Term 2 Week 8 Principal’s Message Dear Parents, Congratulations to all of our students who performed in Star Struck last week. It was a spectacular show and our students were heavily involved including dance, choir and solo performances. Being part of the show is a wonderful experience for the students and the memories will last a lifetime. Congratulations also to our school aerobics teams who travelled to Sydney over the weekend to compete in the State Titles. We had some great performances and excellent results. A special thank you must go to the parents for their support with transport, costuming etc, and to the teachers who give up so much of their own time on a regular basis to support the students and enable them to enjoy these special experiences. Parent Online Payments Our Parent Online Payment system is up and running and we have been receiving a steady stream of payments through the system. I am sure the parents who have used it have found it quite simple to use and more efficient as it eliminates the need to make the trip in and pay for school related expenses at the office. Information about the system was sent home last week, but is also available on the school website or from the school office. Kindergarten 2015 2015 seems a long way off, however preparations are already underway to welcome another group of students into kindergarten next year. To assist our planning it is important that we have a clear understanding of how many students will be enrolling. Each year we receive many non-local applications for entry to our school and we cannot begin to process these applications until we have an indication of the number of local enrolments we will have. Therefore we ask that if you have a child who will be commencing kindergarten at our school next year please let us know as soon as possible. If you know of a family who does not already have a child at Floraville (so may not see the newsletters) and who have a child who is ready for kindergarten next year please ask them to contact us as well. Thank you D. Robson Principal Thought for the Week You will find yourself refreshed by the presence of cheerful people. Why not make earnest effort to confer that pleasure on others? Half the battle is gained if you never allow yourself to say anything gloomy. ~Lydia M. Child

VIRTUES EDUCATION This week’s virtue is ORDERLINESS:

Orderliness is being neat and living with a sense of harmony. You are organised, and you know where things are when you need them. Solve problems step by step instead of going in circles. Order around you creates order inside you. It gives you peace of mind.

    Sport Sport News Friday Sport

Netball, Soccer and Rugby League will still be playing the last day of school Friday 27th June.

Athletics Carnival As mentioned in last week’s brief, our years 3-6 Athletics Carnival was held at the Glendale Sports Centre and was an outstanding success! This Friday at the primary assembly, there will be a presentation of ribbons and medals at 10:20am in the hall. Stay tuned for your Zone Athletics Notes to come home soon if you made it into the Zone team. The zone team list is on the sports notice board near the canteen.

  • Craig Stevens Craig will be giving a presentation to our school this Thursday at 2:00pm in the hall. Craig is an ambassador for the Premier Sporting Challenge that we participate in each year. This is the first time we have had an ambassador come to Floraville and we are all very excited to hear Craig talk about setting goals, living an active lifestyle and healthy eating. Please bring back your Craig’s presentation note to your teacher so that you can have your photo taken with him. If a student does not bring in their note, they will still be able to attend the presentation. They just will not be photographed. Gymnastics Next week is our last week of gymnastics as part of the Sports in Schools program. It has been a brilliant program and students have enjoyed jumping, rolling, landing and balancing over the past term. Netball Gala Day We wish all of the students participating in the Mixed Netball Gala Day at the Charlestown netball courts today all the best. This is a great opportunity for both boys and girls to learn to play netball. Go Floraville! Aerobics Congratulations to our four fantastic aerobics teams who competed in Sydney on the weekend at the State Championships. All teams gave it their best and we are extremely proud of their efforts. The Night Rockers came 4th in their category, the Diamond Divas came 2nd, Sistematic came 2nd and are moving forward to the National Championships, and Four-Ocious came 1st and are also moving forward to the National Championships in August. Great Effort!

For details or to enter reading records online either google 'NSW Premier's Reading Challenge' or use the following website https://products.schools.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me directly via email [email protected] Lexile Legend Congratulations to this week's Lexile Legend, Robbie Nolan of 4/5W. Keep on reading Robbie. Parliament News There are an estimated 21 million mobile phones in Australia or about one for every person in this country. With the average person replacing their mobile phones every 12-24 months there are millions of old mobile phones that are left unused or are discarded to landfill. There is a risk people may develop health problems when exposed to these toxins. They include respiratory ailments, developmental and nervous system problems. It is essential that these millions of unwanted phones do not end up in landfill. We are conducting a campaign to collect old mobile phones and accessories so they may be recycled. Please bring your unwanted mobile phones to school on Wednesday 18th of June or Thursday 19th of June for collection by our year 6 Parliamentarians. They will be located under the COLA at 1.30pm each day. NAIDOC WEEK CELEBRATIONS AT FLORAVILLE PUBLIC SCHOOL

Every year, Australians celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait culture through NAIDOC celebrations all around the country. As NAIDOC Week occurs in the school holidays, Floraville P.S will celebrate NAIDOC Week with cultural

    activities on Thursday 17th

We are asking for assistance from any Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Community members by ‘adopting a class’ to assist with cultural sharing opportunities on the day. Please contact Mrs Hadden through the office if you can help!

    Groups will be based on a student’s interest AND their age-group ie: K – 2 or 3 – 6 options.

    STARSTRUCK 2014 SADLY ENDS

33 students in total were involved in Starstruck 2014. These students showed the people of the Newcastle/Hunter Region the quality of performing arts talent at Floraville School in a variety of genres. 16 students danced their hearts out performing to ‘Wouldn’t It Be Nice’ and ‘Xanadu’ whilst another 16 students joined a 400 person mass choir showcasing their melodic voices. Travis Richmond was also a featured vocalist in a number of songs again this year and continues on his path to a bright future in the world of music and performing. Thank you to all the students who committed themselves to the many rehearsals over this term and to the parents who allowed their students the opportunity to perform and showcase their creative talents. It is an experience they will take with them for life. Mrs Gibson.

  • Landcare It has been a very busy past few weeks in Landcare. During the term, the fantastic group have met each week in their second lunch break to take on many environmental activities within the school. Activities include; mulching gardens, weeding gardens, tending to and growing vegetables in the vegetable gardens, growing and eating fruit, growing potatoes and building a flower cow near the hall. If there are any parents or grandparents that would like to help on a Thursday from 1:30pm – 1:55pm it would be greatly appreciated. Just contact the front office of the school if you are interested.

    P&C AND CANTEEN NEWS

P & C News The Belmont BETTA store continues to sponsor Floraville School P&C. With any purchases at BETTA please bring a copy of any receipts from the store to the school office. We receive 1% commission for each purchase.

Uniform Shop Uniform shop hours are now: Wednesdays 2.30 pm to 3.15pm

What do I need to do as a uniform shop volunteer: Go to the uniform shop 1-3 times a term (you decide) at 2.30 - 3.15pm. Help customers (Floraville parents) in regards to sizes, uniform options, etc, then get what they need out of the stock cupboards. Hand them over to our more experienced volunteers for order processing and payment. That's it! We currently only have 5 volunteers which means everyone has to be rostered on many times a term. We are looking for 5 more volunteers to ensure parents are only working a few times a term. Contact Sue King if you'd like to know more 0405 718 628.
