In this edition:

• Book Fair

• Relay for Life

• UNSW Awards

Dear Students, Parents/Caregivers and Friends

What a fantastic response from our school

community for the Aussie Book Fair! The ‘shop’ has

been well supported so a huge thank you to all. It is

your children that will be benefiting from your

purchases as the Book Fair promotes reading and

enjoyment of books. Our school Library will also

benefit.

The costumes worn by students and staff for the

Aussie free dress day were fantastic. Sadly this

uncreative body could only come up with an Aussie

principal idea. This is nothing in comparison to the

gumnut baby or the Ned Kellies or the Barrier Reef or

the swagmen or The Wiggles or the pavlova etc. Well

done to you all!

Presenting the UNSW test certificates at Tuesday’s

Parade with Mrs Lang, Head of Curriculum, was very

rewarding. 35 of our Year 3-6 students put

themselves out there to do external testing and did

so very well. See further in the newsletter for

information about these students. Congratulations to

you all for achieving great things. And thank you to

Mrs Lang for being the coordinator of the testing.

Congratulations to our Relay for Life team again this

week following the actual event on Saturday. Not

only did our team win the Best Dressed team with

their Dr Seuss theme but also Jack Hutchinson was

the highest individual fundraiser of anybody who

participated in this year’s event for the Banana Shire.

Great work, Team Moura!!

Best wishes are extended to our Gala Day participants

who head to Theodore tomorrow for Viva 7’s and

netball games with their Dawson Valley colleagues. A

great day out will be had by all! Lots of water and

sunscreen will be needed.

Next week we look forward to celebrating World

Teachers’ Day, participating in Day for Daniel, hosting

Prep Transition sessions and having fun at the P&C

Trivia Night. No dull moments to be had next week at

Moura SS!

LEADERS 2017

Our Year 5’s have begun their journey towards

becoming Senior students and leaders of our school

in 2017. In the next couple of weeks they will prepare

their nominations for school and/or house captains

and have a ‘chat’ with Miss Bowkett. Attendance

at/above 92% and reaching the Gold Certificate for

following our 4B’s are essential for nominating to be a

captain. Good luck to you all!

HOT WEATHER

It is extra important during hot weather for students

to ensure they have water bottles that can be used

during class time and a broad brimmed hat. It is very

disappointing on a daily basis to see the number of

students who do not bring hats and who do not drink

sufficient water. This is despite many reminders!

Hats hats hats please!!! And only water in water

bottles.

RESPONSIBLE BEHAVIOUR PLAN FOR STUDENTS

Further in the newsletter you will find information

about What is effective discipline? from the

Kidsmatter website. There are some great tips

presented.

UNSW Awards

39 students participated in one or more of the UNSW

tests for either English, Mathematics, Spelling, Writing

or Science this year. The UNSW tests are offered to

students who have received either an A or a B in their

English, Mathematics or Science on their last report

use higher order thinking skills in order to complete

the tests.

Out of the 39 students who sat one or more of the tests,

22 students, or 62%, were awarded either a Merit,

Credit or Distinction for their achievements on a

particular test. High Distinctions are awarded to

What is effective discipline? (Part 1)

Often when we read or hear the word ‘discipline’ it

seems to mean punishing children when they do

something wrong. In fact, the word ‘discipline’ means

to teach. Effective discipline helps to prepare children

for knowing what to do and how to behave in a range

of situations. Having good information about discipline

practices that have been found to be effective for

supporting children’s development and mental health

and wellbeing can help parents and carers make the

sometimes difficult job of parenting a little easier.

Effective discipline is important for:

• protecting children from danger and helping them

to feel safe and secure

• teaching children to understand and care about

others

• teaching children emotional self-control and self-

direction

• helping children to develop a sense of responsibility

• teaching children values

• helping children to be happy and well adjusted.

Positive and supportive environments for learning

Discipline techniques are most effective when

children feel cared for and know that their needs will

be met.

Quality time

Ensuring that there are times in your day for

appreciating and enjoying your children’s company is

very important for building and maintaining positive

relationships. Taking a little time for playing and having

fun together helps everyone relax and encourages

caring and cooperation. As children get older, you may

find that having time to talk together is important for

maintaining close relationships. Time to talk, and more

importantly time to listen, helps children to feel

understood and supports positive self-esteem.

