Term 2 Week 3 Tuesday 10 May 2016 THE PURPOSE OF OUR SCHOOL To ensure that our students develop their intellectual, social, physical and creative abilities so that they achieve their individual potential and be prepared for the responsibilities of life. Welcome to All Dear Parents/Guardians SWIMMING LESSON (mainstream classes) students will have the opportunity to participate in swimming lessons at the Thornlie pool commencing next week. Details have been sent home to all parents. Medical notes and permission notes with pool entry fees are due now. NAPLAN 2016 - Year 3 & 5 students will complete the annual NAPLAN assessments this week. The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual national assessment of all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. All students are expected to participate in the testing. They will be assessed in language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation), writing, reading and numeracy. If parents have any concerns or questions regarding NAPLAN please contact the class teacher or front office. FOOTY COLOURS DAY - Year 6 Camp Fundraising – Term 2 Thornlie Primary P&C Association and the Year 6 students are coordinating two final fundraising events in Term 2 for the Year 6 Camp. The aim is to reduce the camp cost for students. The next fundraising event will be a ―Footy Colours Day‖ on Friday May 13 th . Students can come dressed in their favourite sporting team’s colours and may choose to bring along a gold coin donation for the Year 6 Camp. NEXT SCHOOL ASSEMBLY – will be held on Wednesday May 18 th at 2pm in the covered assembly area, hosted by the Student Councillors. SCHOOL VANDALISM – Last weekend our school was vandalised with many broken windows and damage to property. I would ask all parents and community members to ring either School Watch Security: 1800 177 777 or Police: 131 444 STUDENT PROGRESS – During Term 2 classroom teachers may request a meeting to discuss your child’s academic program and needs for the year. I would also remind all parents/carers that they can contact the school at any time to request a meeting with their child’s teacher should they have a query or concern. We request that these are walked through the grounds for everyone’s safety. Use of staff the car park and verge is strictly prohibited in the interests of the health and safety of our students. We ask that you support us in abiding by these simple rules to help us keep your children safe. I would also remind parents and carers to use the paths and not walk children through the car park areas before and after school. Thank you for your ongoing supporting and cooperation. MAINSTREAM SWIMMING LESSONS COMMENCE NEXT WEEK

Interm Swimming Lessons for our Pre Primary to Year 6 students will commence next Monday 16 May 2016. There will be 10 daily lessons concluding on Friday 27 May 2016. All students will need bathers, towel, extra t-shirt and thongs to wear to and from the pool. School uniform and closed in shoes are necessary for the remainder of the day. Please return the Permission and Medical form along with money as soon as possible so your child is able to participate.

The first round of fixtures for Eagles/Feva Cup 2016 will commence next Friday 20 May against Cannington Community College. We encourage parents to come and cheer on our teams. Games will commence at 1.15pm and finish at 2.15pm. Congratulations to all students selected. A reminder to parents that money and permission forms must be brought to school asap. It was a delight to see our students taking so much care to choose just the right gift to give for Mother’s Day. A huge thank you to all the ladies in the P&C who work tirelessly to enable services such as these to take place. Thank you to our school community for again supporting our fundraising efforts. Over $800 was raised for our school! Massive effort.

Enrolments are now open for the 2017 Academic year. Thornlie Primary School caters for Kindergarten students through to Year 6. We invite you to visit our school to see our facilities and are happy to answer any questions you may have.

Pre Primary

Years 1-6 Applications for Kindergarten and Pre Primary must be received by Friday 22 July 2016. Please submit the following documents with your Application:

Your child’s Birth Certificate (telephone the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages on 1300 305 021 if you do not have one).

Your child’s Immunisation Records (telephone the Australian Immunisation Register on 1800 653 809 if you need details).

If your child is currently attending Kindergarten at Thornlie Primary School they will now be automatically enrolled to attend Pre-Primary with us next year and further action is not required. However to assist us with successful future planning, please inform the school if you do not require a position with us in 2017.

RAINBOWS will be starting again this term. RAINBOWS offers children from families suffering grief through a major loss experience the opportunity to meet in a weekly support group over a period of 12 weeks. The programme is free and will be held during school hours in the Cultural Room.
