Woody Head Excursion Our excursion has been fabulous and the kids are really enjoying their time at
Woody Head. When we arrived on Tuesday we set up our campsite and settled
in. On Wednesday we visited the rainforest at Iluka and were fascinated by some
of the flora and fauna we discovered. Yesterday afternoon we had Ben from
National Parks and Wildlife take us on a Rockpool Ramble along the Woody Head
rock platform. The kids were amazed by the many creatures and the plant life
they discovered hidden away in their habitats.
Yesterday it was rainy and fairly miserable in the morning for our ferry ride to
Yamba. We visited the Museum and the Angourie pools. It cleared as the day went
on and by afternoon we did some fishing and swimming in beautiful weather.
Minyani also caught a young turtle in the swimming channel. It seemed that it
may have been sick so we reported it to the Marine Rescue. Today we packed up
our campsite and returned to school.
Here are some quotes from the students:
Millie- The oceans were beautiful.
Minyani- Today I rescued a young green turtle and we think it had swallowed
plastic.
Kya- Our tent got wet
during the storm and it
stunk like a wet dog.
Kalei- The mouth-watering
ice cream was so
refreshing and delicious!

Remembrance Day This Sunday 11 November 2018 the centenary celebration
of Remembrance Day will be held accross our nation.
This historic occasion will also be commemorated at
the cenotaph in Broadwater. The organising committee
would love to have our students join in the celebration
and there will be a couple of opportunities to involve the
students in the ceremony. (Honour Roll will be red and
poppies placed in rememberance). Thank you to those
families who have indicated they will be there on the
day. We currently have 8 children attending. If you are
available on the day, we would love to see you there. The
service will commence at 10.30am.
1000 Words Art and Literacy Program
What is it?
The program aims to
implement creative ways
for students to harness art
potential and improve
literacy outcomes through
artistic discussions, creative writing and vocabulary
enrichment.
What about our school?
We are participating in this program again this year! Over
the next couple of weeks students will be viewing and
discussing works of art from local artists.
Teachers will be inspiring students to
compose written responses to submit to
the Northern Rivers Community Gallery
in Ballina. Some of these will be displayed
alongside the relevant artwork in the
December exhibition.
Can we see them?
Yes! The whole school is travelling
by bus to view the exhibition and
our written works. A local artist will
discuss their life as an artist,
inspirations, materials, colour use and anything else
students may like to know. It is a wonderful opportunity
to learn and ask lots of questions.
When is it on?
This exciting excursion is happening Friday, 14 December
2018! Please return the permission note attached to this
newsletter.
Mrs Bebb.
P&C Meeting
Next Tuesday 13 November the P&C will hold its first
meeting for Term 4. There will be a number of topics up
for discussion and we welcome anyone from our school
community to come along. The meeting commences at
4.30pm and will be held in the Library
Intensive Swimming Our Intensive Swimming Program is organised to
commence on Monday 25 November at the Woodburn
Pool. The ten day program will have planned activities for
every student in the school. The viability of the program is
governed by all students being involved. There will be no
teaching staff remaining at school during the swimming
session which is from 11.30am to 12.30pm.
The junior program involves water
confidence and stroke development
while the senior program includes
stroke improvement and water survival skills depending
on each student’s swimming ability.
We have been very fortunate in reducing the cost of the

program with a sporting grant which will help cover most
bus costs.
The total cost of the program is $25.00 per student which
is for pool entry only. This is extremely good value for your
money. Parents have the option to pay on a weekly basis.
For this program to operate we still require parent helpers
to assist with the swimming groups. The Department of
Education is very strict with its guidelines about helper/
student ratios where swimming is involved. No experience
with swimming instruction is needed. Please return
the attached permission note and payment as soon as
possible.
Uniform Orders All families who require uniforms for 2019 are reminded
that orders need to be returned by next Friday 16
November to ensure adequate stock is available.
Please check the hems/stitching on your child’s current
uniforms and if faulty please contact Helen Patterson on
0487 661 768 to organise a free replacement.
Science NewsWe are enjoying our learning in Science this term.
K/1 and 1/2/3 are learning about “Natural and Human
made materials”. Some of our children have been busy
taking some photos of different objects around the school
and reflecting on how they are made. Others made some
amazing posters where they cut out pictures from travel
magazines and glued them under headings. Some of the
older students in these classes have been thinking about
how different materials can be recycled like plastic, glass
and metal. I have been collecting some of their work which
is now displayed in the Library.
4/5/6 Class are learning about “Beneath our Feet” where
we are investigating about different types of mining in
Australia. We have looked at different ways that mining
has an impact on our nation and the environment. We are
about to embark on discovering the different components
of soil and how we can improve soil with the use of
compost. There is so much to learn about this term in
Science.

Library NewsNew books have joined the shelves again this week. We
have some new Solar System books which are easy to
read. This topic is particularly popular with the K/1 class.
One student will be very excited as she always loves to
read any book she can find about Space. There is also a
new book for all ages called “A walk in the bush” by Gwen
Perkins. It has amazing text and attractive pictures.
Our K/1 class have continued to learn about Narelle
Oliver’s books. This week we read “Sand swimmers”
together, which is a book all about different animals that
live in our deserts. We had a very engaging discussion
about how these animals are suited to their environment.
The students draw some amazing pictures which are on
display in the Library.
So far this term the best class for borrowing is K/1 class.
4/5/6 and 1/2/3 are very close behind. Let’s see who wins
this term! Please remember to bring your Library bag each
week.

The Child Oral Health Service would like to remind parents and carers that teeth are important for normal development, function and health. They help children eat, speak and smile.
Poor oral health can have adverse effects on growth, self esteem, nutrition and social behavior. Adult molars erupt behind the baby molars at about 6 years of age. Children need help to clean their teeth effectively Help your child to brush their teeth until age 8-10. Use a small amount of fluoride toothpaste, encourage children to spit out not rinse.
