(Values, Individuality, Excellence, Worth, Sustainability Principal’s Pen Last week in the newsletter I spoke about student behaviour and the expectations we have at Caravonica. I also spoke about our responses when student behavioural choices are not acceptable. This week I want to focus on what to do if you have a concern about behaviour at our school. We want you to advocate on behalf of your child if you feel that another student’s behaviour is affecting them – as parents you are their strongest advocate and voice. Here is the process to use: 1. In the first instance your concerns need to be brought to the attention of your child’s class teacher – through a phone call, email, face to face discussion or a hand written note. Your child’s teacher will then follow up your concerns and let you know what the outcome of their investigations are. 2. Should the concerning behaviour continue then administration should be notified – as all ongoing and persistent misbehaviour needs to be referred to the office. Whilst it may seem really easy to just take matters in to your own hands and address the child [or parent] directly yourself, this is not appropriate nor acceptable and this conduct is threatening to students – even if that is not your intent. Should you choose this course of action administration will follow up with you – just as you would not want another parent approaching your child and that choice not addressed by the school. As Principal I manage the behaviour of all persons who enter the school site – not just the students. It is essential you advocate on behalf of your child with the staff of the school – we are always available and more than happy to listen and help! Student behaviour is very important to us – and we acknowledge that with 544 students on site issues will arise that need to be investigated, consequences imposed and the teaching of appropriate behaviour readdressed. Keeping students safe and managing the learning environment so it is calm and orderly, is one of our highest priorities. For most classes across the school, tomorrow is our Parent / Teacher Interview afternoon/ evening. This meeting is very worthwhile as it allows you to see how your child is travelling and what the next step in their learning is. Teachers really value this time with you and see the importance of sharing your child’s learning journey. When you meet with your child/ren’s class teacher remember that academics, effort, behaviour and attendance are very important to us - as they are to you! Teachers will discuss with you where your child ‘sits’ in terms of the benchmark expectation of the teaching and learning program at our school – the ‘C’ standard. However research also stands behind all that we do and the research has shown that children are capable of achieving more than the benchmark and that, for example, in reading our higher expectations of where they need to be for each year level actually sets our children up for academic success. And academic success is so important to us! So in these discussions the focus will be on our school expectations alongside the national minimum or benchmark expectations, especially in reading – a big focus area for our school. Please remember that P-1 interviews are now in the staffroom – just to help with congestion. We look forward to seeing you! Road safety continues to be a big issue for our school community and as such we need to be ever vigilant about making sure that as adults we all obey the road rules around how we park and collect the children from the school. Last week I was on ‘lollipop’ duty and saw some very concerning driving/parking behaviour. Double parking is very dangerous as it means that our children are weaving though parked vehicles. The area outside of Prep A has designated parking yet some parents choose to double park and have their child run through parked cars to be picked up. I also saw an impromptu stop-drop-go in the bus zone near the lights and again this is a very dangerous habit – where you are deliberately choosing to put your child’s life at risk. Please keep our children safe by modelling safe driving and parking at all times. If everyone is complying with the road rules this will ease the level of frustration for everyone. Principal’s Pen Last week in the newsletter I spoke about student behaviour and the expectations we have at Caravonica. I also spoke about our responses when

ATTENDANCE CUP Full Attendance: For a child to have full attendance she/he must be at school for a full day 9-3. This term I will review the achievement by identifying the class with the best full attendance across a week from Thursday to Wednesday. Best Full Class Attendance: Week ending 9th March 2018. Best full class attendance for Juniors is 2C with 98.4% of children here every day between 9-3 and for Seniors is 65B with 98.4%. CARAVONICA CHOIR NOTICES Our choirs are enjoying learning new songs with Mr Clarke including “Catch a Falling Star”, “Put a Little Love in Your Heart”, “Edelweiss”, “This is Me” from the movie The Greatest Showman (seniors) and “How Much is that Doggie in the Window” (juniors!) Senior Choir (year 4 – 6) The cut off for registration and audition for the Senior Choir was Friday 9th March. If your child is still interested please have them make contact with Mr Clarke to arrange an audition time, either at school or you can email. Some students have not been attending choir rehearsal regularly so their name will be removed from the choir roll if they do not attend this week. The senior choir is planning a series of performances including at the Cairns Junior Eisteddfod in June and a Choir Camp in Term 2. More information to come. 6A and I went to a beautiful beach called Holloways where there’s a wonderful environmental centre HBEEC. At HBEEC we worked on pushing ourselves and challenging ourselves on high ropes. We also worked on our team building and co-operation. As I was challenging myself I felt really nervous and excited. My stomach felt like it had a lot of butterflies in it. The team building was really fun, and felt great when we were caring for each other.

UNSW ICAS Tests ICAS is an independent, skills-based assessment program which recognises and rewards student achievement. ICAS is unique, being the most comprehensive generally available suite of academic assessments for primary and secondary school students. Parents wishing to nominate their child for the ICAS competition should do so in a clearly marked envelope containing the registration fees per competition entered. Each envelope should contain the following details: Full name of child, school year level and competition/s entered. We are looking for students who are interested in representing Caravonica State School at the Barron River Cross Country Competition. As a result Mr O’Keefe will be hosting training for the Cross Country on the oval at 8:30am every Wednesday and Friday (term time) up until the event. Training has commenced and will continue right up until the 25th of April two days before the event. Note that there are only a limited number of spots available for each division and as a result trials will be held at 8:30 am on the 21st of March to select the fastest students. Please be aware that committing to joining the Caravonica Cross country team includes a commitment to turn up to the trainings before the event.

On Monday 5th March, class 6A went on a full day excursion to Holloways Beach Environmental Education Centre to experience high Ropes, and obstacle course, and build relationships with our peers. My favourite part of the whole day was when I did the high ropes course. It was extremely challenging, but I managed to push myself past my comfort zone. When I was in the middle of one of the high ropes, I felt I wanted to give up, but my fellow peers cheered me on, so I could complete it. In the afternoon we did team building activities, so we could learn to communicate with each other. We had extremely hard challenges like when we had to race on ‘sleds’. My team lost, but that was OK. Overall, I believe that this excursion was the best one I have ever been on.
