As we approach Term 3 we also look forward to welcoming back the review officers from ERO on their three-year cycle of visits. The visit is scheduled for week 6, beginning 24 August. I will report further on the visit in our August newsletter once the officers have met representatives of the board in late July. In the past the review team have welcomed the opportunity to meet with representatives from the parental community. John Heyes Principal

The Mangere-Otahuhu Community Volunteers’ Awards and World Refugee Day

Students and an old student received awards on June 11 for the work they are doing in our community. Aisha Ouzillah Y13 – volunteers at St Vincent de Paul where she sorts donated clothing, and helps with customer service, and also works at the Mangere Community Law where she is a language interpreter for her community. Mohammed Al Jamal old student – helps at YMCA Onehunga where he supports students in holiday programmes, and at the Red Cross where he helps resettling refugee families. We would like to acknowledge the following student who also received an award. Metua Matenga – volunteers at the Old School Reserve Teaching garden and also at our own Mangere College garden. Then later on in June Mangere College students participated in the World Refugee Day celebration at the Owairaka District hall. The celebration was connected to the World Refugee Day. This is an international event co-ordinated by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. It is to honour the courage, resilience and strength of refugees throughout the world. On 20 June, thousands of organisations in hundreds of countries around the world came together to focus global attention not only on the plight of refugees and the causes of their exile, but also on the huge contributions they make to their new host communities, such as New Zealand. Our students, both current and former, did exceptionally well. Mohammed Al-Jamal, who featured in the "NZ Herald", in relation to success stories accompanying the increasing push to increase the numbers of refugees, was on the stage in the first part with the "dignitaries" and was the other keynote speaker alongside the Race Relations Commissioner, Dame Susan Devoy. In his speech Mohammed also paid tribute to his teachers at Mangere College. Aishah Oziullah, a Year 13 student, gave a speech on this year's theme "Big Change Starts Small" on behalf of and to the other students. (Susan Devoy later talked with her about being a role model and discussed with her about next year's Race Relations theme.) Of about 400 entries in the art competition all 4 of Mangere College entries were displayed and Ilham Akhlaqi came 3rd in the Secondary section.

Sports results so far for term 2

MC teams are all enjoying their winter sports seasons. It is particularly

pleasing to see the number of teams that are achieving a great deal of

success, it is also re-assuring to see that every team continues to play every

game in good spirit and that all students always enjoy their sport.

Red Puppy Appeal Bikkie Day – Monday 8 June Thank you to the following students who joined in the fun of the Red Puppy Appeal Bikkie Day and “baked a difference” to raise funds for the Blind Foundation guide dogs: Hannah Pio, Mary Maea, Danielle Sale, Manu Hanipale and Stephen Taylor, all from10 SE. Sesiona Faamausili, 10MA. Pearl Arama, Isaak Samoa, Nikita Tata, Melody Sauni and Manakia Maro from 10TH Red Puppy Appeal - Who are they? The Blind Foundation is New Zealand’s main provider of practical and emotional support for the 11,700 Kiwis who are blind or have low vision, enabling them to face their future with confidence. Their vision is to empower and support people who are blind or have low vision so they have the same opportunities and choices as everyone else. They equip people with the skills needed to participate fully in society, which includes support in living independently and getting around, help with technology, ways to continue reading and communicating, and advice on staying in or looking for work.

NZ U20 Rugby team - World Champions Former MC student - Isi Tu’ungafasi was a member of the victorious NZ U20

team that beat England in the U20 Cup finals. Isi was a student at MC for five

years and left in 2012.

Isi played in all 5 matches including the hard fought final. As the seventh child

out of 12 children, Isi is lucky to have older brothers – Laisa who played for

Tonga at RWC11, Ofa who plays for the Blues and has been called up as part

of the wider All Blacks squad for the Samoa Test, John who is a Counties rep.

and a father (also a Tongan rep) to call on for rugby knowledge and skills.

Isi has also been selected in the Auckland ITM squad. He has achieved a goal

that his older brothers could not do.

Finally Isi said that, “Missing home and training in 30oC heat continuously

were the biggest challenges.”

Emergency Management For all of this year the college has been working with an independent company, Harrison Tew, that specialises in emergency management for schools. We have concentrated on how the college should respond safely and quickly to the need for a lock down or an evacuation in a range of circumstances. As part of our work it is important that we make sure that the parental community is also aware of their role in student safety in the event of a lockdown or evacuation. Should parents and caregivers hear of a lock down or evacuation at the college we ask that you DO NOT come to school or try to phone, as we will not be in a position to respond to you, and your presence on site may make it more difficult for us or the emergency services to manage the situation. All information regarding the emergency will be updated on our school web-site as regularly as possible.

Lateness to school It is a concern to us that a number of our senior students are coming late to school and are missing out on valuable lesson time. We ask that parents and caregivers impress on their children the importance of punctuality and assist them to take responsibility and be at school by 8.40. Students who do arrive late to school are expected to bring an explanatory note with a contact phone number. Students who are repeatedly late will be interviewed with their family by either a Dean or a member of senior management.

Mangere College Drivers’ Licence Programmes Learner Licence Lessons: In partnership with Pukapuka Community Trust we have delivered lessons to two groups of students so far this year. These groups have already sat their licence and all of the students passed. Auckland Transport and Auckland Council have funded the programme and this means that the cost for the Learner Licence is reduced to $55. This includes the cost of sitting the licence which is usually $96.10, plus the cost of paying for our licence tutors. We are starting the next group of lessons early next term when we reach our target of having 25 students who have paid their $55. Students over 16 can get themselves on the list by paying this money to the Stationery Shop. Many of our students have been paying this money in instalments over several weeks. Students must have a Birth Certificate from New Zealand, Niue, Cook Islands or Tokelau, a passport which is current or expired less than two years ago, or have a New Zealand Citizenship Certificate. We would like to thank Auckland Transport and Auckland Council for their support for our students and also thank our tutors from Pukapuka Community Trust: Pikura Purotu and Inu Pamatatau. Restricted Licence Lessons: Once the students gain their Learner Licence they are legally able to be taught to drive but must always have a supervisor beside them such as a parent or suitable person who has had a Full Licence for more than two years. After having their Learner Licence for six months the students are then able to sit their Restricted Licence test. Mangere College has obtained funding from Auckland City Council to help students prepare for their Restricted Licence Test. Students can book at the Mangere College Careers Centre for three, free, hour-long lessons from Pikura Purotu who is a licenced driving instructor. These lessons can take place during the term or during the holidays.

SEEK THE HEIGHTS On the 6th of June, Mangere College opened its doors for a community fundraising concert held in the school’s auditorium. The money raised would go towards mission work in Indonesia. The event was hosted by Ma’a Brian Sagala, a radio announcer for Pacific Media Network, and featured other artists, well-known in the music industry, such as TJ Taotua and Ria. The audience were treated to a great night of laughter, music and dance; show-casing the awesome talents of South Auckland. The evening was made extra special by the return ‘home’ of old students Naina and Logovii Tupa’i from Adeaze, Nyssa Collins, runner-up in X-Factor NZ, and Valerie Fasavalu, currently at Excel School of Performing Arts. It is always great to see Mangere College students leaving school and continuing to ‘Seek the Heights!’ It was also appropriate that the event was covered by Jo Latif, ex-MC teacher, and husband Justin, editors of the local community publication, 275 Times.
