Principal’s Report

Last week all staff approached Week 3 of the term with great excitement as we embraced Phase 1 of the Department of Education’s Managed Return to School Strategy. This phase saw all students onsite two days per week engaging in face-to-face learning. The opportunity to see students that we haven’t seen for some time was a thrilling prospect. It was also great to see students excited to see their friends after a considerable time apart. This week, learning continues with students onsite Monday and Wednesday, with remote learning Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Throughout this week as you engage in Google Classroom you will observe teachers slowly winding down uploading more learning in readiness for Phase 2 next week. With students onsite three days next week the distribution of work will slightly change. As we transition to this phase it is important to return loaned devices. Having students onsite three days next week and the use of Google Classroom slowly winding down, laptops at home are not essential. Jeremy Campbell Principal

Drop off and pick up procedures

Please be reminded that the procedures provided by the Department of Education advise schools to keep adults on site to a minimum. I request that parents only come onto the school site for essential reasons. If you need to speak with the school office or a teacher please phone or email the school office. When dropping off or picking your child up from school, please just drop off at the gate and meet your child at the gate at the end of the day. This will support having less adults within the school and will allow social distancing between adults to be adhered to. We appreciate your ongoing support.

Return to School - Phase 2

Commencing next Monday, 25th May we will transition to Phase 2 of the planned return to school. Students will attend school on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. On these days’ students will engage in face-to-face learning delivered by their classroom teacher.

During Phase 2, on remote learning days (Thursday and Friday), students will engage in learning set by their classroom teacher. As we transition to Phase 2 teachers will be limiting their online program as they focus on programming structured lessons in the classroom with students onsite the majority of the week. The plan will be different for each class, even so, learning will be given to all students at the end of their school day on Wednesday. This learning needs to be completed on remote learning days, which is then returned to their classroom teacher on their next scheduled day at school. Simply put, teachers will teach face-to-face learning Monday-Wednesday and each Wednesday provide learning for students to complete on remote learning days (Thursday and Friday).

Cold Weather and Uniform

As the cold weather approaches, we have noticed lots of jumpers and jackets being left at school in the playground at the end of the day. Many of these items do not have names in them. Please check that clothing is clearly labelled and remind your children to collect their clothing at the end of each day.

We appreciate that the vast majority of families go to great lengths to ensure your children are in uniform. It contributes to the great reputation of the school with students wearing a uniform with pride. Your support in this area is much appreciated.

Staffing Update

As outlined in the last newsletter, to date, we have been unable to secure a teacher to maintain 3 classrooms. Being the leader at Boree Creek PS I am in a privileged position because l lead staff who individually place high expectations on themselves. We will continue to pursue a high calibre classroom teacher whilst simultaneously considering contingency plans. As a staff we have had a number of conversations around possible outcomes to the current situation. Rest assured that the decisions made over the coming weeks are student centred, focused on our belief that all students deserve excellence.

School Upgrades

In our relentless pursuit of excellence, we work diligently as a school at constant improvement. This extends to looking at the physical site and how it can be better managed to improve learning experiences.

Last week, l was in consultation with school infrastructure about turning the STEM shed into an intervention room/library. I can excitingly share that this upgrade has been signed off with the works being planned for completion. This will be an exciting addition to our school and a wonderful space to support and foster more individualised supports for our students.

Teacher staff-room

Our library store room transitioning to a staff room is now completed. Take a look at this wonderful vibrant space now.

Following any absence parents/caregivers must ensure that within 7 days you provide a verbal or written explanation for the absence. The preference for this is to call Wendy Patey in the front office who will record attendance records directly onto our online platform.

Family Referral Services

The Riverina Murray Family Referral Service (FRS) is your link to support.

