Meagan Cook Principal’s Report
This week we celebrated Book Week, the costumes
were amazing but the highlight of our parade was
when the whole Junior School (F-6) performed what
can only be described as a ‘flash mob’. Initially lead by
a circle of Year 5/6 students, each year level became
involved until they were all up and dancing. A big
congratulations Ms Emily Phillips who secretly planned
this and taught all students the dance and managed
to ensure they kept it a secret from their teachers. I
did notice a few Mums that seemed to know all the
moves, so I can only imagine there was a lot of
practise at home as well! It was a great celebration
and we will continue to promote the theme of reading
being everyone’s secret power!
I received an email, this week from our 3 Year 9
students who are attending the Gnurad Gundidj
School for Student Leadership. They are currently
planning their Community Learning Project and had
some ideas to share with me before I attend their
presentations on Friday 13 September. They have
some great ideas that involve music and building a
sense of community which I look forward to learning
more about. Very soon we will be offering our current
Year 8 students the opportunity to apply to attend the
School for Students Leadership – Snowy River Campus
in Term 1, 2020. The School for Students Leadership is
a residential camp that lasts for 9 weeks, it is an
amazing opportunity/program that we are lucky to be
a part of.
Staff across the College have been busy preparing
interim Reports for all students and these will be
available on Monday 26 August, at which time the
booking system will open on COMPASS, providing an
opportunity for parents to discuss progress with
classroom teachers. I look forward to seeing families
make the most of this opportunity and encourage
both parents/carers and students to attend the inter-
views.

Subject Selection Update
As part of our Careers and Transition program,
students, parents and teachers have begun our
course counselling processes. These counselling
sessions followed on from our Curriculum Showcase
night on Thursday 1 August. I was fortunate to
attend the Subject Information Sessions and it was
encouraging to see our students engaged in making
informed choices about their future pathway options.
Our College offers a wide range of subjects aimed to
maximise learning outcomes and to optimise pathway
options for all students. In these counselling sessions,
students were presented with information about the
nature of each elective to assist them in making
informed choices when selecting subjects for 2020.
Information was also presented about the process of
choosing subject preferences using our online
program. All students receive a print out of their
preference selection which should be taken home
and discussed with parents and guardians. If you
would like further information about the 2020
curriculum please refer to the handbooks found on
the college website, or alternatively contact Ms Carlie
Case (Director of Careers) or a member of the relevant
Senior or Middle School team. Thank you to all
students and staff who attended these sessions.
Immunisation
A reminder that Knox City Council staff will be
returning to BK-12 College on Monday, 14 October to
undertake the final round of Immunisations. Year 7
students will receive their third and final dose of HPV
vaccine whilst Year 10 students have the option of
receiving the Meningococcal vaccine. Students in Year
10 wishing to have the vaccination must return their
signed consent cards prior to the Friday 30 August.
Parents of students who find that the immunisation
process makes them highly anxious are encouraged to
have the vaccinisations administered by their local GP
in the privacy of the doctor’s consultancy rooms.
.The Importance of Full Time
Attendance – Every day counts
Schooling is compulsory for children and young
people aged from 6-17 years old unless an exemption
from attendance or enrolment has been granted. Daily
school attendance is important for all children and
young people to succeed in education and to ensure
they don't fall behind both socially and
developmentally.
Children and young people who regularly attend
school and complete Year 12 or an equivalent
qualification have better health outcomes, better
employment outcomes, and higher incomes across
their lives. It is important that children develop habits
of regular attendance at an early age.
School participation is important as it maximises life
opportunities for children and young people by
providing them with education and support networks.
School helps people to develop important skills,
knowledge and values which set them up for further
learning and participation in their community. Every
day counts and we encourage parents to ensure their
children have maximum attendance at all times.
Students are expected to attend the school in which
they are enrolled, during normal school hours every
day of each term, unless there is an approved
exemption from school attendance for the student, or
the student is registered for home schooling and has
only a partial enrolment in a school for particular
activities.

3/4 Students
Sharing The Planet On Tuesday 20 August, the Year 3/4 students hosted a showcase of their learning for their recent inquiry on
Sharing the Planet. In order to demonstrate how well they understood the central idea “Biodiversity relies on
maintaining the interdependence and balance of organisms within systems”, students were asked to create a
picture story book that depicted a specific biome or ecosystem and interweave some of the technical language
they learnt. The book also needed to include the text features of a narrative and use this to highlight a problem
that might arise. Alongside this, students used their art skills to enhance their understanding to complete a
diorama of their biome with demonstrating specific art skills developed over the term. Some of the students
work will be displayed in the library. We would like to say a massive thank you to all the special guests that came
along and supported our students. We hope you learnt a lot as well. Keep an eye out for some of our stories
displayed in our building, the library and highlighted at assembly.

Competition
Friday 9 August, 2019
70 students, 9 teams, 45+ games. The Year
5/6 cohort participated in a huge day of
basketball at Dandenong Basketball Stadium
on Friday, 9 August.
It was an amazing day with all students
showing huge improvement of skill and
teamwork throughout the day with plenty of
goals, plenty of wins and plenty of smiles. All
students showed the college values
throughout the day and it was great to see
the support that students gave the other
Boronia K-12 College teams when they were
not playing.
Thank you to secondary students Cooper,
Jack & Ryan who came for the day and
developed their coaching experience as well
as helping other teams with coaching,
scoring and supporting. Thank you to all
families who came out to support the
students, it was very much appreciated and
great to have you all involved in the day.

They were all discharged from class with a 2kg flour baby in
a cloth Nappy and spare disposable nappies. Their birth

They are expected to take their baby with them where ever
they go for the next week. Students are logged into a padlet
which asks them to complete certain baby tasks each day
eg. Change nappies etc) new tasks/responsibilities appear
each day
Year 11
ELC Visit Health and Human Development students have been studying the stages of development. As part of our unit we
have been to visit the kinder kids (thanks Michelle and team for having us). I’m not sure who had more fun the
kinder kids or the big kids!
Year 9
City Experience
Students elected to participate in either an Ice

It took the students a little while to warm up out

ESSENTIAL ASSESSMENT AWARDS
Essential Assessment is the program that we are using in Maths this year at Boronia K-12. Certificates will be
presented at assembly every two weeks.
To get a certificate, students need to receive 5, 10, 15 or 20 trophies on Essential Assessment. To get
trophies students need to be practising maths on Essential Assessment and using My Numeracy. They will
receive stars that build up to trophies.
Essential Assessment can be completed at home. All students need is a login and password. This should be
in their school diary so it can be used at both home or at school. Students can ask their teacher if you do not
have these details.
If students are unable to practise at home, Miss Barnard will be running a maths club at lunchtime on a
Monday for Essential Assessment.
The following students received awards this week: Siena, Rayne, Xavier, Oliver, Chayse, Aiden, James, Tilly,
Lachlan, Hannah, Ava, Maya, Cameron-Leigh, Marty and Lachlan.
