FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Welcome back to the new school year at Gawler and District
College B-12, we are all looking forward to another positive
and rewarding year. I would particularly like to welcome new
students and their families to our college and wish you all a
smooth transition to our site. You have joined an outstanding
learning community with a reputation for the pursuit of
excellence, a focus on wellbeing and a belief in lifelong
learning. Working together with our wonderful staff, supporting all students and making a
positive difference with learning, care and the development of every student is an absolute
priority at our college. It has been wonderful meeting so many children, students and adults
as I have walked around our site over the past four weeks. Students are engaged in their
learning and are provided with a broad range of exciting learning opportunities. 2020 is an
important year as we look to consolidate and build on the excellent work of the college.
Congratulations to our 2019 Year 12 students who collectively achieved pleasing results
across a broad range of subjects studied last year. A special congratulations to Brayden
Pollard the Dux of the College achieving the highest ATAR score for 2019 at GDC. 2019 saw
88.4% of Year 12 students who wanted to enter a university course receiving offers to
university, what a wonderful achievement. There were also significant increases in the
number of A grades achieved in 2019. We wish all the very best for our 2019 Year 12
Graduates in all their future endeavours and look forward to hearing about their future
successes.
A special welcome to new staff appointed this year to the college including staff in
leadership positions, I warmly welcome you all and wish you a successful and rewarding
year at GDC.
Our commitment to our students and families lies in our strength of our school as a
professional community to work together positively with colleagues, to share practices,
learn from professional conversations, reflect, challenge and celebrate growth and
improvement ensuring successful outcomes for all students. Our focus as a site is learning
with an absolute commitment to increasing student achievement in reading across our site.
Central to realising improved student outcomes are:

Improving Attendance – Students do not learn if they are not at school and as a consequence our teaching is not as
effective. I ask everyone to work together to build a culture of attendance and time on task in every class. This will include
staff working together with families, scrutinising levels of student engagement and creating community awareness of the
importance and quality of what we offer.
A relentless focus on literacy and in particular reading - Without literacy skills our children and young people will struggle to
lead rich lives, to plan, think critically and creatively, and to solve problems.
Continuing to build the capacity of our staff and improving the quality of our work through performance development with a
focus on pedagogy – Stretching and engaging our learners to achieve student learning outcomes and building our own
and others’ capacity. Assessment for learning, learning design, planning collaboratively and feedback from colleagues
and students are also essential to improving professional practice.
I look forward to working with all in our community, building upon the significant work that already has been achieved.

THE GAWLER AND DISTRICT FOUNDATION AND ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE
Your Opportunity to Experience the Year of your Life!
In the recent year I have had the wonderful opportunity to begin
participating in a Full-Time student exchange overseas for 12 months. This
amazing adventure definitely wouldn’t have been possible without the
generous support from Damien and Anna Brown. They offered, through
the Gawler and District Foundation, $5,000 for a student from Gawler and
District College to take part in the Rotary Youth Exchange. So far, I have
been living in Germany for 4 weeks. Of course, it has its challenges, but
knowing what I do now I would still have more than willingly said “yes”
and strived to take this opportunity and everything that has come with it
so far.
This unique experience is available to another Gawler and District College
student this year. If selected by Rotary you could be experiencing
another culture and country in 2021!
It is such a great experience and I would 100% recommend it to anyone
who wants to see the world and have the year of their lives.
For more information about applying for a Rotary Youth Exchange

HERE’S WHAT’S NEW IN AGRICULTURE
Last week Iceberg Lettuce, Leek, Cauliflower, Capsicum and Savoy
Cabbage seedlings were planted. Over the coming weeks we will
plant a variety of other seedlings. The aim is to generate enough
produce to be able to market it in "GDC Market Days". We will keep
you posted ahead of time, but will be in the second half of the term.

JUNIOR SCHOOL
We all extend a warm welcome to staff and students new to Gawler & District College Junior School in 2020. This year we
welcome Lynda Rivett as our Assistant Head of Junior School. New teaching staff for 2020 includes Sarah O’Driscoll, Hiba
Eljourdi & Lydia D’Ambrosio. We warmly welcome the new Receptions and their families our Junior School.
Our 2020 Acquaintance Night was held Thursday 6 February between
5.00pm - 6.05pm. Teachers were available in their rooms and presented
some information about their learning programs this year. Thank you to
the many families who were able to attend.
We are super proud to be able to provide uniquely designed Junior
School reading diaries this year. They will enable us to continue to
spotlight and promote our major focus on Home Reading. Reading five
nights a week is crucial for accelerated reading progress. In addition to
the Reading diaries we will be providing reading bags for every child in
our Junior School. We will expect that these special reading tools will be
cared for respectfully and with pride.