Amanda (FRS Family Worker) is now situated at Boree Creek Public School every month on a Tuesday, starting the 25/02/2020 - during school hours to help both students and their families link with a variety of services they may need throughout the year. Amanda can provide information and access to a number of support services including;

Housing and Accommodation Counselling & Mediation Financial Assistance Mental Health Support Parenting Support Cultural Support Drug and Alcohol Support Education Health Suggestions Youth Support Relationship advice External activities e.g. sports Domestic violence support and advice and much

more…… If you would like to chat to Amanda please contact her on 0429 550 047 to arrange an appointment.

Alternatively you can also call the FRS on 1300 307 897 5 days a week or visit the FRS office at 36-40 Gurwood Street Wagga Wagga.

Semester One Reports

Under the Department’s curriculum planning and programming, assessing and reporting to parents K-12 policy, we are required to provide parents/carers, with formal and informal opportunities to receive information about and discuss their child's learning. As you would probably expect, due to the COVID-19 pandemic Semester One reports will be slightly different.

Festival of Instrumental Music

Last week it was decided that the Festival of Instrumental Music for the 2020 school year be cancelled. Although this is disappointing for all involved, it would have been difficult to maintain a level of excellence with reduced teaching time due to the COVID restrictions. With everything there is always a positive to be taken, in this case, we will be better positioned for Festival of Instrumental Music in 2021 with the some of the chosen songs from this year’s festival being used next year.

Student Attendance

Continuing this year is a focus on improving student attendance. As a school our attendance is slightly below the DoE state average and we are aiming to improve this. Did you know…….

As we transition back to face-to-face learning re-establishing household routines that encourage school attendance is paramount. No doubt there are some reluctant students who may want to stay home, however, can l encourage you to make attendance a high priority. Our school is safe and we are doing everything possible to ensure it stays that way.

In saying that, on occasion, your child may need to be absent from school. Justified reasons for student absences may include:

being sick, or having an infectious disease having an unavoidable medical appointment being required to attend a recognised religious

holiday exceptional or urgent family circumstance (e.g.

attending a funeral).

For Semester One only Principals have the flexibility to modify reports based on adjustments to learning during the COVID pandemic. Boree Creek PS won’t be using the five-point A-E scale this semester. Also, Semester One reports are usually sent home by the end of Term 2, however there has been an extension meaning reports won’t be sent home until early Term 3.

Even so, the report will provide a summative account of student progress and achievement on learning covered during Semester One, at school and at home, with information about what might need to be done to support their child’s learning growth.

If you would like any clarification of the changes feel free to call the office to speak with the Principal.

School Values

Over the last few weeks as a teaching staff we have been considering our school values. During a number of staff meetings we have been reflecting on our students and the current ways that are we embedding processes that strengthens all students as both learners and individuals. As the Principal my intention in re-looking at the school’s values is important and deliberate. For me, our school values are not a static document never referred to. Rather, our school values are embedding into everything that we do at Boree Creek PS. Considering this we wanted to open a conversation with parents around our school values by way of a survey. This consultation will ensure that the school values reflect characteristic that not only we as teacher wish to foster, but also families at home can engage in with enthusiasm. Can I encourage all families to respond to the survey and have your say in shaping our wonderful school. A link will be emailed to all households or you can access the survey by using the QR code below.

QR Code: We will publish more information regarding this in future editions of the newsletter. Alternatively, I will be presenting some of what teaching staff have been discussing in a proposed Zoom meeting in the coming weeks.

Updating Information at the school

Whilst we do our utmost to maintain current records, you can make our job much easier by providing us with new information as it becomes available. This could include new reports from doctors, paediatricians, court orders and any other relevant information to help us best support your child. We treat your information with confidentiality, and only use it to better support your children. Without this important information, we can’t take it into account. For example, if your child has an allergy and you don’t communicate that, we can’t make adjustments to best cater for them. We can’t follow medical or legal advice that is communicated via children.

Scripture Lessons

Face-to-face Special Religious Education (SRE) will not be available until all schools resume normal operations (Phase 4). This means until we move back to full time face-to-face learning Trish Polhill won’t be able to run the usual weekly scripture lesson. An agreement has been reached with approved providers that materials for student use will be provided through an online portal.
