Welcome

Welcome back to the 2020 school year. I trust you and your family had an enjoyable and safe holiday and

your children are excited to be back at school, or like our 56 kindergarten children, commencing school.

This year we look forward to 401 students being at our school. We have formed 16 classes and the stu-

dents have been placed in their new classes. The details for each class and a map of our school are printed

in this newsletter.

Welcome to our Kindergarten

On Tuesday we welcomed our 2020 Kindergarten students to our school. There were big smiles, very shiny shoes, slightly oversized uniforms and a few tears (from parents). Starting Kindergarten is not only a won-derful time for families, but a critical year for setting a foundation of learning success. I would like to thank the Kindergarten teachers and support staff for ensuring all of our students have had a great start to their formal schooling.

Parent Information Night

I look forward to seeing you at Parent/Teacher Information Night on Wednesday 12 Feb and at our first

P&C Meeting which will be held on Monday 17 February. A strong partnership between school and home is

extremely important and as part of this you are most welcome to speak with me at any time. If you wish

to speak to the teacher of your child please arrange a suitable time as they also have a class to manage and

organisational things to do. The teachers are extremely busy and so as children are entering the room in

the morning or as the dismissal bell goes in the afternoon is probably not the best time to try and talk. By

making a time convenient to both ensures productive communication.

Change is a Normal Part of Life

The beginning of each school year is exciting but can be a little daunting for some students. At the end of

last year teachers spent a lot of time determining class placements, considering the educational and social

needs of each student. Rest assured, it is normal for most of us to be a little nervous about change. If your

child shows any signs of distress regarding starting in a new class, we encourage you to speak positively

about change and reinforce that being a little worried is normal. Teachers are equipped to support stu-

dents transition into new classes. In the vast majority of cases, children adjust quickly and confidently,

often better than us! We ask that you allow time for adjustments to settle and that you speak positively

about your child's placement before contacting teachers.

Parent Teacher Information Night

Wednesday 12 Feb is Parent information night. Parent/Teacher Information Nights are designed to wel-

come you and provide a range of information. The Information Night will be held at the following times.

5:30pm Kindergarten and Year 5 and 6 (including 5/6M) meeting in classrooms

6:00pm Year 1 and 2 (including 1/2F) meeting in classrooms

6:30pm Year 3 and 4 meeting in Library initially

Holiday Work

The completion of the canteen was carried out during the holidays at a furious pace. We are most fortunate

that the contractors worked in with the school and thanks to some early preliminary work we have our can-

teen well ahead of time. It looks spectacular and will provide Michelle and her volunteers a pleasing and

spacious environment to work in. Thank you to the P&C for providing the funds to enable this refurbish-

ment. Thankyou to Michelle and her team who helped complete the plans and to Kath and P&C executive.

‘Top Tips’ to help your child enjoy school

Below is a brief summary of the five top tips published by the website ‘Parenting Ideas’.

1. Switch on to your child’s strengths – Allow your child to feel good about something they enjoy has

unlimited benefits.

2. Balancing kids’ extra-curricular activities – Allow time for relaxing or ‘vegging out’ as well as afternoon

sport/cultural activities.

3. Focus on Friendships – providing opportunities for children to have a sense of belonging and identity.

Promote 1:1 after school play, sporting and cultural activities and show children how to be friendly.

4. Develop strategies to manage anxious moments – children will feel worried about certain situations.

We need to talk them through these situations, support them and explain that these situations are

normal.

5. Develop rights of passage – celebrating important milestones like the completion of Primary School,

becoming a teenager, starting your first part-time job. The journey towards adulthood needs to be

celebrated at certain points.

Wideview is truly a wonderful community

Last Week unfortunately a pre-schooler sustained an injury on the fixed equipment. Thanks to the prompt

actions of 2 parents from our school immediate medical assistance was rendered. Both parents remained at

the scene with the child and parent until the departure of the ambulance–4:15 pm despite having children

of their own to care for. It is so humbling to see our school community members willing to give that little

extra and the reason we have such a fantastic school. It is, however, a timely reminder of the dangers of

children using the fixed equipment without supervision.

Novel Coronavirus Advice as of Feb 1

In accordance, with the latest update fro Feb 1 by the NSW Government, issued by the Ministers for Health

and Education, the NSW Departments of Health and Education have recommended that any student who

was in China over the past 14 days should not return to school or child care services, as the coronavirus'

incubation period can be as long as two weeks. Students who returned to Australia more than 14 days ago

and have shown no symptoms should be able to return to school this week. The same advice applies to

staff in our schools.

