DAY FOR DANIEL

Wear a touch of RED Friday 26th of October

A reminder tomorrow, Saint Paul’s Primary School will be holding a Day for Daniel. Day for Daniel is a National Day of Action to raise awareness of

child safety, protection and harm prevention.

The objectives of Day for Daniel are:

To raise awareness about child safety and protection and to promote a safer community for children. To educate children regarding their personal safety and empower them to Recognise, React and Report. Children are to wear their school uniform and a touch of red on this day. This could be a red ribbon, red socks or a red badge.

For more information on Day for Daniel or the Daniel Morcombe Foundation, please visit: http://www.dayfordaniel.com.au/

What can you do at home? Have conversations about personal safety should not be scary for children. Being open and approachable is the most important thing; • Discuss who they could talk to if they felt unsafe and what they could do. • Practice using stories and scenarios to problem solve. Do not always make these about strangers. • Reinforce basic safety messages and ensure children know the phone numbers of people they can call on for help or to talk to. • Explain that it is ok to say no to an adult or child if they are doing something that is not ok or makes the child feel unsafe. Let the child know they will not get into trouble if they tell you about an unsafe secret someone has asked them to keep. • Remind your child that it is always ok to talk to you, no matter what the issue, you care about them and want to help them to stay safe.

Social and Emotional Learning at Saint Paul’s You may have heard your children talk about the RRRR program (Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships). We are using this social and emotional learning program in our school. It provides learning materials that have been de-signed to develop students' emotional and positive relationship skills. Efforts to promote social and emotional skills in children and young people has been shown to improve health related outcomes and subjective wellbeing. This program also aims to reduce antisocial behaviours. The Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships (RRRR) cover eight topics of Social and Emotional Learning across all levels of prima-ry and secondary education:

Emotional Literacy This is the ability to understand ourselves and other people. It includes the ability to understand, express and manage emotions and respond appropriately to the emotions of others.

Personal Strengths Identifying the strengths of individuals and the strengths of others promotes student wellbeing, positive behav-iour and academic achievement.

Positive Coping and Stress Management Identifying and understanding different types of coping strategies. Students are introduced to the concept of us-ing positive self-talk to approach and manage challenging situations. Students learn to recognise their personal signs and symptoms of stress, and to develop strategies that will help them to deal with stress effectively.

Problem-solving and Help-seeking Developing skills to think through, consider options and the possible consequences as a part of making choices. Through these skills, students will have the knowledge to seek help for themselves or others and support them-selves and others in challenging times.

Gender and Identify Knowledge that boys and girls, and men and women are of equal value and should have equal opportunity. This topic promotes respect for diversity and difference.

Positive Gender Relations Understanding that everyone is entitled to respect, regardless of gender diversity and that violence and harass-ment is not acceptable within or between genders.
