KINDERGARTEN 2018 If you have a child or know of a child that may be starting at The Entrance Public School in 2018, could you please contact the office ASAP for enrolment information. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Welcome to Week 8 and only a few weeks until Christmas, but still lots to get done before everyone enjoys a well deserved rest. Thank you to our school community and our wonderful P&C on an absolutely amazing year, and the commitment to learning for our students, staff and families. Next year we will be looking at a number of options for the distribution of the school newsletter which will include email, the school website and other social media platforms with a limited number of printed copies available through the school office. Over the Christmas holidays the buildings that run along the Oakland Ave side of the school will be having a roof replacement. Hopefully if the weather is fine the building work will be completed in time for the start of the 2018 school year. This project is being managed by the departments Asset Management Unit (AMU). The P&C, in partnership with the school, are currently working towards an upgrade of our canteen facilities and the hall. Hopefully we will have some more news about this in the near future. In Staffing news Ms Cooper was successful in a merit selection procedure to replace Mr Littlewood who has gained a position at Mark’s Point Public School. Ms Kirsty Reynolds has been appointed to our school as an Assistant Principal to replace Mr Stefans, however for Term 1 2018 Ms Reynolds will continue to relieve as Principal of Hopetown SSP. Congratulations to all the students that have visited my office in the last fortnight to show me their wonderful writing and maths. The quality of the work is truly outstanding and shows

that The Entrance Public School has very talented students and amazing teachers. Please also be aware that over the next few weeks the police will have a greater presence in the area especially around the school in the mornings and afternoons. I urge all motorists and pedestrians to continue to obey the road safety laws to ensure the safety of our students and school community, especially in the Kiss and Ride zone. Also a reminder that under the smoke free laws, it is an offence to smoke within 4 metres of a pedestrian access point to a public building. Thank you for assisting with making safety a priority for both our students and the school community. A reminder that if you have a concern regarding a conflict or have a concern with another student and your child that it is NOT appropriate to approach the child, all concerns must be raised with a staff member, Assistant Principal, Deputy Principal or the Principal. Failure to follow the correct way of dealing with these issues may result in the Police enforcing the Inclosed Lands Act which then prevents access to the school.

THE LAST DAY OF SCHOOL THIS YEAR IS FRIDAY 15TH DECEMBER 2017

AND STUDENTS IN YEARS 1-6 RETURN

ON TUESDAY 30TH JANUARY 2018

Some kids will read perfectly in primary school and then suddenly struggle with comprehension in high school. Here's why. Comprehension help: http://www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au/homework-and-study/english/english-tips/reading/comprehension-strategies-you-can Planning for the future: Throughout your child's school life you'll need to make choices about aspects of their education and future. Here’s a selection of tips to help you plan for parent-teacher talks, subject selection, careers advice and back-to-school. Planning for the future: http://www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au/homework-and-study/planning-for-the-future Maths at home: Kids' early experiences with measurement are often based on watching their parents. Seeing mum or dad measure and pour ingredients for a recipe or weigh items at the fruit shop will often become part of their play. Welcome to Week 8. The end of term is fast approaching and many events are planned to recognise and celebrate the hard work, achievements, behaviours and effort that our Stage 2 students have displayed throughout the year.

REPORTS Teachers have been busy writing their end of year, Semester 2 reports. These will be sent home with your child on Monday 11th of December, Week 10. These reports outline your child’s achievements and areas for development of Stage 2 outcomes in all Key Learning Areas. Please sit down and discuss the report with your child, celebrate the successes and discuss the recommended areas for development. If you have any concerns or wish to discuss any part of the report, please contact the office to make a suitable time to meet with your child’s classroom teacher, during that week. STAGE 2 ONWARD & UPWARD REWARD DAY Is planned for Wednesday 13th of December, Week 10 for those Stage 2 students who have demonstrated consistent Respect, Responsibility and Personal Best throughout the term, both in the classroom and the playground. These children are asked to wear mufti and participate in a fun ‘Beach Activities Day’. Please note that the children will not be entering the water at any time throughout this activity. A permission note will be distributed to these students next week to be signed and returned to attend. Many of our students are currently sitting on 4 strikes and need to be mindful that one more incident could restrict their participation in this event. Those students who receive more than 4 strikes on their Onward and Upward charts or have been issued with a warning of suspension or suspension, will be exempt from attending the reward day. These students will be supervised by Year 5 teachers at school.

