POKAKA ROOM 13 – YEAR 5/6
Recently, Pōkākā students have been working in the school garden, digging, fertilising, planting and learning a lot about horticulture. They have also been seriously involved in combining ideas from their work in the Otatara Reserve, the Māori myth ‘Poutini’ and new found IT skills inspired by IT education specialist Karla Sanders. In small groups they have created short I-Movies, some acting, some using dance and some utilising puppets to portray their stories. In different small groups they have also been creating short ’trailers’ in I-Movies, developing their acting abilities and cinematography skills; we definitely have budding film-makers amongst them!
TARATA ROOM 14 – YEAR 5/6
We are citizen scientists. Tarata finished off the term with a visit to Noki Kaik beach (just past Whalers Bay) to conduct a litter survey. We were lucky to have Ben Knight with us from Sustainable Coastlines who explained the process and the importance of removing plastics from our waterways. We surveyed an area 100m long by 20m wide, picking up all non-organic waste that we saw. It was shocking to see how much litter was in the area. We started sorting the litter according to what it was made of (plastic, metal, glass etc and what it is (such as bottle tops, lighters, clothes pegs, food wrappers etc). Then we had to count the thousands of pieces into categories. One of the groups tried to count all of the shotgun wads we found, we are up to 217 so far. All of our data will be loaded into the litter intelligence database and the statistics are being used to get a real picture of how much litter we have on our coastlines and where it came from. We will be conducting another survey late in Term 4 and will continue to survey the same site four times per year. We can also use the data to conduct our own investigations as to the main causes of litter in our area and come up with ways to reduce litter on our beaches. Through completing these projects, not only are our students learning to be scientists in their area but also understanding the importance of Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

ENTERTAINMENT BOOK It’s almost school holidays, so keep the whole family entertained with the Entertainment Book APP. The multi-city option will give the school $26 towards our fundraising goal. Both options are valid for 12 months from activation so there’s plenty of time to get the value back! Your digital membership can be accessed from up to four different devices so it’s perfect for sharing with friends/family. https://www.entertainmentbook.co.nz/orderbooks/2605b24 Congratulations to Tiffany Clay who is the lucky winner of our prize draw and will have her Entertainment Book membership fee refunded by the parent group.
