The Present Progressive Tense

The Progressive Tenses Progressive tenses are grammatical tenses that express incomplete action or state in progress at a specific time. They are also known as continuous tenses: • Present Progressive or Present Continuous tense • Past Progressive or Past Continuous tense • Future Progressive or Future Continuous tense

The Present Progressive Tense Definition: Present Progressive Tense is a

form of the verb used express:

o that something is happening at the time of speaking.

o that an activity is in progress

o that the action is temporary or being planned

The Present Progressive Tense Format:

• am + verb+ ing – used only with personal pronoun “I”

o I am attending a seminar on “Wellness and Health now.

o I am graduating from college this school year.

The Present Progressive Tense

• is+verb+ing – used with third person singular pronouns, all singular nouns, all collective nouns considered as a unit

o He is telling us about his travels.

o She is practicing her dance for tonight.

o Marion is applying for a scholarship.

o The chair is showing signs of wear.

o The choir is having a rehearsal at the gym.

The Present Progressive Tense

• are+verb+ ing- used with all plural nouns and pronouns and collective nouns taken individually.

o The students are attending a symposium now.

o They are lining by the sidewalk waiting for their turn to vote.

o The basketball team are fitting their new uniforms.

The Present Progressive Tense Conditions in the use of Present Progressive

Tense:

• the “Now” happening or current trends

o The baby is feeding now.

o The prices of prime commodities are going up again.

• limited duration – refers to activities designed not to last long

o Please wait. The doctor is treating the scratches of your son.

The Present Progressive Tense

• Longer duration – refers to long-term activities that started at some vague time in the past and is expected to continue for an indefinite time in the future.

o Jenna is taking up medicine.

o Ms. Ramos is teaching sign language to hearing disabled children.

The Present Progressive Tense • Future plans- the action is being planned to

be done in the future

oI am planning to export avocados to Japan.

oKaren is saving part of her salary for her wedding.

oWe are expecting the arrival of a new member of our family this December.
