SCHOOL COUNCIL:

It is that time of the year again where I am seeking parent nominations for School Council. This can be a rewarding experience and comes at a time when the school is experiencing a lot of change with new buildings. Below is a bit of information about School Council.

WHAT IS A SCHOOL COUNCIL AND WHAT DOES IT DO?

All government schools in Victoria have a school council. They are legally constituted bodies that are given powers to set the key

directions of a school within Statewide guidelines. In doing this, a school council is able to directly influence the quality of education that the school provides for its students.

WHY IS PARENT MEMBERSHIP SO IMPORTANT?

Parents on school councils provide important viewpoints and have valuable skills that can help shape the direction of the school.

DO I NEED SPECIAL EXPERIENCE TO BE ON SCHOOL COUNCIL?

Each member brings their own valuable life skills and knowledge to the role. What you do need is an interest in your child's school and the desire to work in partnership with others to help shape the school's future.

HOW LONG IS A TERM Of OFFICE?

Two years with half of the members retiring each year which creates vacancies for the annual school council elections. Meetings are held the third Monday of every month.

WHERE TO IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO NOMINATE?

Nomination forms are available at the back of Tech Talk or on the information rack at the General Office.

If you have further questions please do not hesitate to contact me at the school.

I would like to encourage our parent community to think about nominating for School Council. Together, we can continue to work to make Kerang Technical High School a School to be proud of.

IMMUNISATION REMINDERS—Yr 7 and 10: All Yearr 7 and 10 Students received last week information regarding Immunisations . This included Information about the program and the Immunisation Card itself. Can these cards please be returned ASAP to the box at the General office so the Gannawarra Shire can finalise these arrangements.

SCHOOL PHOTOS SENT OUT TODAY: All Yr 8-12 students received Photo envelopes this week in Home Group. These are NOT to be returned to the School until students hand them to the photographer on the 1st March. A lot of families utilise the online ordering of these photos to speed up the process and eliminate lost envelopes. Any families wishing to have a Family photo taken there are additional envelopes placed at the front office.

UPDATE OF FAMILY DETAILS: Periodically we are asked by the Education Department to check Contact Details, Medical Information and Family

Occupation to ensure all the details are accurate. The details are important to protect your child’s safety when trying to

contact family and if medical information changes. The family occupation is directly linked to the funding that K.T.H.S.

receives for our students.

As with all businesses we are looking at ensuring we can achieve the best possible outcome for our students and this piece of information is very important. We would appreciate if all information could be updated by end of term.

CAMPS, SPORT and EXCURSIONS FUND (C.S.E.F.) In 2015 the Department of Education and Training introduced the CSEF of $225.00 per student, and it has continued again this year. This money can only be used to pay for Camps, Sporting Activities and Excursions.

To be eligible to apply for this payment, parents/guardians must be in receipt of a Centrelink Health Care Card or Pension Card as at 1st day of Term 1 – 29th January. New parents to claim for the CSEF payment, parents/guardians who have claimed in other years we just need an updated copy of your Health Care Card. Please make your application a.s.a.p. The money will be paid directly to the School and credited against the family account. Terms and conditions have been placed on this payment, it cannot be refunded at the end of the year and it will carry over into 2019. If students transfer to another School, the money remaining will be transferred to the new School.

STATE SCHOOLS’ RELIEF - YEAR 7 UNIFORM PACKAGE As part of the Victorian Government’s funding for school uniforms, every 2018 Year 7 Government school student who is a recipient of the CSEF will be eligible for a uniform pack to the value of $225.00. If you applied and received the CSEF from your Primary School last year, you will be eligible for a summer package. Most parents will have already purchased the Summer uniforms, therefore you may use this “voucher” for a Winter package. The Uniform pack includes basic items:

Jumper or Rugby Top For girls: Summer dress, shorts or slacks

Blue, Maroon or Sports Polo Shirts For boys: Shorts or long trousers.

As KTHS runs a Uniform Store, which is open on a weekly basis each Tuesday, the voucher will be sent to the School, this will be issued to parents to use at the KTHS Uniform store. The voucher is valid for 75 days, from date of issue. The maximum voucher value is $225.00 and any shortfall will need to be paid by parents/guardians.

VICTORIAN CONVEYANCE ALLOWANCE - PRIVATE VEHICLE This is an allowance that can be claimed by parents who are required to drive their children more than 4.8kms to their nearest bus stop. The only condition is that you must not be bypassing your nearest Government School. Parents need only apply once when your child starts Year 7, and this will continue through Secondary School, unless of course you move residences. An allowance based on kilometres is paid per child per term to the School, which will paid to parents/guardians, usually at the end of each semester. Claim forms are available from the General Office, applications close on Thursday, 1st March. Those parents/guardians who are already in receipt of this allowance, are not required to complete another application unless you have a child starting Year 7.

FAMILY STATEMENTS School accounts were mailed out this week. Payment can be made by cash or cheque at the Office, via Bpay or Direct Deposit. Payments to be finalised as per Parent Payment 2018 sheet which was attached to the Booklist. Should you wish to make alternative arrangements please contact the Office.

A big thank you to all the staff members who helped the day run smoothly. A special mention goes to the following parents; Kelly Heffer, Nicole Hogg and Kristen Hall who volunteered their precious time to assist throughout the day. Well done to the Year 12 Cohort who

participated in their last house swimming sports. Their outfits were outstanding and took a lot of time to prepare.

Although their racing tactics were questionable in the annual staff/student race, they managed to unfairly defeat the teachers.

The Swan Hill Division Swimming Sports to be held on Friday, 23rd February in Swan Hill.

Students have been notified that they qualified this week.

Best wishes to all participants going on to the next stage to represent KTHS.

Immunisations are coming up against

Meningococcal disease. It is relatively rare but is very often serious.

Today, even with antibiotic treatment, the mortality rate is approximately 5–10%.

Most meningococcal disease occurs in young children <5 years of age and in older ad-

olescents/young adults (15–24 years of age).

Vaccines: are generally considered safe and well tolerated.

Vaccine is recommended for all <5 and adolescents aged 15–19 years.

Immunisation Forms will be distributed soon, please bring them back to School

promptly and be immunised against this potentially fatal disease.

Cheers

Meg, Paul & Michael.
