Dear Parents
Our school conducts a range of leadership
programs through leadership teams; the new
Quest program which provides student led
playground activities and the Student
Representative Councils (SRCs).
Learning to be a leader through student
leadership programs is one way to participate,
however there are many ways for students to
get involved and be part of the student voice
What is an SRC? An SRC is a group of students
in a school elected by their fellow students. SRC
members represent all students in the school
and organise ways for students to participate
and contribute to their school community.
Congratulations to our new SRC for 2016. Their
badges will be presented to them at the Mid
Term assembly on Thursday afternoon the 26th
of May at 2pm.

The students did us all very proud during
NAPLAN, everyone did their very best. I was
impressed with the level of persistence of all
the students as not one person gave up during
the three assessments.
Please come down to Buz Brazel oval on Friday
for our athletics carnival. Come and celebrate a
day of our students achieving their personal
best. Parent helpers would be appreciated.
Hope to see you there.

Today (12/5/16) we read the book ‘The Day the
Crayons Came Home’, which is a sequel to ‘The Day the
Crayons Quit’. Mrs C helped us to construct a letter to
Duncan. The book was really funny! Here are some of
our letters.
Dear Duncan,
Today I finally got out of the toy fish that you got for Christmas did you know you
dropped it in the bin! I am so stinky my paper fell off and now I don’t have any clothes. I
am cold! Come and find me!
From your stinky friend sparkly Pink Crayon (By Dimity)
Dear Duncan,
Today I found out I was living in an aquarium.
First I thought I was painting, then I realised I don’t even have hands. I also remembered that you took me to an
aquarium a few weeks ago and you dropped me in with the dolphins and they keep on playing with me. I am sick of it!
Please come and get me I don’t care how much it costs just please come and get me!
Your blue frustrated friend Blue Crayon (By Kasimir)
Dear Duncan,
Remember me, I’m the Yellow Crayon. You left me at the soccer pitch at your last game. No, you don’t remember me!
You have stepped on me five times and I’m tangled up in the long grass. It’s only a matter of time before someone finds
me and puts me in the bin.
Your anxious friend, Yellow Crayon (By Imogen)
Dear Duncan,
I have found myself in a cars engine. Its getting hot in here. My wrapper has fallen off from the heat. Do you remember
leaving me here? I’m the peach pink crayon. Don’t you like me? I’m getting very short!
From Peach Pink (By Kobi)
Dear Duncan,
Today I found myself in the bottom of your bag. Your Lunch box has been leaking! Your yoghurt is all over me. Please
use me more often and show some respect for your things.
From your sparkly friend Green Crayon (By Elkie)
Year 3/4
Year 6 and Year 5 students have been supporting Kinders with reading after
lunch most days. They are listening to Kinders read familiar books supporting
fluency, reading strategies, sight words, expressive language and
comprehension of the stories. Year 6 and Year 5 students are to be
commended for doing such a fantastic job! They are patient, calm and
encourage Kinders with their reading, building Kindergarten students
confidence and self-esteem!

Tour of Scotts Head with Uncle Mark Flanders
Recounts by Year 1/2
On Friday with Uncle Mark we went around Scotts Head and we went to the Caravan Park and we
learnt what natural hair brush Aboriginal people used and we saw different plants and we saw a
goanna. He told us a humpback whale story and we went to Elephant Head. By Freya
The other day we went with Uncle Mark and we went out of the school and he told us how he
brushed his hair. We saw a big goanna go into the bush but he said it was following another
animal’s track. It was so cool. We finally got to the whale table and he told us some stories about
when he was little. We got there and we saw Pig Faces and he told us how we track animals. By
Tegan
Well, it all started when we were about to go out of the school grounds. Uncle Mark told us about
some things that we might see; by the way this was on Friday. Then we left the school grounds
and walked across the road, up the hill and just went straight. We were planning to go to the
beach but all of a sudden we saw a plant that was called well I don’t remember but it was
something useful enough any way. We also just saw another plant and you could use it for a hair
brush. All of a sudden, the whole class saw a big goanna, it was a giant! Then we went to the look
out and there was just a beautiful ocean in front of us, it was just beautiful! Then we went to Little
Beach and saw a plant called Pigface you could use it if you got a blue bottle sting. Then we all
went to Elephant Head and there Uncle Mark talked about a Hump back whale but then it was all
over so we all said, bye Uncle Mark thankyou Uncle Mark. By Jade
It started with us going to the cabins with Uncle Mark and got to know about Aboriginal hair
brushes. Then we went to Little Beach to learn about pig faces and blue bottle stings and how to
cure them, and then we went to Elephant Head to talk about Humpback whale stories. By Zaki
Kelas 3/4 are learning about States of Matter in
Indonesian Science. They have a journal entitled
"Mencair, mencair, mencair" (Melt, melt, melt) to
record substances they observe melting at home.
Ask your child to show you the folder and instructions
on the first page of the folder. The instructions are in
English so that parents can assist. The folders are
due back on Thursday 19 May.
Selamat berobservasi! (Happy observing). Bu Bibi

Uniform Survey—Please let us know your
thoughts if you haven’t already.
Our current school uniform is a sky blue poly-cotton shirt manufactured by Midford Uniforms. The cost at school is $19 for an embroidered
single shirt or $70 for 4.
The subject of changing our school Uniform to a Fairtrade certified, organic poly cotton or pure cotton shirt was raised at the recent P & C
meeting. This was sparked by a recent story in the media of Hazelbrook Public School sourcing their Polo shirts from a Fairtrade certified
company called Change Threads. Fairtrade Certification for a Uniform means that the production meets strict International standards to
protect workers and the Environment. Certified Organic means no synthetic chemicals, fertilisers, pesticides or herbicides are used and the
plants are not genetically modified.
Midford Uniforms were contacted and though not Fairtrade they say they inspect their factories in Indonesia & China and that their workers
are treated fairly. They are not organic.
Pure organic cotton shirts are more comfortable and cooler to wear. They are not as durable. Cost $26/shirt. Bundle cost to be arranged
Poly cotton with the polyester coming from recycled plastic bottles in the Fairtrade shirts and the cotton organic- will be tougher and keep
their colour and shape longer, but they are hotter to wear. They will be the same as what we have now. Cost would be $25/shirt. Bundle cost
to be arranged.
The P & C would like to know what the parents want. We would like you to fill in the form below with your preference and return it to school
as soon as possible.
My preference for the supplier of our school Uniform is (please circle choice)
1. Remain the same @$19/shirt
2. Change to Fairtrade poly cotton @$25/shirt
3. Change to Fairtrade pure cotton @ $26/shirt. Many thanks, SHPS P & C
