Stage 1 – Term 3, Week 9
Be a zookeeper! (Day 1 - Monday)
This week you’re going to research your own animal! Later (next week) you’re going to film yourself giving a zookeeper talk!
You can share your zookeeper talk with friends and family!
You have been learning how to write information reports about animals. Information
reports give the reader interesting and important facts about the animal.
Your task today:
1. Watch the video on class dojo.
2. Choose an animal to research.
3. Find a digital text that gives you interesting and important facts about the animal. Read the text and write down
research notes. Do not copy! Just write key words to help you remember the fact.
You could use:
Dk findout:
National Geographic Explorer magazine – Voyager
National Geographic Explorer magazine – Pioneer

Stage 1 – Term 3, Week 9
Be a zookeeper! (Day 2 - Tuesday) Information reports are organised in a way that helps the reader to understand new
information.
Topic headings help the reader to know what each section is about. The author can
choose the topic headings to match the information they want to share!
Your task today:
1. Watch the video on class dojo.
2. Look at your research notes. Decide on topic headings that match the information you have found.
3. Organise your facts under your topic headings – use an organising grid!
4. Do you have enough information for each of your topics? If you want to find out more information you can
choose another text to look at. Getting your information from more than one text is a good idea! Sort your new
research notes on your organising grid.

Be a zookeeper! (Day 3 - Wednesday)
Good information reports include research from different texts (sources).
Your task today:
1. Watch the video on class dojo.
2. Find a zookeeper talk about your animal. This is a spoken text. Choose
one that’s about 3 or 4 minutes. If you are having trouble finding a
zookeeper talk about your animal ask your teacher for help.
You could use: Melbourne zoo keeper talks:
Taronga zoo keeper talks:
Dubbo zoo keeper talks:
You can also google ‘zookeeper talk + the name of the animal you are researching. Choose the best video you can find! Look at where the video comes from. Videos from sanctuaries and zoos are good. We have looked at zookeeper talks from:
• Healesville Wildlife Santuary
• San diego zoo
• Taronga zoo
• Melbourne zoo
3. Pause the video to write down any new facts. Just write key words to help you remember the fact.
4. Put your new notes under the correct topic heading on your organising grid.
Don’t forget to log on for the zoom: Year 2 on Wednesday and Year 1 on Thursday. During the zoom we’ll
come up with success criteria for creating the BEST zookeeper talks!!
Stage 1 – Term 3, Week 9
Be a zookeeper! (Day 4 - Thursday)
Information reports are written by the author in their own words. Look at the
facts you have found out. Put each fact in a sentence. Say it out loud before you
write it down to check it makes sense! Read your sentence when you have
written in down and fix up any mistakes.
Organise your sentences into paragraphs. Each topic heading will be a new
paragraph.
Your task today:
1. Watch the video on class dojo.
2. Use your research notes to write your information report! Use your topic headings
to organise your research. Think of a good opening and closing sentence to start and finish
your report. Include a detailed picture of the animal.
3. When you have written and edited your information report, practise reading it aloud
– don’t video it yet! We will use our zoom session to come up with some success criteria
that you can use to make sure your zookeeper talk video is the best it can be!!
4. Share your written information report on your portfolio.
Stage 1 – Term 3, Week 9
Next week (week 10):
Be a zookeeper! (Filming)
Zookeeper talks are an interesting way to present information reports.
They are a spoken text – the audience doesn’t read the information but
listens to the information they hear to find out facts about the animal.
Zookeeper talks also include visual information about the animal – we
can look at the animal to learn more while we listen to the zookeeper.
Your task today:
• Watch the video on class dojo (in Monday’s morning post)
• Ask a family member to video your zookeeper talk.
• Dress up so you look like a zookeeper in the video!
• Use the success criteria (posted on Dojo) to keep you on track.
• Watch your video and give yourself feedback – have another go if
you can make it better.
• Show your detailed animal drawing as part of your talk (make sure
it’s your best work and ready for publishing!)
• Share your zookeeper talk on your portfolio!
