Exciting times! There is so much happening around the school at the moment – there is vibrancy and anticipation in the air. Our students are involved in a whole
array of activities as the term draws to a close. A number of classes are involved in excursions:
Pre Primary visited the Swan Valley yesterday
Our Strong ensemble is playing at the ABODA festival at Churchlands SHS on Sunday.
Year 2 are going to Kings Park on Tuesday 21st September
Senior Choir have a full rehearsal for the Massed Choir Festival on Tuesday, 21st September
The Massed Choir Festival is on Wednesday, 22nd September
Year 6 are going to the Spare Parts Theatre on Tuesday, 21st September
Planning for the Jumble Sale extravaganza is well advanced and the collection of
donated books and toys is underway. Token sales will continue until tomorrow,
outside Room 5 and Pre Primary before school. Sales will continue until Wednesday
of next week through the Canteen Ap QuickCliq, Home (quickcliq.com.au)
Sale of raffle tickets for these 6 up-cycled bikes kindly donated by a Year 1/PP family
will be sold in the two locations above every morning before school next week, (1 for $2 or 3 for $5). Tickets will also be on sale at the event, at which the draw will
take place.
Cake boxes have gone home for our regular bake sale at the athletics carnival next Tuesday. We’re expecting there will be lots of hungry kids at the jumble sale, so if contributors could make a few extras and send them along on Friday, our organisers (and the kids) would be very grateful. Cakes for the jumble sale can be dropped at Kindy Red before school or between 1.15 and 1.45 next Friday. We’d also love donations of homemade jams, lemon curd or preserves, which can be left at the canteen on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday.
This Sunday is a rather special day for us because our string ensemble is performing at the WA Schools’ Junior Orchestra Festival at Churchlands SHS. Our ensemble is
combining with East Fremantle PS and Richmond PS and you can have a peek preview of them at our assembly tomorrow. Huge thanks to Amy Thompson for the amazing job she does with our strings students.

Last Friday the kids from Year 1 – 6 gathered in the undercover area for an incursion from Super Sonic Science. It was a wonderful time and we got to see a lot of explosions and experiments, such as when Alisha (one of the performers) did a big explosion and made a cloud using liquid nitrogen. We also got to see many more cool experiments such as one where they set their hands on fire, making balloons shrivel up in liquid nitrogen and then they reinflated after taking them out of the liquid nitrogen. We also had 10-20 volunteers from the audience to see if Alisha could know down cups off their heads in under 15 seconds using a special air gun. They also filled the air gun with liquid nitrogen in its gas state in order to cause rings that they shot into the crowd and students tried to touch them. They also shot toilet paper out of a modified leaf blower. All up it was a very fun incursion, and everyone had lots of fun.

The senior students have learnt a new language this term – the language of coding! They have had the opportunity to design and play games such as Pong and Clicker on Scratch using conditionals, creating scoring systems, adding sounds and changing backgrounds. Some have also learnt valuable life skills in remembering logins and passwords! Additionally, we focused on robotics with Spheros and Edison machines. We made them follow lines, change angles, respond to light and detour around obstacles. It has been a really fun term. The middle students are learning how to give commands to a DASH robot using block code. They have enjoyed getting DASH to move along simple and complex pathways, to dance and to play the xylophone. They had fun making lego headbands for their robots. Students have also been using their coding skills on code.org and working their way through levels of increasing difficulty. They have completed challenges individually and in small groups on a website called Bebras solving small computing problems. Year 1 and 2 have participated enthusiastically in Digital Technology classes this term and have proven to be quick learners! The children have used three different apps, called Go, Dash and Blockly, to code the Dash robots. They have used the iPad to design a path for Dash, direct the robot, record and deliver messages to others, change the colours of the lights, make animations and various sounds. They have selected and adjusted ‘nodes’ on Path and selected specific blocks on Blockly to create an interesting programming sequence.
They have also learned about the meaning of an ‘algorithm’. The children know they need to be clear and precise when creating a set of instructions! They have practised this skill ‘unplugged’, by creating a shape out of Lego pieces, then instructing a buddy verbally to make the exact shape out of matching pieces of Lego. It’s harder than it seems!!
