Term 1 Week 5 24th February 2016
The Newsletter is designed to offer an information service to the parents of Wedderburn College students and local people interested in Education.
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Families are reminded as part of the Victorian Government’s
drought assistance package, Wedderburn College students are
eligible for a drought assistance payment. A “one off”
amount of $375 per student is available to be used for
educational expenses for the direct benefit of your child.
This payment cannot be cashed if in credit by the end of the
year. It will be rolled over as a credit.
Nominations for School Council close today Wednesday
February 24th at 4.00pm. If there are more nominations than
vacancies an election will be held.
Over the Christmas break a number of maintenance and
building works occurred. Block A, the wing including the
science and wood technology rooms was repaired and painted
externally and now looks much more presentable with a fresh
coat of paint. The bike shed was relocated to the Chapel
Street entrance of the school and a number of maintenance
and garden tasks were undertaken by Nick Chalmers.
The construction of a shed to store archives, HPV, Hands on
Learning and other outdoor technical learning equipment was
completed on the old basketball court area and the Year 12
portable building was removed. In the coming days tanks will
be installed to catch the rain water from the shed (let’s hope we get plenty). The classrooms and corridor of Block A will
be painted in the Easter and July holidays and we hope to complete some landscaping around the shed with a mix of
active and quiet spaces for students.
The plans for the refurbishment of the office, staff and library areas we received funding for back in 2014 are moving
forward and we are hoping tenders might be called for in June or July. Watch this space.
It’s important to have a place to work and recreate that is safe, comfortable and conducive to learning. All of these
repairs and improvements help students and staff to feel proud of our workplace.
Assessment and Reporting
The first set of continuous reports including progress reports on student work habits will become available to parents and
students over the coming week. Parents and students can access these reports on Compass management system.
The reports will involve feedback and feed forward on how your child is progressing in each of their classes. I would
encourage parents and students to read these reports as they give a focus for your child’s learning and how they can
make further progress.
The progress reports will become live on Monday 29th February. Progress reports give parents feedback on their child’s
work habits.
Continuous reports were introduced to the College last year to give more timely feedback to parents and students on
learning progress.

SCHOOL FOR STUDENT LEADERSHIP UPDATE Our intrepid travellers at Gnurad-Gundidj for the School of Student Leadership took off and successfully completed one
of their big “expos” (Expedition) recently. All reports are that they are having a great time. What an amazing
opportunity for our students.
Richard Dougall, Year 7-10 Neighbourhood Leader
YEAR 11-12 NEIGHBOURHOOD NEWS
Our Year 11 and 12 students have certainly been busy this past week. After a few weeks of organisation and orientation,
classes have hit the ground running and assessments are beginning to take place. Please make sure that you log onto
Compass and check with your student to ensure they have completed and submitted all required learning tasks.
Our VCAL students had a magnificent few days in Ocean Grove last week, spending three days together bonding and
setting goals for the year ahead. Everyone had a fantastic trip, with their visit to The Gordon Institute being a particular
highlight. I would like to extend a big thank you to Mr Mark Gretgrix, Mrs Carolyn Stewart and Ms Annette Mcnamara
who accompanied our students for the duration of their trip.
Our Year 12 students will attend a safe driving program run by Vic Roads this week, which focuses on safe driving,
legislation and being a responsible friend. This timely, important presentation is a fantastic opportunity to reflect on our
responsibilities behind the wheel and make sure that we “look after our mates”.
All Year 11 and 12 students should have touched base with their Advocate teacher by this stage of the term. If you
haven’t had a meeting, please make sure to arrange one as soon as possible. Remember, Advocates are able to support
you with organisation, study skills, time management and a whole range of other things. An official Advocate lunch will
be held next Monday, the 29th of February in the KLC foyer – we look forward to seeing you all then.

personal networks among their co-participants.
NSYF’s goal is for students gain the knowledge, skills and perspectives that enable students to make informed choices
about future study and career options.
If you think you may be interested in applying for this great opportunity please speak with Mrs Barker or Ms Gurm.

presented by all nominees, all of which should be congratulated for putting their hand up to be part of the important role
that the SRC plays within our College.
The SRC will be presented with their badges at our school assembly on the 22nd of Feb. Our new SRC reps are advised

CHAPLAIN’S CHAT
This week the team of “Change It Up” students will meet with Loddon Shire Representatives to discuss their plans of
how to make Wedderburn more attractive and welcoming to those people who are just passing through the town or who
are looking for a place to stay. These students have some great ideas which will enhance the attractiveness of our town.
Change It Up Victorian Mallee District is a partnership between The Foundation for Young Australians (FYA),
Victorian Government Office for Youth and various shires in the region. The project sparks young people’s ideas for
change within their communities. This happens in three stages.
Organising- Establishing local host teams. (Loddon Shire)
Exploring- Last year we travelled to Kerang for a two day workshop with other teams to develop and launch
ideas for change.
Connecting- Backing young people’s ideas by connecting them to community resources and FYA opportunities.
This is the stage we are in now.
We will keep you updated on this developing project.

canteen.
On Friday afternoon students even had some time to collect some of the recycling bins that needed to be emptied.

YEAR 9/10 HORTICULTURAL CLASS Mr Hocking's Year 9/10 class also accompanied by the school chaplain Graham Veal, have made great progress in the
last week on the Aquaponic Project. Even though this was on the list to be finished by the end of 2015, students
have had a lot more confidence in themselves this year to try new aspects of learning in the way of building and to think
outside the box so to speak.
New students to this year's Horticulture Elective have also shown leadership in not only working on the specific project
but are also happy to put their hand up and show leadership in looking at and getting other jobs in the garden
area accomplished. I appreciate how the whole class can work together at whatever is asked of them.
Trina Vaughan, Garden Coordinator.

SCHOOL ASTHMA SPIKE
Every year there is a well-documented rise in asthma flare-ups and hospitalisations when students return to school after
the holiday break. Asthma Australia has information for parents of students with asthma . Asthma Australia’s website
and social media provide the latest information, including a checklist of what to do to help your child and a survey to
complete to determine the impacts for parents/carers.
Asthma Australia recommends that you talk to school staff about your child’s asthma and the school’s medication
policy, provide an Asthma Plan from the doctor and supply a spare reliever puffer and spacer for your child’s use at
school.
(Thanks to those who have already attended to this.)
………………..They’re Back ………………... Dear Parents/Guardians/Carers,
It has come to our attention that some students in the school may have head lice and I seek your cooperation in check-
ing your child’s hair this week.
Year P-6 will take place at school on Tuesday 23rd February 2016.
Head lice do not transmit infectious diseases – they are transmitted by having head to head contact with someone who
has head lice. You may be reassured to know that head lice are commonly found in places other than at Wedderburn.
Head lice are common in school-aged children and are the most adaptable of creatures. They have survived living sole-
ly on humans for 10,000 years!!!!
What can you do?
I seek your cooperation in checking your child’s hair and, in those instances where head lice or eggs are found, treating
your child’s hair.
How do I treat my child for head lice?
The attached pamphlet has informative guidelines regarding detecting and treating head lice and eggs.
If head lice or eggs are found on your child’s hair you need to inform:
-the school and advise when the treatment has started.
-parents or carers of your child’s friends so they too have the opportunity to detect and treat their children if necessary.
When can my child return to school?
Health regulations requires that where a child has head lice, that child should not return to school until the day after
appropriate treatment has started. Please note, this refers only to those children who have live head lice and does not
refer to head lice eggs.
Wedderburn College is aware that head lice can be a sensitive issue and is committed to maintaining your confidential-
ity.
Yours sincerely
