock all personal items in their locker before class and should always close and lock their lockers before they leave the locker room. Students are required to dress out every day in the standard FISD Physical Education uniform. This uniform consists of a gray t-shirt and black shorts and can be purchased at Frisco Sports Center. Students are required to wear socks and athletic shoes every day. Students will lose points off their grade each time they are not dressed out. Players that are participating in matches will be provided Staley Tennis T-shirts, sweatshirts, and sweatpants for matches. Players will provide their own shorts that must be Staley dress code compliant. The items that are issued to the players must be returned at the end of the year and in good condition for future use. Any lost or damaged items must be paid for at fair market value. Jewelry is not allowed in tennis for safety reasons. This includes rings, earrings, bracelets, necklaces, watches, etc that the coaches feel could be dangerous. Jewelry should be locked in the student’s locker before going to the gym.
