Term 4 Week 5 Newsletter
Principal’s Message
Welcome to Term 4 and the exciting opportunities that lay ahead. The term has started wonderfully with Swim Scheme being a success, engaging with our new students for 2019 during Kindergarten Orientation and rehearsals are in full swing for the end of year performance. Our teachers are analysing work samples and collecting data to inform student reports which will be sent home on Friday 14th December.
End of Year Expectations
Students in Year 6 are coming to the end of their primary school career. This is a time when all Year 6 students look forward to a number of special privileges including the Year 6 Farewell.
Over the coming term Year 5 students will be considered for many of the student leadership roles within the school, including school captains and vice-captains. Therefore, they need to ensure that their attitude and behaviour sets a model for all other students in the school.
We believe it is important that the last experiences in primary school for all Year 6 students should be positive ones. We also believe that it is our responsibility to ensure that no individual or group should spoil this important time for others.
Consequently, I have set out below the expectations of behaviour by students over this term. Students will demonstrate:
Respect for our school, fellow students, members of the school staff and visitors to the school and will treat others as they would like to be treated;
Responsibility by being on time and prepared to learn and by managing their own behaviours and belongings;
Relationships where they work together positively and ask for help when needed;
Persistence in completing all set work in an efficient and quality manner;
Pride in representing the school in a manner that brings credit to oneself and the school. This includes the wearing of appropriate school uniform.
Compliance with these core values will ensure that everyone will finish the term happily and successfully.
It is important that all students and their parents understand that failure to comply with these expectations will result in disciplinary action. This action could include, (but is not limited to) detention, suspension from school and the withdrawal of a student’s invitation to participate in one or more of the end of year activities. All these activities are privileges.
Parent Concerns
A parent and community guide for seeking information and expressing concerns follows.
Occasionally parents or other members of the school community may need to approach the school to:
• discuss the progress or welfare of your own child
• express concern about actions of other students
• enquire about school policy or practice
• express concern about actions of staff members.
It is therefore necessary to have procedures that will help solve problems as soon as possible so that a safe and harmonious school environment is maintained. The best results usually flow from working together.
Parents can:
• directly contact the child’s teacher either by
note, by phone, through Dojo or Seesaw or in
person to arrange a suitable time to discuss any
issues
• for more serious concerns, contact the office,
state the nature of your concern and arrange a
suitable time to talk with the appropriate staff
member
• contact the principal for other problems.
Villawood North Public School - Newsletter
In very rare cases, where people wishing to express
concerns, do so in an aggressive, threatening or violent
manner, the principal (or nominee) has the legal
authority under the ‘Enclosed Lands Act’ to:
• direct the person to immediately leave the
grounds
• call the police to remove the person should
he/she refuse
• withdraw future permission (by letter) for the
person to enter the grounds without
permission of the principal seek further legal
avenues.
I am more than happy to talk to you about your
concerns but I strongly encourage you to talk to your
child’s teacher first. Quite often your child’s teacher
can answer your questions, particularly in relation to
academic progress, behaviour or extracurricular
activities.
If you need to talk to your child’s teacher, you can make
an appointment either by phoning the school and
asking the teacher to call you back or writing a brief
note requesting a meeting date and time. In order for
the teacher to be prepared for meeting with you it is
important to indicate the subject of your concern. This
allows the teacher to be prepared for the meeting and
assists you to have some resolution. In some cases you
may not be able to speak to your child’s teacher and
you may ask to speak to your child’s Stage Supervisor.

As part of our annual planning process, we need to
ascertain the number of children who will be enrolled
at Villawood North PS in 2019 (except Year 6).
Enrolment numbers need to include all students from
Kindergarten to Year 5 who are presently enrolled and
will be returning next year and all new enrolments for
2019.
Principal’s Message
To assist us with this task parents are asked to notify us
now if they know their child/children will not be
attending Villawood North PS in 2019. If you are aware
of any families who wish to enrol their children at
Villawood North PS next year, please ask them to
contact the school on 9724 1423 as soon as possible.

SRC News
Villawood North's SRC meet every second week and discuss
issues that are of importance to them and the school. This
term the SRC wanted to raise money for children and
teenagers living with cancer through a mufti and bandana
day. Bandana Day took place on Friday 26th October and it
is with great pleasure that I inform you that we raised
$926.50 for CanTeen, the Australian organisation or young
people living with cancer.
We should all be very proud of our efforts! Well done!
Thank you!

Kindergarten have been involved in lots of exciting
learning experiences!
This term in Science, students are learning all about the
weather. Kinder have enjoyed investigating the
different seasons and recording the daily weather.
Students will also be involved in many hands on tasks
including making their own kites and wind testers.
Students are enjoying maths time, where they have
been learning how to share objects to solve problems
like, “If 8 marbles are shared between 4 friends, how
many does each friend get?” Students have learnt how
to record their sharing by using pictures and numerals.
Take a look at some of their fantastic drawings below!
Miss Nong and Miss Iskander are busily teaching our
students dance routines to be performed at our
school’s end of year production of ‘Peter Pan’. We have
some fantastic dancers in Kinder who can’t wait to show
you their moves. Stay tuned!
Kindergarten continue to bring a smile each day to
school, ready to learn and try their best.
We thank you for your continued support.
Kindergarten Teachers.
This term Stage 1 went on a wonderful excursion to the Australian Museum. We have been learning all about dinosaurs, their habitats and what caused their extinction.
At the museum, we did a T. Rex autopsy and explored
how the 65 million year-old-beast lived and its cause of
death. Stage 1 saw Stegosaurus, Eoraptor and the bird-
like Bambiraptor skeletons. We even walked beneath the
incredible Jobaria - a 22 metre long sauropod. Students
also watched a recreated scene from Australia's ancient
past telling the story of a deadly encounter between a
small herbivorous dinosaur and two hungry carnivores.
Thank you Miss Lim for organising this great excursion!
Mr Green
We have now had our first 2 Kindergarten Orientation
days. The first was an information session for parents on
how to prepare their children for school. Our school
captain Ellyse and 2 of our current Kinders Majed and
Marywin did a fantastic job presenting to the parents.
It has been an exciting time for the teachers getting to
know our new students and they have shown they are
ready for big school!
It is not too late to enrol a child for 2019 and have them
participate in the final 2 sessions.
We look forward to all the wonderful things Kindy will do
next year!