Positive attention

Giving children regular attention helps to meet their

needs for care. Providing attention to children when

they are doing something positive makes it more likely

they will continue to seek parents’ and carers’

attention through positive rather than negative

behaviour. Simple acknowledgements are very

effective ways for parents and carers to provide

positive attention to children, for example: “Thanks for

picking up your toys,” “Well done for finishing your

homework before dinner,” or “You played really well

today. It’s great to see you getting along and having

fun.”

Advance Australia

(Book) Fair

Book Fair is a week that the children enjoy each

year and it was fantastic to see so many parents,

once again, supporting this venture in our school.

Yesterday’s ‘dress up’ demonstrated the

creativity and penchant for craft that so many of

our parents obviously possess! Congratulations

to Blinky Bill, Snugglepot and Crocky the

Crocodile who were judged to be ‘best dressed’.

Speaking of artistic talent, a huge thank you must

be extended to Rachel Theodore and Rachel

Watson (is there something in a name?) for

transforming our library into the Australian bush.

The Australian bush animals were so realistic that

some small children were spotted patting the

wombat and giving the kangaroo a sneaky kiss on

the nose!

Enjoy a few snaps from yesterday’s festivities.

Thanks for shopping,

Day for Daniel

The 12th annual Day for Daniel 2016 will be held

on Friday the 28th October. Wear Red and

Educate is the theme of for Day for Daniel as we

strive to have schools, kindergartens, businesses

and communities across Australia take action and

conduct child safety activities in their local

communities to help in keeping kids safe.

Students are encouraged to wear something red

whether that be a pair or red socks, a red ribbon

or a red t-shirt. Please no hair colour.

The Day for Daniel is a National Day of Action to

raise awareness of child safety, protection and

harm prevention.

It is about educating children and adults about

keeping kids safe through child safety and

protection initiatives. It aims to help empower

our children to Recognise, React and Report if

they feel something is not right. Day for Daniel is

also an opportunity for Australians to make a

statement that crimes against children are not

acceptable in modern Australia.

RELAY FOR LIFE 2016

Last weekend, we had a team of 10 highly energetic

kids from our school participate in the Banana Shire

Relay for Life event in Biloela. In case you are unaware

of what this is, it is a fun and moving overnight

experience that raises vital funds for the Cancer

Council’s research, prevention and support services.

Our total fundraising amount was approximately

$3500. Jack Hutchinson was awarded for raising the

highest individual amount out of everyone who

attended the event. His amazing efforts raised $1100.

We also came away from the weekend with not only

raising a fabulous amount of money for this great

cause but we also won ‘Best Dressed Team’.

2M have been working on our narrative writing skills

by creating new events for our classroom stories.

This time, we read about Toy Boat, who was lost at

sea. Little Toy Boat kept finding himself being swept

away in the big waves by other different types of

bigger, scarier, real boats. As a class, we decided that

Little Toy Boat should come across a whale in his

troubles!

“Suddenly, he saw something that looked

like a fish tail. He could hear high pitched

humming noises. He felt his sails vibrating

from an unusual song. His sails were

shaking even more now. It was a whale! It

said, ‘Move along now Little Toy Boat”

and he was tossed among the huge

waves. He was so anxious he couldn’t

help crying. His hull was full and had half

sunk when the whale saved him! “No

mate of mine left behind,” he said and

took him home and they were friends

forever.” Written by Giselle Dickson, 2M

great to see that so many parents have registered

already.

Over time, QParents will become an integral part of

how we communicate with parents. Get on board now

to enjoy the ease and convenience that QParents

World Teachers’ Day

Friday, 28th October

Every day, Queensland teachers

are making a difference

educating and inspiring young

people across our state.

World Teachers' Day is an

opportunity to acknowledge our

teachers and say thanks for the

significant contributions they

make in our classrooms and

communities.

Non-teaching staff decided to

celebrate World Teachers’ Day

early this year by hosting a

morning tea today.

Thank you to all of our amazing

Teachers for the wonderful work

they do each and every day.
