3rd Annual Summer Sessions Shopping Party at South Curl Curl SLSC To benefit research for Friedreich’s Ataxia

Fifteen year old, Jai Maurice currently studying at St Paul’s in Manly is one of the of the 30,000 Australian’s who have Friedreich Ataxia, a genetic neurological degenerative condition that gradually affects a person’s coordination, mobility, speech and heart function. Generally the symptoms are gradual and progressive and usually start around about the age of 12. Jai’s mother, Kaija said, “It was as if my son had two left feet. Just walking around the house was like an obstacle course for Jai, 13. When he was younger we’d laughed it off as clumsiness”. But now as he reached his teenage years, it seemed to be getting worse. Jai also had a heart condition, hypotrophiccardiomyopathy, that he wasdiagnosed with at age seven. It meant he couldn’t be as active as other kids his age in case he overexerted his heart. Jai has since discovered there’s no cure for Friedreich’s ataxia or even a treatment and he’s dedicated himself to trying to help other kids like him. Proceeds from the third annual summer sessions shopping party will benefit the research to find a cure for this rare disease.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
FA (Friedreich’s Ataxia) is a degenerative, genetic, neurological disease that
appears predominantly in children and teenagers, usually first diagnosed between
the ages of 5 and 15. FA causes difficulty walking, talking and performing everyday
functions, soon leaving sufferers wheelchair bound.
FA is a progressive condition and in time causes weakening of the limbs and in turn
complete incapacitation. It does not affect intellectual capacity. It’s associated with
vision, hearing and speech failure, combined with severe heart disease, scoliosis and
diabetes and greatly reduced life expectancy.