CHRISTMAS CREATIVE ARTS ELECTIVES Continue each Friday afternoon. Stage 2 are working hard on their Christmas craft and enjoying working with different teachers and class-mates during this activity. Some very creative masterpieces are emerging.

Reminder, our school Christmas Concert is set for 6th December at 4.00pm – next week. The children have been rehearsing

and refining their performances for this event, be sure to come along and join in the fun! ATSI LITERACY WEEK

As part of our Aboriginal Education initiatives, this week our school is holding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Literacy Week. Every child, in every classroom, is sharing in the reading of ATSI texts and discussing the knowledge, morals and themes portrayed in these texts. This event is aimed at exposing all students to quality ATSI texts that our school library has and sharing in the stories, beliefs and experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Stage 2 Teachers Mrs Haslam (4N), Ms Ambrose/Ms Brummell (4A), Mrs Bayfield/ Miss Cooper (4B), Mrs Canobie (3C), Mrs Kirk (3K) and Ms Wilson (3W) STAGE 3 NEWS

Hi! It’s the second last newsletter of the year! Can you believe it?! It has been a very busy fortnight, however, there is still so much more to go! But first….

Congratulations to our 2018 School Captains, Scarlett and Amien, and our Vice Captains, Teagan and Jayden. You have already made a massive impact on the students and staff of our school and I know you will all do a wonderful job as leaders next year. Sun, Surf, and Sand was a hit last Friday! Feedback from staff and students was very positive. Fingers crossed that the weather holds out for the rest of year. Year 5 News Please, please, PLEASE bring back notes regarding Year 6 shirts. The cost of a shirt is $35 and shirts are available in the office to try for size. It is such a wonderful thing for students to have and sets them apart, as seniors, from the rest of the school.

Year 6 News Keep those baby/kindy photos coming in! Time is running out and I have started compiling images for our Year 6 Farewell video. Tumbi Umbi Campus’ Gala Day will be held next Wednesday (9th December). Notes have gone out to those enrolled at Tumbi. Year 6 Mingara notes have also been sent out. This will be a wonderful celebratory send off for our Year 6 students. Please ensure notes are signed and returned to class teachers ASAP. Pedestrian Safety It has come to my attention that a number of students and parents are not crossing the road safely. Although school

zones are enforced, students and parents must obey the road and pedestrian rules of crossing where marked. There are traffic lights and pedestrian crossings around the school where you and your children can cross safely. I also ask that parents make their children enter and exit the car from the passenger side/ footpath side of the vehicle. Always remember to STOP, LOOK, LISTEN AND THINK

when crossing a road.

Kind Regards, Miss Martinez [email protected] S3 Relieving Assistant Principal ENVIRONMENT NEWS Tyre Garden Progress Our amazing TEPS gardeners have made excellent progress in our newly established garden site this term. There's been a lot going on in our fabulous TEPS garden these past few weeks!! Our amazing troupe of happy gardeners did a lot of moving soil, planting and watering at our Monday Gardening Group. The large 'pile' of soil is now heavily planted with potatoes and sweet potatoes.

The tyre garden beds have been fertilised and mulched, so we should see some rapid growth in the next couple of weeks. We have begun to harvest strawberries, rocket, tomatoes and broccoli, which the children LOVE.

Our plan for this week was to re-planting the pallet garden beds with small succulents (small donations are welcome!!) because the beds aren't deep enough to hold enough soil and moisture for the herbs and lettuce that were originally planted. We have a few big THANK YOU’s to give… Firstly, THANK YOU to Mr Kelaher, for the generous donation of lovely mulch. We’ve been working our way through it, spreading it across our large garden site, and the difference it’s made has been amazing. It smells great, looks great, and will certainly help keep those pesky weeds at bay!! THANK YOU to Mrs Tolman who has been taking students out to water the whole garden every morning. Also, a big THANK YOU to our wonderful students who come and join in the gardening fun each week - remember, our Gardening Group runs every Monday at lunch time. Any and all interested students are more than welcome to come along and give a helping hand.

Mrs Best is offering a new incentive to our enthusiastic gardeners – each Monday, students who help in the garden are placed in a draw. The student whose name is drawn can choose a gardening friend, and will participate in K-6B’s cooking class on Tuesday. Last week, our lucky winners made Sandwich Kebabs, using the fresh produce harvested from our garden. So delicious!!

Thank you to Mingara for their generous donation. Books in Homes Australia is a not for profit organisation that helps children and families develop and maintain a love for reading.
