TERM TWO WEEK NINE

from the principal COVID-19 Update
I’d like to thank everyone for their support of the QLD Health directives to all schools
which includes social distancing, refraining from gathering and for dropping off
students as quickly as possible. These measures will continue until we receive further
advice. We expect a new announcement and revised measures after the next
National Cabinet meeting with Prime Minister Scott Morrison. While it is very confusing
regarding ‘the rules’, I would like to reassure you that all Qld schools are following the advice of Premier
Anastacia Palaszczuk. Education is a state responsibility even though we often hear mixed messages
about these measures from our Prime Minister in the all forms of the media. In the interests of all our
students, parents and staff we continue to work hard to ensure the safety for all. I therefore thank you for
supporting the current COVID-19 health guidelines for our college. As always, as advice comes to hand
we will let our parents and the ACC community know immediately.
Reporting
Teachers are hard at work meeting deadlines for reporting and making sure our reports reflect our
mission to provide a ‘quality, Christ-centered education’. Reporting is an important part of feedback
and learning. It takes a great deal of time and effort too. I thank all our staff for the enormous amount of
time taken on these both after school and on the weekends. Parent teacher nights are coming up early
in Term 3 and provide an opportunity to discuss your child’s progress and examine ways to help your
child progress for the remainder of the year. Please continue to pray for our hard working staff as they
complete reports and have them ready to distribute after the holidays.
Worship
Teachers meet together in Pioneer Hall twice a week to pray, fellowship and worship. This morning we
were blessed by the Primary Worship Band led by their teachers Mr and Mrs Frewen-Lord. Mrs Ward led
the woodwind and the saxophone section of the band. It was the best way to start the day and a great
encouragement to all. I would like to thank our parents for getting all our students here so early to ensure
that this event was executed so well. I look forward to seeing these students as seniors who lead worship
in the secondary college or in their own churches.
Four Reasons not to worry from the Bible
With the holidays approaching quickly and with possible vacation plans now becoming a reality, many
of you may be a whole lot less ‘worried’ than you were in the first few weeks of the term. However, we
need to be ever mindful that many folk in our college community are working very hard supporting
others or they may still be in stressful circumstances as they work from home or are awaiting
employment. Jesus tells us not to worry about our needs. Worry may affect your health, cause the
object of your worry to consume your thoughts, disrupt productivity, negatively affect the way you treat
others and reduce your ability to trust in God. Worry is different to concern. ‘Worry’ immobilizes while
‘concern’ moves you to action.
In Matthew 6:25 – 34, we read the words of Jesus as he talks about this topic. He describes the kind of
things that we all tend to worry about and redirects us back to God. He reminds us of our value and that
if we ‘seek first His kingdom, and His righteousness, all of these things (the needs for each day) will be
given to you.’ That’s incredibly comforting. In the Old Testament this ‘restoration’ is also referred to in
Psalm 23 ‘He makes me lie down in green pastures.’ When you look at the green pastures referred to in
scripture here, you might be surprised that the reference is not at all similar to a field of green in the
Atherton Tablelands. ‘Green pastures’ is a reference to the sparse green stalks of grass that the sheep
graze upon between the rocks in an area that looks like desert. It grows well because of the moisture
which forms from the dew each morning. Stems of green grass grow which the sheep then feed upon
sustaining their daily needs. It certainly turned my image of ‘green pasture’ references in the Bible upside
down. Throughout the Bible God provides exactly what we need when it is needed if we are obedient to
Him.
Blessings,

