On Wednesday evening we had two equally wonderful things happening in different parts of the city. At Sydney Town Hall Year 12 Prefect Daniel Lahood was awarded a Public Education Foundation scholarship. These scholarships are highly competitive and very prestigious. Besides receiving the award Daniel was also asked by the foundation to give the student address as he is the 1000th recipient of an award. Daniel did a marvellous job of the address in front of an audience of several thousand people, the Minister of Education and a long list of dignitaries. The speech focused on the “world class” education and exceptional leadership opportunities that he has enjoyed at ABHS. I have included the Public Education Foundation press release for your information as it references Daniel’s speech.

Across town at PLC the Senior TheatreSports Team competed again in the Impro Australia competition. The team, Francesco Buda, Vincent Li, Wesley Stewart and Oliver Bauer, ended up coming equal second by only one point. They are now one of four teams to progress to the next round. As in previous years, we are the only public school to progress. This achievement is even more impressive when the composition of the team is considered. The Senior competition is for Years 11 and 12 – Wesley is in Year 10 and Oliver is in Year 9. Well done guys! The Intermediate team will compete next Wednesday and we are hosting the event. If you are around come along -the competition is always lots of fun.

MEDIA RELEASE 15 May 2019 Celebrating Achievements in Public Education: 1000th Scholar Recognised This evening the Public Education Foundation (PEF) will celebrate the achievements of students, teachers and principals in public schools across Australia at the Annual Proudly Public Awards Ceremony at Sydney Town Hall. Since the inception of PEF’s scholarships program 10 years ago, over 1,000 students have been supported with life‐changing scholarships. At the 2019 Proudly Public Awards Ceremony we will recognise our 1000th scholar, Daniel Lahood from Ashfield Boys High. Daniel is a recipient of the 2019 Union NSW Jeff Shaw Memorial Scholarship. “When I reflect on the life of The Hon Jeff Shaw, it is an inspiration to me as I feel we both represent very similar values, especially as staunch defenders and advocates for public education in NSW,” Daniel Lahood said. “The opportunities I have been given at Ashfield Boys High School to assist me in following my dream career paths of law and politics is more than I have ever could have asked for.” This year PEF will have disbursed over $3 million in scholarship funding, with over 180 new scholarships awarded this year. With the support of generous donors and partners, each year the scholarship program has expanded to meet the educational needs of students facing disadvantage and to recognise excellence in our public schools. The Secretary of the Department of Education, Mark Scott, thanked the Public Education Foundation for its ongoing support of public education in NSW. “These scholarships are about recognising and rewarding student excellence to encourage high‐achieving students to continue to maximise their potential,” Mr Scott said. “I congratulate our students, teachers and leaders who have won scholarships ‐ it is their efforts that combine to create the extraordinary public education system we have in NSW.” David Hetherington, PEF executive director, said the awards were about celebrating “enduring values of our public education system, a system that provides the greatest of all opportunities for young people to succeed in life”. “It has been an enormous privilege to work with so many inspiring students and educators who recognise the transformational power of education,” Mr Hetherington said. The Awards Program and a full list of 2019 Scholarship Recipients can be found here. The Public Education Foundation works in collaboration with the schools, communities, business and both the state and federal governments to provide equity and excellence scholarships for students and educators in public education. We would like to thank our premium partners whose support allows us to host this event each year and award increasing numbers of scholarships: NSW Teachers Federation, Teachers Health, First State Super and Teachers Mutual Bank. DOTS LOTS OF FUN
Students of 7 Da Vinci had fun learning fractions using Dominoes. Dominoes are a perfect hands-on learning experience because they are already in fraction format. Students picked random Dominoes and arranged these in order from least to greatest common denominators to compare fractions. Students also made equivalent fractions and mixed numbers from the improper fractions.

SCIENCE UPDATE
Ms C Osborn - Relieving Head Teacher Science
Mr A Ahearne
Science has started with a bang for Year 8 students who are studying Chemistry this term. Students have been investigating properties of elements, compounds and molecules and performed a number of chemical reactions including the hydrogen "pop test" and burning of magnesium.
Year 11 Chemistry students have looked at the more complex reactions including the decomposition of sodium hydrogen carbonate and performing quantitative mole calculations.

ASHTAG WEEK 3: ETCHED CONTOUR LINE PORTRAITS
Year 9 has been experiencing
many new media this year.
This term we have been
exploring how artists use line
in their work. We have
investigated the etchings of
Lucien Freud and the
continuous line sculptures of
Alexander Calder. The boys
have had to investigate new
ways of representation using
one line to infer meaning and
emotion in their work. They
have had to learn how to
prepare and etch their
drawings onto a Perspex
plate. They have explored the
very strict process of printing their work and Editioning their prints. We are now about to start our
Alexander Calder Sculptures. Firstly, redrawing our designs onto A3 paper and scaling up. We will
then use wire to follow the lines of our drawings. We are really looking forward to seeing how these
works evolve.

Working in groups of three Year 9 Engineering students had to build a tower from balsa wood. The goal of this challenge project is to design the lightest, strongest tower out of balsa wood crossbeams. These towers will be loaded with weight until they fail (e.g. break). The tower that has the highest load to weight ratio (load before failing divided by the weight of the tower) wins!
