As I type it is late at night and I have just been swimming through the 2016NAPLAN data. As usual it is not the data that drives performance but the use ofthe data that is truly important. Once again there is much to be proud of and forme it is also the breaking down of the data into personalised stories that is themost rewarding. Knowing each of our students and seeing them make personal andacademic growth is what our school is about and what we celebrate again thisyear.
At present the school is also completing a new phenomenon in the Department ofEducation which is called ‘External Validation’. This is a process that requires usto map our performance against the School Excellence Framework and provideevidence of our decisions. Kind of a self audit, but with a follow up panel meetingin coming weeks. It has been a time consuming, but incredibly rewarding processwhere we have been forced to press pause and truly reflect upon schoolperformance. After 5 years of significant change it is a great time to do this andmuch of the data is truly amazing. I have enjoyed very much sharing it withcolleagues across the state who have the greatest respect for Young North PSand its community.
I must apologise for not getting to this week’s athletics carnival, but the SEFprocess requires the school to put in a lot of time on the paperwork front. Whenour students are out of the school there is more chance of getting some of itdone. Besides, the truth is after breaking my leg and with new young staff I amsacked from the relay team. A big thanks to Mr Druett and everyone who helpedmake it a great day after such a long and frustrating wait.
I would also like to thank the community for your support of our recentEducation Week events. Students and staff had a great time and the Book Fairwas an absolute success. Your attendance at these events always reminds us ofour strong and committed school community.Kel SmerdonPrincipal Young North PS

PBL UpdatePBL Master Class TrainLast week, Mrs Kirkwood and Mrs Eatock had the privilege of attending a PBLMasterclass conference in Homebush, Sydney where we were immersed in the richwisdoms of Keynote speaker Professor Terry Scott, a behaviourist from USA who hasbeen instrumental in implementing the PBL framework. The conference has helped toequip us with strategies and structures to move into effective Tier 2 supports for ourstudents here at Young North. Stay tuned to see the developments in our Tier 2Support groups next term. We hope to structure groups to meet the needs of a widerange of students, explicitly teaching and practising specific skills in a safe environmentwithin the small group environment.

We have been doing experiments to find out how we use water in our world. We did artworks using parallel and
perpendicular lines.
This term 1M have been doing all sorts of interesting things!
We have had some fun sports days with our mini-olympics and K-2 Athletics Carnival.
NoticeboardThe year has been busy with exploring the ins and outs of resilience, core values and emotions! This term our focus has been onunderstanding empathy, a difficult concept for many to grasp but onethat I believe makes the single most impact in our community and to anindividual’s success in the social arena.
We continue to use Circle Time as the method of teaching which is atotally fun and engaging way to learn. It also gives all students an equalopportunity to participate and feel like a valued class member. This isgreat for self-esteem.
What a great resource our Children’s authors provide by creatingliterature with depth to help us to understand the concepts of life in ameaningful and engaging way. Role play is also a favourite activitywhere students experience a safe environment to play out what theyare learning. And of course the games we play are also a great funway to learn some specific social skills, like being part of a large groupand co-operating.
In Terms one and two, our small groups kicked off, offering somestudents the opportunity to experience a mentored approach tolearning. Here, where we are able to unpack some of the grey areas tosupport our students in creating more success in their friendships, self-esteem and self-regulation skills. Thanks for your ongoing support for oursocial skill program here at Young North.
