from the principal Bushdance. Over 1200 people attended last Saturday night’s Bushdance and

we are confident it was our biggest bush dance ever! We have received lots of

wonderful feedback from parents and community members with our

neighbours commenting that they too enjoyed the live music. I am sure that you

agree with me that joining together again was a highlight for our college and

the annual calendar. This event was a culmination of an incredible amount of

work including a 64 page document to allow us to run a COVID-safe event of this size. I would

like to thank all my staff for their contributions before, during and after the event especially to

Aidan Frewen-Lord for the coordination of much of the roles this year. I would like to thank our

P & F and its president, Mrs Maryanne Martin. The P & F cooked over 900 sausages on the night

as well as undertaking many other tasks to ensure the event such a huge success. I would

thank all our staff for coming to school on a Saturday to celebrate with their classes and their

families. It is a real commitment, service and testament to the passion they extend to our

students and their roles within the college. Thanks to all our staff from those on the registration

desk to those assisting with sales, first aid or security on the night. I would especially like to thank

our band for their live music and the SRC for setting up and packing up. Thanks to Jenny Davis

and Josh McIldowie for looking after the facilities and for making sure the grounds were looking

so good on this wonderful night.

Awards on Assembly. On the Carmichael Whole College assembly we celebrated our

achievements in sport, chess and in speech and drama. I would like to thank our students for

doing their best and representing our college so magnificently at these inter-school

competitions. We were blessed to see a significant number of Speech and Drama State

Awardees for such a small school and see the participation rates steadily increase. Well done

Mrs Marjory Compton! We also need to remember the staff involved in the success of our

students and we thank those teachers involved in these interschool events. While not

recognised on an assembly just yet I would like to thank the robotics team for their wonderful

efforts at the interschool robotics competition.

Next Gen GLS. A huge thank you to Mr Trent Welsby and the SRC Executive for putting on a

great student leadership seminar last week. In 2019 we were the very first school nationally to

have this excellent Christian leadership event. We observed some great discussions about

leadership and were blessed by live presentations from Lorne Anderson (Townsville Central City

Mission) and YWAM, as well as excellent video clips. I would also express thanks to Mrs Sue Bole

and Mrs Kay Wynne for assisting on the day. Unlike previous years, our very own student leaders

managed the running of the day and acted as great role models to the whole student body in

attendance. Well done!

Afterhours carpark safety. Recently we had two disappointing but timely reminders for our

suburb and community. The first relates to walking to school and child safety. A parent of a

nearby school reported that their child had been approached by a yellow and black car. The

student approached knew what to do and ran away from the vehicle. I reminded students on

assembly last week about the importance of not speaking with strangers on the way to school

and for their classroom teachers to address the issue in class as well. I also would appreciate

parents discussing safety protocols when walking to school given that most of our students

(86%) live in Annandale or Douglas. The second incident occurred to our Tae Kwon Do blackbelt instructor at 6:30 pm in the

Yolanda Drive carpark. He was in one of the few cars left in the carpark early on Tuesday

evening. He was approached by a youth who claimed that he needed him to get out of the

car for help. Our instructor assessed the situation and scanned his rear vision mirror and saw

four other youths waiting to steal the car. He decided to drive off and reported the incident to

the police and to the school. We have initiated measures to improve staff safety who are

from the principal cont’d working later into the evenings for meetings or for other college work. We will also investigate

ways to mitigate further risks for other college events in the evening for the remainder of the

year. For example, on the night of the bushdance local police were notified and made a

patrol around the college. If you are approached in the way described, it is always safer to

hand over your keys rather than be involved in a possible incident.

Christian Education

For the last few weeks we have been discussing Christian Schooling in more depth. I think it’s

always worth taking the time to unpack The Big Story of Scripture (Creation, Fall, Redemption,

Restoration). When we talk about these things at school we mean the following:

Creation: Hebrew explains the picture of Genesis 1 and 2 in the word shalom which means

‘peace’. Earth was full of God's shalom which is the kind of peace in which everything works

according to God's intention. The world was made for human flourishing where we could live

in joy in the presence of our Maker, worshiping God by loving Him and one another forever.

Fall: Adam and Eve rejected God's rule over them. We refer to their rebellious choice as "the

fall," and the actions of Adam and Eve continue to affect us all. We have -- through our

attitudes and actions -- declared ourselves to be God's enemies. This rebellion results in

physical and spiritual death.

Redemption: Thankfully, the loving Creator who rightly shows Himself to be wrathful toward our

sin wants to remain in relationship with humanity and overturn evil and suffering. So the next

movement within scripture shows God implementing a master plan for redeeming His world

and rescuing fallen sinners. This is revealed in the person of Jesus Christ as God Himself comes

to renew the world and restore His people. The grand narrative of Scripture climaxes with the

death and resurrection of Jesus.

Once again, I thank you all for your feedback and ongoing support. We thank you for your

continued prayers for our students and our teachers as we strive to honour God in every

aspect of our lives and in the pursuit of quality Christian education for all.

Blessings, Andrew Jones

Restoration: The story doesn't end with redemption. God has promised to renew the whole world, and

the Bible gives us a peak into this glorious future. The restoration of all things will take place in two

ways. Christ will return to judge sin and evil, and He will usher in righteousness and peace.

Mrs Smith and Mrs Hartin and their class of Year 3 students had their assembly this morning

and amongst lots of great things they shared, they reminded us of the importance of

recycling to be good stewards of God’s environment. They have been doing an amazing job

in our College with recycling and are to be congratulated and thanked. The link below is a

short video clip which I am sure you will appreciate regarding their efforts and success. Thank

you C2, Mrs Smith and Mrs Hartin for all of your hard work.

From the Head of Secondary Last week I was able to pop into the Next Gen Global Leadership Conference

which was being hosted by our Student Council Executive. There were more

than 60 students from Year 9-12 in attendance. From the discussions I had with

the participants on the day, there were some great discussions and reflections

going on. A big thank you to Mr Welsby and the SRC Executive for a well

organised and enjoyable day.

Mrs Schneider extended leave

Mrs Schneider is quite unwell at the moment and will not be returning to duties this term. I

have emailed each of her classes separately regarding teaching arrangements for the rest of

the term. I am very thankful for Mr Robertson who will take on the senior Biology and Mrs

Watson, who will be making a brief return from maternity leave to take the Year 11

Chemistry. Your prayers for her recovery and healing at this time would be greatly

appreciated.

Year 8 Camp

Information about the Year 8 camp scheduled for the 15th & 16th July (week 1 next term) has

been distributed to students and emailed to parents. An eform for registration and payment

will also be sent. With Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award starting in Year 9 now, what used to

be a Year 9 camp has now been moved to Year 8.
