Excursions

PCS Stage 2 students went on an overnight excursion to Lake Burrendong on Thursday 12 September.

Students could not wait for Thursday to arrive while some had mixed feelings about leaving home, but all in all, 28 students and 4 teachers left at 7.30am.

When we arrived, we were assigned to our dormitories and met our tour guide, Liam. Our first activity was Low Ropes which is a series of individual and group physical challenges that require a combination of teamwork, skills, and commitment. After lunch was Rock Climbing which is an individual activity focussing on developing patience, concentration and overcoming our fears. The excitement and the enthusiasm of the students carried on into the night with a fun night of improvisation in the hall.

On day two of the excursion, we had two activities, Orienteering and Archery which is a combination of group and individual activities.

PCS students and the teachers thoroughly enjoyed the Lake Burrendong food and fun activities on offer!

Sport

On September 5, some of the Stage 2 and Stage 3 students went to Cheney Park to participate in the Touch Football Gala Day. We had 5 teams in total: two Stage 2 teams and three Stage 3 teams.

Once we arrived we went straight to a spare field and started practising, so we were ready for our first game at around 10am.

Each team played a total of 4-5 games throughout the day, and in between games we found a spare spot and started practising our passing, running and catching.

We had a lot of fun playing against all the other schools; even if we didn’t win all of our games... I can’t wait to play again!

On Wednesday 18 September, Year 3 and 4 went to North Parkes Oval to play cricket against three other schools.

We all had a lot of fun at the Gala Day and everyone played their best, which was great because we love playing sport and giving it a go. It was heaps of fun and we felt very proud when we won one of the games.

On Wednesday 11 September, selected students from Stage 3 had the opportunity to represent Parkes Christian School at the Woolworths Cricket Blast Gala Day.

Both PCS teams played exceptionally well with: PCS Sixers having some extraordinarily good bowls and hits against a rep team with PCS Thunder having an amazing winning streak of 4 games.

In the final game both PCS teams played each other and it was lots of fun for all of us.

On Thursday 19 September, a select group of students went to Canowindra for a girls only League Tag Gala Day and it was extremely hot!

We played four 20 minute games and won two of them. We played against other schools in the area and some even had rep teams which were really good. The last team we played against had really tall players and it’s safe to say I was trodden on being so small, but even so I enjoyed every minute of playing and our team played awesomely!

It was a great day!

Careers Day

On Friday 20 September, students travelled to the airport for the AirVenture careers day. Students participated in a number of careers talks and activities to raise awareness about job opportunities in the aviation sector. Talks were presented by several people who are working in the industry, involving the airforce, doctors, QANTAS link, recreational flying and manufacturers.

Students were able to get hands on experience with fibreglassing processes, drone technologies and flying in a flight simulator. Students were able to visit a number of trade stands that support the aviation industry.

It was a great day out!

Work Experience

Six PCS students have had the opportunity to build an aeroplane and watch it fly in a unique one week work experience opportunity in the aviation industry, thanks to AirVenture Australia!

Congratulations to Scott Green, Ella Ross, Caleb Hill, Tom Unger, William Greenland and Joel Hall-Matthews on making it into this life changing program.

The program was designed to give young people a taste of aviation and the aerospace industry.

It’s far greater than just building or assembling the aircraft. The 25 students learn to work with people they’ve never worked opposite before, work with instructors and supervisors they’ve never met and work as a team in a project environment to tight deadlines - it’s exactly like working in a workplace.

All 25 young builders were put in to teams to build a part of the aircraft. They started on Monday 16 September and continued until Friday where the aircraft was assembled, finishing it on Saturday. The maiden flight took place on Sunday during the airshow.

Parkes Shire LibraryWe are excited to announce that Parkes Shire Library is inviting us to participate in Library visits again.

As the Library is limited on space, we will have to take smaller groups. The dates are as follows:

Year 1/2 - Wednesday 23 October

We are so excited to be visiting the Library again!

Miss Barrass

Rosedurnate VisitOn Thursday 12 September, Years 5 and 6 had the pleasure of going to Rosedurnate and performing for them.

We recited poetry, performed a drama that some of us wrote, sang and played songs. Some of the residents even started singing with us!

Beforehand, Stage 3 had made cards containing encouraging phrases. After the performance, everyone personally handed out their card to a resident and started chatting and introducing themselves. Some of the residents were moved to tears with gratitude and happiness. One boy was talking to a resident and she was so happy that she kissed him on the cheek! We all really enjoyed this experience.

I believe that using our talents to serve others is a wonderful act of community service. The Bible says: As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace. 1 Peter 4:10.

Have a nice weekend!

Business Studies! On Tuesday our Business Studies students joined Parkes High School and Forbes High School for an intensive session looking at the Finance unit of Business Studies.

Our presenter was from Resource Factory and helped students to consolidate their knowledge on the syllabus, exam strategies and how to interpret a balance sheet and financial ratios. He also gave them great insight into McDonalds as a case study for them to use in their upcoming HSC exams.