As previously advised staff and students should be excluded from work and school if they are a:

confirmed case of Novel Coronavirus - exclusion will remain in place until they are medically cleared

to return.

close contact of a confirmed case of Novel Coronavirus - exclude for 14 days since last contact with

the confirmed case.

Close contact is defined as living in the same household, 15 minutes face-to-face contact with a person

with confirmed coronavirus in any setting, or sharing a closed space with a person with confirmed corona-

virus for more than 2 hours.

NSW Health has processes in place to identify any close contacts of cases confirmed in NSW. Advice about

not attending school would be provided to these close contacts.

The Department of Education continues to work closely with the Ministry of Health to monitor and respond

to the unfolding international Novel Coronavirus situation.

In accordance with normal protocols staff and children who are unwell with respiratory illness should re-

main at home until symptoms resolve.

Calling all debaters in Years 3 to 6!

Debating Club is back for 2020. This is a great opportunity to develop your public speaking, debating and

thinking skills. Each session contains games and activities to build your communication, persuasive writing

and debating abilities. Plus, you get lots of opportunities to participate in debates with other students to

greatly improve your confidence.

Debating Club will be held in the library every Monday morning from 8.15 until 9, commencing in Week 5 of

Term 1 and continuing all year. Weekly attendance is expected as you will be part of a team.

If you are in Years 3 to 6 and would like to get involved, pick up a registration form at the library and return

it by Friday 14 February (Week 3).

Please note that you will need approval from your parent/carer as this is a before-school activity.

Wideview Dance Groups 2020

Thank you to the students who have shown interest in being a part of the 2020 dance troupes!

We will have a junior dance group (years 3 & 4) on a Tuesday morning, and senior dance group (years 5 & 6)

on Wednesday morning. These groups run Term 1 – Term 3.

Dance troupes are capped at 24 dancers which may result in auditions in week 3.

Attendance for the weekly practices and to perform at the Sydney North Dance Festival at the end of term 2

is compulsory.

If your child would like to audition to be in one of the dance groups and has not yet put their name down, please email chelsea.hefford4@det.nsw.edu.au before Monday 10th February.

P&C Update

Welcome to the school year 2020. To those new families, the Wideview P&C Association is very active in

the school. We meet on the 3rd Monday night of each month during the school term. All are welcome, feel

free to just show up, we have meetings in the office staffroom. Our first one for the year will be held on

Monday February 17th at 7pm. We look forward to seeing some familiar and new faces there on the night.

For those new families, our P&C run our before and after school service (WOOSHC), the Canteen, the Uni-

form Shop and Band (open to kids year 3 and above). We have a number of volunteers helping out with

these subcommittees and there are plenty of other ways to volunteer and help out during the year. The

kids always love seeing Mum, Dad, Grandparent or other adult in their life helping out at school.

Planning is already underway for 2020, we’ve got a colour run later in the year, as well as some regular

events like the Mothers Day Stall. If there’s anything you’d like to organise or run please let us know!

The Athletes Foot – THANK YOU

A reminder that the Athletes Foot donate money to the school for every pair of shoes purchased there at

the moment. Thank you to everyone who has purchased shoes there so far.

WOOSHC Update

There was no rest over the holidays for WOOSHC and our WOOSHC Subcommittee. The kids had a ball at vacation care and the subcommittee were busy recruiting for a new Service Manager for WOOSHC. We’re pleased to announce Brandi Heitman started with us last week. Please welcome Brandi to WOOSCH.

Canteen Upgrade

The Canteen committee have been working hard over the break and we’re pleased to announced that the

renovations are complete and we now have a much larger canteen space. Michelle Ricketts and Mel Hicks

have put in a huge amount of work on this project, thank you to both of you. Not only do we have a brand-

new canteen space, but we have also passed as a healthy canteen. After 1 ½ years of working on the can-

teen menu we have passed the new NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy. Congratulations to Michelle,

our canteen manager, and the subcommittee, on this achievement.

As always, we need plenty of volunteers in the canteen. Please follow the Café 4 kids – Wideview Public

Canteen page on Facebook, there’s a link there to volunteer. On the page there Michelle has started to

put up ingredients lists for those parents interested in the ingredients of canteen items.

Here are some photos of the canteen reno. It’s hard to capture the size of it, but it really looks amazing.
