Meditation: "The Lord had compassion on her"
The Scriptures make clear that God takes no pleasure in the death of anyone (see Ezekiel 33:11) - he desires life, not death. Jesus not only had heart-felt compassion for the widow who lost her only son, he also had extraordinary supernatural power - the ability to restore life and to make a person whole again. Jesus, however, did something which must have shocked the sensibilities of the widow and her friends. Jesus approached the bier to make physical contact with the dead man. The Jews understood that contact with a dead body made oneself ritually unclean or impure. Jesus' physical touch and personal identification with the widow's loss of her only son not only showed the depths of his love and concern for her, but pointed to his desire to free everyone from the power of sin and moral corruption, and even death itself. Jesus' simple word of command - "Young man, arise" - not only restored him to physical life, but brought freedom and wholeness to his soul as well as his body.
By his word of power he restored life for a lad marked for death. Jesus is Lord not only of the living but of the dead as well. When Jesus died on the cross for our sins he also triumphed over the grave when he rose again on the third day, just as he had promised his disciples. Jesus promises everyone who believes in him, that because he lives (and will never die again), we also shall have abundant life with and in him both now and forever (John 14:19). Do you trust in the Lord Jesus to give you abundant life and everlasting hope in the face of life's trials, misfortunes, and moments of despair?

Fortnight for Freedom | The Catholic Church in the United States will ob-serve a Fortnight for Freedom, June 21-July 4. The Fortnight is a time for pray-er, education, and action to support and defend religious freedom in our Na-tion and around the world. This year’s Fortnight will celebrate past and present “witnesses to religious freedom.”
The Archdiocese of Baltimore will host events to mark the Fortnight, beginning with the nationally-televised national opening Mass, celebrated by Archbishop William E. Lori, at the Baltimore Basilica on June 21st at 7pm. More information can be found at www.archbalt.org.
Wellness Matters From Our Parish Health Nurse, Lisa Bohrer Caffeine can provide a little “pick me up” if you are struggling to stay awake but this common stimulant, found in many coffees and teas also can cause a number of unwanted side effects. Watch out for these potential side effects:
Dizziness, nausea, headache and/or insomnia
Anxiety or irritability
Rapid heart rate
Reduction in fine motor coordination
Urinating more frequently
*Summer Lunch Box Program | The George’s Creek Ministerial Assoc. is planning for the Summer Lunch Box Program, which provides free lunches from the Midland to Barton areas when school is not in session. This program is operated by several churches/groups working together beginning June 6 through August 19. Registration forms will be distributed at the schools. Last year, 2628 lunches were served over the course of the summer. They will be distributed at the Barton Fire Hall, the First Presbyterian Church of Lonaconing, and the Midland Fire Hall.
St. Joseph’s week is scheduled for August 1-5. Parishioners are needed to help with this program to make it a success. If you can help, please contact Pat or Sharon Stakem at 301-689-5210. Plastic grocery bags donations are needed. A sign-up sheet will also be available on the bulletin board at St. Joseph Church.
George’s Creek Food Pantry | Monetary and food donations are greatly appreciated. Monetary donations may be dropped in the Poor Box at St. Joseph Church, or mail a check to George’s Creek Ministerial Association, PO Box 216, Lonaconing, MD 21539. Needed items: canned fruit, soups, vegetables, meats, spaghetti, sauce, hamburger helpers, boxed potatoes, peanut butter, jelly, mac & cheese, pancake mix, syrup, and cereals. Donations can be placed in the Food Pantry container at the entrance of St. Joseph Church. Contact Pat and Sharon Stakem at 301-689-5210 for information.
Frostburg and Tri-Towns Food Pantry | St. Michael and St. Peter Food collection will take place the 3rd Sunday of the month. Please consider picking up extra groceries when you shop. Consider canned meats, tuna, vegetables, pancake mix, spaghetti sauce or hamburger helper for St. Peter. The Frostburg Food Pantry is in need of dish soap, paper products, toiletries, household supplies for laundry and cleaning.
1st Way Pregnancy Center | 24/7 Helpline (301-777-1261) with trained staff who offers educational, material and spiritual support to women who find themselves in need before and during their pregnancies and after the baby’s birth. Donations are collected at Divine Mercy Parish the first Sunday of the month.

Little Bethlehem Christians is a group that represents 200 Christian Families who live in Bethlehem, the holy land, and make their living as
wood carvers. After all Saturday and Sunday Masses at St. Michael and
St. Peter on June 18 & 19, the group represented by the Alsahouri family
will display a collection of hand-carved olive wood religious items
for sale. The profit goes to support the Christians in the land of Christ.
