Carols night I would like to congratulate the P&C, and in particular the Social Committee, for their wonderful effort in organising the Carols night. Once again our school band was fantastic, the choir delightful, the food scrumptious and even I did a little bit of Christmas shopping. WHAT A MAGNIFICANT WAY TO END THE YEAR!!! Schoolkids Bonus The Schoolkids Bonus can help lighten the financial load. It replaces the old Education Tax Refund and its simple: there’s no need to collect receipts or claim it through your tax. Eligible families need to register by 31 December. Find out more at http://www.fahcsia.gov.au/our-responsibilities/families-and-children/benefits-payments/schoolkids-bonus Parents’ guide to new syllabus The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA), in collaboration with states and territories, has developed agreed Australian curriculum for English, Mathematics, Science and History. Each of these learning areas includes content statements that represent essential learning for all Australian students. The new syllabuses build on the strength of the existing NSW curriculum. Many features of the new K–10 English, Mathematics, Science (incorporating Science and Technology K–6) and History syllabuses are retained. Literacy and numeracy remain important areas of focus in K–6, where essential foundation skills are developed. The syllabuses identify essential knowledge, understanding, skills, values and attitudes that students are expected to develop in each learning area. They are designed to provide flexibility for teachers to develop their teaching and learning programs to meet the needs of their students. More information can be found at http://syllabus.bos.nsw.edu.au/support-materials/parents-guide/ Student achievement Jasen W of 6R recently competed at the NSW Swimming Grand Prix at Sydney Olympic Park. To compete, swimmers had to meet NSW Swimming qualifying times. Members of the Australian Olympic team and NSW Youth Performance Squad competed at the meet including James Magnussen and Jasen was lucky enough to also get an autograph. Jasen had some outstanding results against the best swimmers in the State. He won a Gold Medal in 50m Butterfly, Silver Medal in 50m Freestyle and a Bronze medal in 100m Freestyle and 100m Butterfly, competing in morning heats and evening finals over the weekend. Anaphylaxis information If your child is diagnosed at risk of a severe allergic reaction, particularly anaphylaxis, the Anaphylaxis Procedures contain information for schools and parents designed to minimise the risk to students. If your child has an allergy it is important to let us know – see Action steps for parents. Find out more at http://www.schools.nsw.edu.au/studentsupport/studenthealth/conditions/anaphylaxis/index.php Safety in the holidays I would like to thank everyone for their support this year. I can’t believe the year is almost over. Please stay safe and I look forward to seeing everyone back at Elanora Heights on Wednesday, 30 January. Until next time,

Bill Gillespie, Principal

A message from the P&C ...

THANK YOU - It was an absolute honour to be invited to the Years 3-6 Presentation Day and present a couple of awards. TREASURER - We still require any parents with a financial background to become involved as treasurer for the P&C. CAROLS/TWILIGHT MARKETS - Congratulations to the Social/Band Committee on a spectacular event to finish the year. The band (under Ms Fordham) were amazing and the mixed K-6 choir members (under Mrs Castaing) sung their hearts out to approximately 150-200 people. The P&C would like to wish everyone the best for Christmas and New Year and look forward to seeing you 2013. Thankyou everyone for your support in 2012. Justin Wolfe P&C President

(Please return slip to Office.)

Carols Night What another night of entertainment, an abundance of riches, spoilt for choice. We had the Senior and Junior Bands playing and the school choirs filling in the gap while the band caught its breath. It did actually turn out to be night of magnificence, despite cancellation of the Mars trip. What a wonderful sight to see so many families enjoying an evening on the village green, produce, art and craft and entertainment aplenty. If only there were more sausages and buns, you certainly are a hungry lot!

The hugest thank yous to the P&C Social Committee for organising such a complex event, the Band and Frances for their absorbing excellence, energy and entertainment, once again, Mr O’Reilly for his invaluable help setting up the Band’s requirements and our ‘5-hat’ BBQ chefs for their epicurean delights, clearly it’s not just the Band students who are talented! New Band Students for 2013 There are not enough thank yous in the world to adequately express our gratitude to all parents who completed their paperwork on time or who advised they will not be joining next year. For those who have done neither, PLEASE advise us ASAP as to your intentions, we want to enjoy our summer holiday too. This Week’s Rehearsals Only one this week and its Band Party time! There are no early morning rehearsals this week (yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus), only the big gig this Tuesday afternoon. Who - All Junior Band and Senior Band Members Where- In the Band Demountable When - Tuesday 18/12/12 Time - Straight after school at 3pm till 5pm. We will all rehearse together at 3pm for an hour and the Band Party will start at 4pm. Parent helpers are more than welcome to assist! Bring - Instrument, cleaning kit, music AND A PLATE OF SOMETHING YUMMY PLEASE All School Hire Instruments are to be returned this Tuesday. Returning Members in 2013 Fee deposits are not required for returning members. We intend to run 4 Bands next year. There will be a Beginners Tutorial group made up new Band students for Terms 1 and 2. These students will form a Junior Band in Terms 3 and 4. Auditions for next year’s Senior and Intermediate Bands will be completed on Tuesday and we will email invitations later this week. The Senior Band will roll on as usual and a Stage Band will form at the earliest opportunity, Term 1.

Tentative rehearsal times for Terms 1 and 2 in 2013 are: Tuesday am: Senior Band: Brass Tuesday pm: 3.00pm to 4.00pm, Intermediate Band Wednesday am: Senior Band: Woodwind Thursday pm: 3pm to 4pm Intermediate Band 4pm to 5pm Senior Band Combined Rehearsal (time change affects Senior

brass only) 5pm to 5.30pm Stage Band These times will be confirmed after we have finalised the composition of each Band. Rehearsal times for Terms 3 and 4 will be advised as early as possible in Term 1. Congratulations Jamie M (6C) and Lachlan M (4J) have also been invited to join the NSSWE Junior wind ensemble for 2013 after successfully auditioning a month or so ago. Congratulations Jamie and Lachlan, a magnificent achievement. Season’s Greetings On behalf of the Band Committee I extend best wishes to all Band families (and everyone else of course) for a safe and happy holiday break. ‘tis also the opportunity to thank everyone who has contributed to a wonderful year of music. There is a cast of thousands, who, in so many different ways contribute to a vibrant band program. There are the teachers who champion the Band and give us the opportunity to perform regularly at school assemblies, well, we are part of the performing arts! Thank you. There are the wonderful admin staff at school who support the Band, so much so, and for their protection, their activities come under the auspices of the Official Secrets Act. Thank you. The parents of the quite extraordinary students who make up our merry troupe. I’ll try to limit the emails over the holiday break to about one gazillion, maybe two, you put up with a lot, so thank you for your perseverance, patience, support, the hurried rearrangement of weekend schedules to get these kids to performances and the juggling of weekday schedules to get them to rehearsals. A massive thank you to the Band students who do amazing things and come together across a range of school years to form a tight knit, supportive and cohesive unit. Your maturity and ability are way beyond your years. A sad but satisfying farewell to all Year 6 members; played strong, done fine. Thank you. To the tutors; thank you for nurturing and developing such stunning talent year after year. To my fellow committee members who experience, all too often and first-hand, the lunatic in charge of the asylum. Your stoicism has no bounds and your gracious humour makes the experience much more enjoyable than it should be. I’m very fortunate indeed. Thank you. Frances, our Band Director. Your passion, enthusiasm and inspiration will be with all who come near your path, from all of us, thank you for your tireless contribution to beautiful music and the development of a tight and entertaining Band. To all; a very merry Christmas, a happy New Year, we look forward to your company next year.