Helping children with long term illnesses
On Saturday, I went the hairdresser to have my hair cut. However, this trip to the hairdresser was a very special one because I donated my hair to Variety, the Children’s Charity. The hair that I grew and had cut will be made into wigs for children who have lost their hair from a long-term medical condition. I was excited to help children in need and am very proud of myself. If you would like to donate your hair to children in need, you can find out more information by visiting the Variety website: www.variety.org.au/get-involved/hair-donation/

Where is this school term disappearing to? It is already
Week 4. Stage 2 are reading The Twits by Roald Dahl for
our Literacy unit. It is a novel about an old couple who are
just the meanest people…ever. The only time Mr and Mrs
Twit are NOT miserable is when they are playing practical
jokes on each other. Horrid, dreadful practical jokes! The
students are really enjoying getting to know the characters
Mr and Mrs Twit through this book.
Communication and Global Citizenship is our Science unit
this term. Students are learning about communication
technology and how essential clear and open
communication is to our everyday lives and world
harmony. Our Library program is linked to this unit for this
term and students are discovering a great deal about
digital communication such as ebooks.
In Geography our unit, Taking Care of the Earth Together,
began with learning about the 17 UNICEF Global
Sustainability Goals and the importance of keeping our
planet healthy for future generations. Students are
investigating how small changes in our lifestyles make a
difference to sustaining our world. Recycling and re-using,
reducing water and food consumption are all issues we are
investigating to take better care of Earth.
I know I’m certainly looking forward to the rest of the term.
Ms Fayle
We are mid way through Term Four and the students of Stage Three are working hard in all Key Learning Areas.
In English, students are examining a book called My Place. This book by Nadia Wheatley is a time machine! It flips students back into the past, and they have met other Australian girls and boys who have lots in common with them. The story is centred on a house somewhere in Sydney, and the land around it. It is told by the children who lived there from 1988 back in time to the Dreamtime. As an introduction to the book, students looked at the history of Villawood North Public School. A visit to the library proved to be a treasure trove of old photo albums filled with many photos of students, teachers and activities past and present! O6 were particular interested that reports were hand written in the 'olden days'!
In Science and Technology, students have been examining circuits and putting a working circuit together. Their enthusiasm in this area is very rewarding. I think there might be a few budding electricians among the students of Stage Three evident through the photos capturing this lesson.
As we approach the end of the year, it is important that students remain focussed on their learning. Coming to school on time with all the necessary equipment is vital! Remembering to follow our school rules at all times is also very important.
There will be many activities towards the end of the term so look out for permission notes or visit our newly developed school website.

Multicultural Day
At the end of last term, Villawood North celebrated our
highly anticipated annual Multicultural Day.
Students enjoyed performances at the Flag Ceremony,
tasted food from many different cultures at our Food
Festival and travelled around the world with our
passports as part of our Country Study rotations.
This day cannot happen without the hard work of our
wonderful teachers who spent many hours planning,
decorating and organising an unforgettable learning
experience for our students.
As always, our parent and community’s contribution to
our Food Festival was amazing! Thank you parents for
making this part of the day a success.
Finally, thank you to Miss Nong, Miss Iskander, Miss
Dang, Miss Do and Mrs Phan who organised the event
this year and to Mr Whyburn for his hard work behind
the scenes.

Busy Bees SPS Top Tip 4:
Understanding language and instructions
• It is important that children can follow spoken directions, as they are a part of our everyday life. We depend on our ability to listen to instructions, process the parts of the instruction and complete the task required.
• This skill is vital for everyday life, success at school and in the community.
• To be able to follow instructions correctly, we need children to also have a strong understanding of concepts.
• Concepts include: o Colour and patterns (red, blue, stripes,
spots) o Shapes (round, square, oval) o Size (small, big, little, huge) o Spatial/location words (under, front, next to,
behind) o Time (late, early, afternoon) o Sequences/order of events (first, next, last) o Characteristics (old, new, shiny) o Quantities (few, lots, many) o Texture (rough, smooth, bumpy)
• To give instructions to your child, you may need to start with basic, one-step directions using only one of the above features e.g. “Point to the pencil”.
• As your child progresses and they can manage more complex directions, you can give instructions like these:
o Point to the red pencil (add colour concept) o Point to the sharp pencil (add characteristic
concept) o Point to the pencil that is next to the paper
(add location concept)
• After this you can make two-step instructions, which we will cover in our next top tip ~~ Stay tuned!

Community Morning Tea
Each year at Villawood North Public School, we have a number of parent/caregiver volunteers and members from our community who support teachers and students during our sports carnivals, excursions, special events, and help run the uniform shop, school library and special religious education classes. As a way to thank all the volunteers and helpers this year, we will be holding a community ‘Thank You’ morning tea on Thursday, the 6th of December (11:00am-11:30am) in the library. The staff and students at VNPS would like to say a special thank you to all the parents and caregivers who have given up their time and energy to support our school this year. Invitations to the morning tea will go out some time this week. Miss Lim Special Religious Education Organiser
