Term 3 Week 4 16 August 2018
Message from the Principal Dear Parents and Carers
Year 6 Bunnings BBQ & Cake Stall - A Raging Success!
On Saturday the 11th of August, Year 6 held its annual Bunnings Barbecue and Cake Stall Fundraiser at
Rockdale Bunnings.
The Year 6 parents and students baked a wonderful variety of cakes and slices that were sold on the day.
Parents worked tirelessly on the barbecue, selling sausages on fresh bread rolls and drinks. The day was
very successful in raising funds for our Year Six farewell and demonstrated the wonderful community, spirit
and support from Sans Souci Public School parents and students. Our final total raised was $3829.75.
We would like to thank the organising committee and also the many parents and family members who
generously made cash donations, food & drink donations and gave time to support the day. Thanks also to
the teachers, parents and students who took time out on the day to work at or visit the stall.
Elektra A on behalf of Year 6 Students

Sutherland Shire Schools Music Festival
Last Monday The Junior Choir and Junior Jazz performed on
stage at The Sutherland Shire Music Festival. All students had
a blast and were absolutely terrific on the night. They should
be applauded for their outstanding behaviour, wonderful voices
and amazing dance moves. They have been practising all year
and the effort they put into this performance shone through on
the night. Thank you to all the parents who attended the night
to show their support. I would also like to acknowledge Miss
Graham and Mrs Kennedy for their outstanding coordination of
these groups.
Today and tonight our Senior Choir and Senior Jazz groups are performing in the St George performing Arts
Festival at the Hurstville Entertainment Centre. This is the Sans Souci’s first time involved in this festival as
the school is now part of the Kogarah Network of schools.
Year 5 Lego Robotics Workshop at James Cook Technology
High School On Monday and Tuesday last week Year 5 travelled
to James Cook Technology High School for a Lego robotics
workshop. After meeting at the library we all participated in fun
activities like building a robot in groups, climbing the book mountain
and navigating around the table. We were helped by students from
the high school and were also lucky to have a yummy sausage sizzle
for lunch.

Year 5 Excursion to the Parliament House
On August 13th, Year five went on an excursion to the
Parliament House and the Australian Museum. Our day
started off at 8:30 in the morning. We arrived at the city by
bus at 9:30 am.
The first thing we did was to go down into the Botanical
Gardens to eat some lunch. We then walked to the
Parliament House and were greeted by our tour guide who
told us all we need to know about the green room (Legislative
Assembly) in the Parliament House. While we were in the
green room, we learnt about the different roles that people
have and we also did a role play. The roles that people played
in the green room where speaker, sergeant at arms, leader
of the opposition and the Minister of Education. We also had
the privilege of meeting Mr Steve Kamper, our State Member
for Rockdale. We then went into the red room (Legislative
Council). There were many things we learnt, and we got to
do another role play. The characters we got to play were
President, Leader of the opposition and members of the
cross bench. After the Parliament House we went and ate
fruit break while Mr Kerr snacked on a soft serve ice cream
dipped in chocolate. Soon after, we ventured to the
Australian Museum. We saw many fascinating objects,
animals and insects.
It was a tremendous excursion, and we really enjoyed
learning about Parliament House. Thank you to the wonderful
teachers Mr Kerr, Mrs Vournazos, Mrs Ward and Mr
Richardson for taking us on this extremely educational
excursion.

Book Week Parade and Open Classrooms
To celebrate Book Week this year, the school will be holding a Book Week Character Parade and Open
Classrooms on Thursday 30th August. All students are encouraged to participate by dressing as their
favourite book character and families are invited to join the celebration. The event will incorporate a partner
reading session and entertainment provided by the Greek Dance Groups, the Training Band, Performing
Band and Performing Ensemble, as well as an opportunity to visit the library to buy and donate a book. A
note with full details has been sent home today.
Public Speaking Stage Finals Next Week
Good luck to those students selected to represent their class at next week’s public speaking finals held over
three days in the school hall. I congratulate all students for their efforts so far in public speaking at a class
level and look forward to the finals next week.
Thanks to Miss Noonan, Mrs Walkden Miss Killey and Miss Wright for coordinating the events and to guest
adjudicator Mrs Rosenthal who has once again volunteered her time this year for the school.
Morning and Afternoon Supervision of Students
There have been a number of students arriving at school prior to commencement of the school's staff
supervision roster which begins at 8.45 am. There are no adult staff members available to ensure the safety
of children in the playground prior to that time.
I understand that many parents have commitments at work which require them to leave before 8:45 am.
However, there is available within the school an Out of School Hours (OOSH) Child Care Centre within the
school which operates from 7:30-9am every school morning and from 3:15pm-6:30pm each afternoon.
Alternatively, you may be able to make arrangements with friends or neighbours for the supervision of your
children. Some families in the school with working parents take turns to take each other's children to school.
As well, many employers will be sympathetic to parents with responsibilities for caring for children and will
allow some flexibility in parents' working hours. By law, employers are restricted from treating an employee
detrimentally on the grounds of their status as a carer.
Whatever arrangements you make, you need to understand that you remain legally responsible for the child
prior to 8.45 am when supervision begins. Staff members on duty from 8:45am-9:15am now wear highly
visible pink vests with ‘SSPS Staff’ emblazed on the back. This is to ensure students in need of assistance
within this time readily identify a staff member.
In the afternoon period students are dismissed at 3:15pm and unless travelling independently home, should
be picked up by parents as soon as possible after the final bell of the day. It is not appropriate practice for
parents and carers to ask their children to wait in the playground or near the OOSH area for parents who
may arrive late. I thank you for your cooperation in keeping our students safe.

Calling on Sans Souci
It’s time to help our farmers who are facing the worst drought in a
century.
We will be having a 2 part fundraising event.
Part 1 will be a fiver for a farmer day on the 4th of September where
the children can dress as a farmer for $5.
Part 2 will be a raffle held in Term 4.
All proceeds will go to a small community who is in dire need during
this drought.
So grab your flanno and your fiver and think of our farmers.
Mrs Dobosz, Ms Noonan & Ms Graham
