Year 8 Term 3 Homework Pack Greenacre Academy intends homework to be diverse in nature, focusing on more project-based work which will be on-going over a number of weeks. This booklet includes homework from each subject that your son / ward studies at school. Our Expectations Students must complete and submit homework pieces from each project as their teacher directs. Teachers will inform students when each piece of homework is due in and this will be recorded in their planners. Please also note that some tasks in the booklet are subject to change, and this will be done so at the discretion of the teacher. This would occur on occasions where a different task may be more beneficial to your son/ward’s learning. As well as the three Homework Tasks, there are some additional activities for each subject. Reading List Students should read for at least 30 minutes each night. Reading frequently will help students to develop their vocabulary and literacy skills. Please encourage you son / ward to read. Suggested reading material has been included within the projects for each subject. Stretch & Challenge Students are encouraged to push themselves, completing more tasks where they see fit. If they have a particular interest or gift in a given area, students should be encouraged to complete the stretch and challenge task. To help promote this, the completion of the homework tasks will help your son/ward develop these certain skills. The Skills for life focus is EMPLOY ME - Excellence, Manners, Perseverance, Listening, Organisation, You, Motivation and Employability Accelerated Reader Year 7/8 students are taking part in the Accelerated Reader programme, which is an online programme that develops students reading skills and promotes a love of reading. As part of this initiative, we have provided students with their own Accelerated Reader from the library. This reading forms part of basic equipment for students in year 7/8, therefore students should have their reading book with them every day. It is essential that reading books are looked after, while on loan, and we ask that students keep these in as good condition as possible. Bedrock Vocabulary Bedrock is a new and innovative vocabulary programme which enables students to complete interactive lessons which take between 15-20 minutes. During the lessons, students will learn the definitions of keywords and complete a range of comprehensive tasks to improve their reading skills. As your child progresses through the curriculum, they will study hundreds of words, whilst reading fiction and non-fiction texts regularly. Learning key vocabulary is essential for all subjects in order for your son/ward to access their exams. We recommend that students complete two sessions per week, some of these may be completed in school, during lessons, but students also need to engage with the programme in their own time too. Students will need to:

We ask that you acknowledge and share your son/ward’s success with the Bedrock Vocabulary programme. If your son/ward is unable to access the internet from home, they are able to use the library after school every day as part of homework club which takes place from 2.50 pm – 3.50 pm. Study Room If your son/ward needs help with homework or a quiet place to study we run a homework club every weekday from 2.50-3.50 in the Library. Queries? There are apps for almost every task you might want to perform on your smart phone, such as messaging, games, sports, etc. You are to research apps, which are specifically used to keep score of football games. Write a report including at least four different apps. Focus on the following questions:

How easy is it to use?

How much does it cost?

Is it worth it for the price?

What can it do?

Who made it?

2 Log on to App Inventor. Add a second count button and a second count label. Once you have done this, add code so

that when the second button is pressed, the second label increases by 1. Finally adapt the code for the Reset button so that it returns both labels to 0. Print screen your new section of code, paste it onto a new Microsoft Word document and explain what you have done and how it affects your app. Attempt this yourself, however if you do need extra support a help sheet can be collected from your teacher.
