At Wideview Public School our students learn about the history of Aboriginal people, the impact of government pol- icies and decisions on their families and culture and how we can all work together in understanding our history and creang a united fu- ture, in which we understand, value and respect each other. Acknowledgement of Country (hps:// www.commonground.org.au/learn/acknowledgement-of-country) An ‘Acknowledgement of Country’ is an opportunity to acknowledge, and pay re- spect, to the Tradional Owners and ongoing custodians of the land - the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Acknowledgements are oſten made at the com- mencement of an event, such as a meeng, speech or formal occasion. An acknowl- edgement can be made by anybody, Indigenous or non-Indigenous. Why is it important? Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have experienced significant exclusion from Australian society for many years. Further, many non-Indigenous Australians have not had the opportunity to learn about, and celebrate, the rich cultures of Abo- riginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This contributes to a disparity between Abo- riginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous Australians that persists today. Acknowledging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in events is one part of ending this exclusion. It recognises the place of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the first custodians of this land and, importantly, promotes awareness of the history and culture of Indigenous people. This increased awareness will help us create a more united Australia that celebrates and embraces our First Australians. School Rules A very important school rule is no children in classrooms without a teacher. This is to offset the me it may take before assistance can be rendered if an accident should occur. Parents taking their child into the classroom before or aſter school when a teacher isn’t present is giving the child mixed messages. The child is seeing that they don’t have to follow rules when they are with parents and unfortunately will some- mes access rooms without teacher knowledge at other mes to get their “things”. Yes the parent can render assistance should something happen but the teacher is trained in CPR, Anaphylaxis, Asthma, Diabetes and Emergency Care. The classroom is the teachers work space and at mes observaonal notes, assessments and reports could be accessible. Parents greatly affect their children's behaviour. Children are like sponges--they mod- el everything a parent does and incorporates what they see into their own lives. It is important that parents set the right examples for their children. Please don’t take your child into classrooms without first asking the teacher

The NSW theme for National Reconciliation Week is ldquoGrounded in Truth - Walk Together with Couragerdquo This week is a time for all Aus-tralians to learn about our shared histories cultures and achieve-ments and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving rec-onciliation in Australia At Wideview Public School our students learn about the history of Aboriginal people the impact of government pol-icies and decisions on their families and culture and how we can all work together in understanding our history and creating a united fu-ture in which we understand value and respect each other Acknowledgement of Country (https

Sickness We understand it can be difficult when deciding whether to send your child to school when they are unwell As winter approaches we ask parents to keep children at home if they are sick Over the past week our sick bay has been full of students and our office administration area required for the overflow of students waiting to be picked up to go home We appreciate our students love of being at school however at home is the best place when you are sick It is imperative that we have your current contact numbers and your emergen-cy contacts are aware they are listed It is not uncommon for the office to make several phone calls before making contact with a family member The following information from the NSW Department of Health may assist you when deciding how long your child should stay away from school Stay at home if sick Keep sick children away from school and other activities Wait at least 24 hours after fever resolves so that you are unlikely to infect other people This is especially important if you visit people who are more likely to get really sick if they get the flu - including pregnant women infants older people or people in hospital or residential aged care Similarly if you think you may have influenza and you need to see a doctor call ahead so the clinic can take precautions to reduce the risk to other people

Holiday Exemption Form

A reminder that if you are planning to take holidays throughout the school term parents need to complete

an application form for extended leave which can be obtained from the school office The form does request

supporting documentation and needs to be submitted at least one week prior to the date of travel If leave is

approved then days absent do still get marked as whole day absences but recorded as justified leave

It is important for students to attend school every school day as this can have an impact on their learning

Some interesting facts regarding absences and lateness to school

Did you knowhelliphellip

If your child is regularly late they miss huge amounts of learning time lateness has the same impact as

absenteeism

There is a direct correlation between attendance and achievement

Frequent absences make it difficult for teachers who have to continually re-teach information skills

Being 15 minutes late to school twice a week equals to missing 5 hours a term and 20 hours a year of

missed schooling

Patterns of attendanceabsence are set up in the early years of schooling

Being absent five days a term from Kindergarten to Year 10 adds up to more than one year of missed

schooling

Poor attendance makes it difficult for students to form positive relationships with their peers

inviting spaces for the children to read share and relax

dren to change the space quickly and easily depending on their needs

We want all our students to love using the library and its resources Providing dynamic and friendly spaces

for children to gather discuss ideas and explore their favourite books is an important element in developing

their love of reading and learning

need lots of help

We all know it is very important to spend some time with your kids on the day and we know too that par-

between you and your husbandwife one could do a shift on the stall and one on general duties

in the School Banking Program or you would like further information please collect an information booklet
