LO: to understand what a castle is. To understand the features of different castles. Show children pictures of castles on IWB. Q - what do you already know about castles? Model how to brainstorm around the picture.Children have picture of castle. Working in pairs/small groups, children to write what they already know and what they want to find out using different coloured pens. Share ideas. Pose question on IWB what is a castle? Share information.Children to think about different types of castles: Motte and Bailey castle Castles with stone keeps Concentric castles PalacesChildren given pictures, definitions and labels to match up and stick in topic books.

Think about friends/family. Q what jobs would people in the middle ages done? What would be different?

Give children background information about castle jobs using IWB (saved PPT).Children to use laptops to look at: http://www.castles.org/Kids_Section/Castle_Story/people.htmChildren to choose one job and write a job advertisement for that role. Children to use pro-forma and stick in books. Must include: job title, information about job role, characteristics of the type of person needed, benefits of doing the job and contact details.

Q what are the purposes of clothes? Show children examples of the type of clothes people in the middle ages would have worn. Think back to previous learning who lived in the castles? Prompt children to think of rich and poor divide. How would their clothes be different?Children given a picture of a rich and a poor person from the middle ages. LO: to understand how to play castle gamesAs a class, come up with a list of the different types of games the children play nowadays. Highlight the ones people in castles would have been able to play. Q what ones would they not have played?Give children information about castle entertainment. Discuss how there would not have been telly/computer games to play (see PDF saved).Have different games to play around the classroom. Working in mixed ability groups, children to carousel around the room playing the games (each game to have set of instructions to read).Table 1 marblesTable 2 pick up sticksTable 3 draughtsTable 4 quoits (ring toss) to make and play outside.Children to write a report about medieval games. Class discussion about what foods would not have been eaten in middle ages. Children to taste variety of middle age food. Q would this be eaten by the rich or the poor people who lived in the castles? Children then writing recipe instructions for a middle age dinner. Share learning. Q likes and dislikes of middle age food.