Week 7, Friday 13 March 2020
The Principal and staff of Gawler & District College B-12 would like to extend an invitation to all parents of students to the
Middle & Senior School Sports Day for 2020, to be held on the Darren Lehmann School Oval.
Students have been allocated to the four traditional Houses:
Angas (Red) Barossa (Blue) Murray (Green) Para (Gold)
Attendance by students is compulsory for the entire day:
All students are required to attend Sports Day, even if not participating in an event. If your child has a particular injury or
condition which prohibits any form of physical activity, their vocal support for their house or their assistance as an official to
help time or place events will contribute towards their house’s total points for the day.
Dress Expectations and Sun Care:
To ensure sun safety and skin protection, we strongly recommend all students to wear a hat and apply 30+ sunscreen both
prior to arrival and throughout the day. We encourage students to wear clothing to represent their House for the full day.
Appropriate sporting footwear (no sandals) and clothes, must be worn by all students.
Water consumption:
Water will be readily available throughout the day. It is crucial that all students remain hydrated throughout the carnival.
Athletic Excellence:
Students will compete in age events including sprinting, relays, tug of war and novelty events etc. Points will be awarded to
all contestants. The emphasis is on participation and teamwork.
Risk Management:
This is a normal school day conducted on the grounds.
If you wish for your child to not participate in actual sporting events please provide a note in their diary prior to the day. All
gates throughout the school will be locked, except the Main Gate in front of Administration. All visitors will need to access
the school via this entrance. Please be mindful that pet dogs are not permitted on school grounds. Students are not
permitted to leave the school grounds.
Catering and Fundraising Activities:
The School Canteen will be open for business all day plus a BBQ. Students are encouraged to bring their own lunch if they
are not wanting to use the facilities available.
There will be various fundraising activities occurring throughout the day.
We welcome student’s parents and friends to attend and cheer on their team!

MIDDLE SCHOOL
On behalf of all the Middle School Team I would like to warmly welcome all of our students back to the 2020 school year.
Our Year 7 cohort has transitioned from the Junior school and have settled in very well. We have been joined by a number
of new students who are adapting very well to being part of a large secondary school. The Year 7 Home Care teachers this
year are Bec Impala (7A) and Caitlin Hilliard (7B).
We have also welcomed 180 students into our Year 8 cohort. They began the year with some team building activities and
games run by Active Education which helped them get to know their peers. All of these students have now settled into their
classes and are learning to adapt to the demands of secondary schooling.
Our Year 9 students have also had a very good start to the year. Most elective class changes have been completed now
so students should all have their preferred subjects.
We have also welcomed Ms Stella Reid as our Year 7, 8 and 9 Year Level Coordinator. She will oversee students in these
Year Levels for the 2020 school year. MS Cheryl Raso is continuing in her role this Year as the Middle School Counsellor.
Just a few reminders around a couple of common issues at school:
Students bringing mobile phones to school do so at their own risk. Mobile phones are not to
be used during class time. They need to be kept out of site and if they are needed for any
reason, students must seek permission from their teacher. Students must also ensure that
they are not filming or taking photos of other students whilst on school grounds.
Our school uniform does not included hooded jumpers. We ask that parents support the
school by reminding their children not to wear these to school. Our uniform shop has a
number of alternatives that are available for purchase. Any parents with questions around
this need to speak to Stella Reid.

FRIENDLY SCHOOLS PLUS
Have you ever wondered; what makes a school a friendly school? How can my child feel connected
at school? Or maybe you have asked; what can be done to reduce bullying in a school?
The Friendly Schools Initiative addresses the social and emotional learning of young people and the
essential understandings and skill development to reduce bullying in schools. This is achieved
formally, through explicit classroom teaching and learning strategies, and informally through the development of a whole-
school culture and organisation.
Friendly Schools is a multi-component, evidence based, school initiative involving the whole-school community to build
social and emotional competency, create supportive learning environments and significantly reduce bullying in school
communities.
Friendly Schools draws on 20 years of research and uses a collaborative approach that engages all members of the school
community in building the school’s capacity to provide a friendly and supportive learning environment. It is recognised
nationally and internationally as a comprehensive, evidence-based approach that can reduce bullying behaviour.
Gawler & District College B-12 has the fantastic opportunity to be involved in the Friendly Schools Initiative which is being
implemented across 10 schools in the Greater Gawler Partnership. My name is Olga Vidoni and I am the coordinator for
Friendly Schools at Gawler &District College B-12. In addition to being a teacher I have been a school
counsellor, assistant principal and a co-principal. I have worked in many schools over my career,
including Smithfield Plains, Elizabeth Fields, Elizabeth Park and Hewett. I am now excited to be working
with the Gawler & District College community in 2020. If you see me at school please come up and say
hello, I would love to meet you.

SENIOR SCHOOL
It has been a busy start to the year across the Senior School. With various activities and guest speakers during the recent
Orientation Day, our students were provided with valuable opportunities to prepare for success. We would like to extend our
congratulations to our 2019 group of Year 12’s for everything they achieved and contributed during their time at Gawler
and District College. We would also like to welcome our new cohort of students to the Senior School.
Many key elements contribute towards making the senior years of high school a successful one, with the habits established
early carrying forward as the year progresses. Students who wish to succeed need to develop good work practices at
school. They need to be self-motivated, focussed and able to work independently. Parental support and correspondence is
highly important throughout the year. There will be many opportunities provided for students to extend themselves and
excel throughout the year. The school offers a variety of extra-curricular activities that focus on areas including leadership,
performing, sport, and personal development. We strongly encourage our students to get involved in these activities. If at
any time students have questions regarding the SACE or intended pathway they can make a time to see me so that we
can have a discussion. We look forward to another rewarding year with our Year 12 students.
On Tuesday 29 January our Year 12’s had their Orientation Day.
They participated in study skills and time management sessions
where our students were actively involved. Team building and
nutrition sessions were also a great part of the day helping
students to feel comfortable and prepared for the year. A
highlight during this Orientation Day was listening to our former
student presenters, Lachlan Wilson and Franke Agenbag, who
definitely inspired the Year 12 cohort.
The final session included SACE pattern checks and student
pathway preferences. Overall, the day was productive and a
positive start to the year.
