Term 3 ‘Learning for the Future ‘ 22nd July 2015 Dear Parents & Caregivers, Tena koutou katoa Welcome back to school. We hope you had a great break with your children! We have another busy term ahead of us and we look forward to all the exciting learning that your children will be involved in over the next ten weeks. The curriculum focus for this term is Our Lifestyle – Tatou ahua and Kiwiana. The focus learning areas are Social Science, Visual Arts, Health and Physical Education, with a particular focus on physical activities that make us identify as New Zealanders. At Kamo Primary, we welcome and encourage parent help in the school, so if you have a few hours to spare we would really appreciate your help, and just a reminder that our school has an ‘open door policy’ at all times, so feel free to come in and see what’s going on. Staffing Update Miss Jade McLeod has resigned from her position as classroom teacher in Room 9. Jade has been given an opportunity of a lifetime to work at Victoria Educational Organisation in Hong Kong. There, she will be working as an early childhood educator, specialising in English. This is a fantastic opportunity for Jade and we wish her well in her exciting personal journey overseas. On behalf of the Board of Trustees and staff, thank you for all that youʼve done for the children in our school. This term we welcome three new teachers to Kamo Primary, they are… Mrs. Anne McRae who takes over from Rachael Henare as specialist teacher of literacy, Mrs. Heather Whelan returns to Kamo Primary as new entrant teacher working alongside Miss Barry and Mrs. Bidois in Room’s 16 and 17, and Miss Kayla Gentil will be taking over from Miss Jade McLeod in Room 9. From everyone here at KPS, we hope you enjoy being part of our wonderful school. Roll Growth This year we have experienced larger than expected roll growth and although this is a positive sign for our school it also places a strain on resources, staffing and physical space. We have seen an increase in new entrant numbers this year with 59 students enrolled as at week one of this term, and we have a further 20 new entrant students to come. In light of these numbers we have put in place a number of strategies to ensure that your children get the best possible start. A new classroom (the old dental clinic) is in the process of being refurbished and relocated closer to the school, but until it is completed Miss Barry, Mrs. Bidois and Mrs. Whelan will all work together in Room’s 16 and 17. They will have the adjoining doors open more and will effectively be using the space as an innovative learning environment. Rooms 16 and 17 will still have separate rolls and identities, but the 3 teachers will work together to maximise your child’s learning. Eventually there will be a new class formed, with Mrs. Whelan as the teacher in the new teaching space. The teachers are very excited about getting the opportunity to work in this different environment and rest assured your child’s well being is our foremost consideration in this process. The school roll is currently 453, and we finished the 2014 school year on a total roll of 444. Innovative Learning Environments – What are they? The term Innovative Learning Spaces (ILS) is used to refer to school classrooms but may include any designated place of learning such as science laboratories, distance learning contexts, libraries, tutoring centres, teachers’ staffrooms, gymnasiums, and the interaction between these spaces. The majority of school buildings were built between 1950 and the 70’s. Since then, teaching practice and student learning needs have changed significantly. Teaching and learning has changed significantly since the 50’s…Extensive research has proven that students learn best when they are:

• actively involved in decision making• initiating learning• collaborating together• making connections within and across learning areas

New technologies and building materials allow for new, vibrant and well connected learning spaces. All students deserve to be taught in these new innovative learning spaces, and benefit from new teaching methods. As we look forward to future building projects the Board of Trustees will be looking at how our existing buildings can be refurbished to become innovative learning environments. Welcome to Term 3 and another exciting term of school. Coming up later in the term is the Kapahaka Combo night with Kamo Intermediate and Kamo High School. This was a great success last year and we look forward to more of the same this year. Watch this space for the date (yet to be decided.)

On Tuesday, a school powhiri was held to welcome our new teachers and children to Kamo Primary. Kamo Primary School PlaygroundOur school playground is cool. The people will love our school playground. The monkey bars are shiny like blood

in your skin. The slide is green like lovely grass. The tunnel is like going on the bear hunt. The bridge is as wobbly like steam. The poles slide as fast as a plane. The yellow ladder is as yellow as a daffodil. I like the

awesome school playground.Tia Cooper Room 13