From the Head of Primary Primary Inter-House Athletics Carnival
As was mentioned in last week’s newsletter regarding the Primary carnival, and
in Week Seven’s newsletter regarding the Secondary Carnival, due to COVID-19
complexities and current Red Track restrictions, both Primary and Secondary
carnivals need to be modified for this year. Some time ago now, we managed to change
Primary’s original Red Track booking from the middle of this term to an available booking on
Wednesday, Week One of Term Three, in an optimistic hope that restrictions may have been
adequately removed by then. Unfortunately, current Red Track restrictions still have a limit of
100 people maximum, and further updates from Government and Health authorities are most
likely not available until the end of the holidays. Given our current booking is the second day
of term, the decision was made, in the interests of timely event planning and logistics, for
Primary to hold a modified event at school in Week three of next term – Friday 31st July.
Mr Boyce has been conducting athletics field events for students during HPE lessons and will
continue doing that this term and next. We will hold a series of running events at school next
term, such as sprint races, however, we are still investigating what that will look like, based on
ongoing advice updates from Health and Government authorities. As we get a clearer
understanding of details for next term regarding compliance guidelines for schools, we will
advise the parent community of the event format and what restrictions we will need to
comply with. This includes any mandated restrictions regarding adults on site as spectators.
Regardless of the final details, students will still be awarded placings for all events, along with
acknowledgement of any event records that are broken.
At a Townsville Primary School Sport meeting this week, it was revealed that some larger
Primary schools in Townsville, at this point in time, are not running even a modified athletics
carnival this year. Amongst all of the long-running and wide-spread event restrictions that
have impacted people the world over in 2020, I am pleased that our students can still
participate in a range of athletic events this year even though it will look different to previous
years.
North Qld / Far North Qld Inter-School Chess Competition (online) Round Two
Congratulations to our Secondary and Primary teams from last week’s competition.
Our Secondary Teams were placed first (Jonah Forde, Jaxx Harvey-Sutton, Josefa Bole, and
Andres Perez) and third (Thomas Richmond, Tyreece Lees, Luka Hawksworth, and Harry
Dawson). Josefa was placed third individually in the High School division. Our Primary Team
One (Losalini Bole, David Cronje, Abigail Ly and Isaiah Robertson were placed 4th in the
Primary division. Losalini Bole was placed 2nd individually overall out of all of the girls in Primary
and Secondary combined. Hopefully our Round Three competition will be back to normal in
August and our students can play other students on real boards.

What do microstories, millionaire’s club and gold level reading have in common? B2 students
have conquered them all during Semester One! Our Year 5s have been reading up a storm and
using Literacy Pro to complete lexile quizzes based on the books that they have read.
Congratulations to Sophie, Archie and Emelia who have all achieved the gold level by
accurately completed over fifty quizzes based on books that they have read during the first two
terms. Archie, Emelia and Joey have also read over one million words since the start of the year,
an amazing accomplishment! Well done to Mia, Joey, Levi, Harmon and Beatrix who have
reached the silver level by completing over twenty-five quizzes based on their independent
reading so far this year.
B2 have also taken part in Storyathon for the first time. This is an online competition where
students write microstories of exactly one hundred words to address an assigned topic. Based
on the first half of Term Two, this term’s topic was ‘Living in Lockdown’. Students were
challenged to create a brief story with a surprising ending, carefully selecting words to achieve
the exact word count, whilst telling an entertaining tale. Here are a couple of excellent
examples from our class.
The Beast by Archie
Its beady eyes are staring at me. It's so quiet I can hear the clock ticking. Just you and me,
alone at last. I begin to write as fast as I can. Just a couple more minutes. 10 minutes left until
I'm finished with my experiment and then I can release it to the world. 9 minutes, nine measly
minutes. With this new invention of mine I can show it to the world and get glory and fame. 8
minutes. 7 minutes. 6 minutes. 5 minutes. 4 minutes. 3 minutes. 2 minutes. 1 minute. I'm done!
Finally! I step out of the basement and yell, "Mum! I've finished my schoolwork!"
A Different View Of A Pandemic by Edward
They have been home all day! When are they going to go to work? Why are they always
playing with me? That’s not a bad thing, but it’s awfully strange. They used to work full-time until
now. I’m guessing that they got fired. The kids are home too. They have told me that they are
doing school-at-home, whatever that is. Mum is the only one who isn’t at home. I think that she
works at the hospital. I am missing seeing her. She has also started working the weekend. Don't
ask me why. I'm going to gnaw on a bone.
I miss cricket by Sterling
I nervously tapped my bat on the crease. I was in at number 6. The final for the T20 international
season was on. We were fighting for the title and it was the last ball. Six runs to win. I was on
strike. He steamed in and bowled a fast ball. I swung at it with all of my might. I hit the ball hard
into the sky. A fielder closed in on it. It cleared the boundary. “SIX!” I shouted. I then snapped
out of my daydream. The bowler morphed back into my brother Jediah. Lockdown is so
boring.
My happy lockdown by Charlotte
Running around. Getting chased by the kids. Me chasing the kids. And the rushing wind
flopping my triangle ears. What more could a canine want? I'm a dog. Cooper Neil's the name.
For the first time in ages, the whole family's here! I'm loving lockdown. Seriously, instead of me
and the other two having to wait for everyone to come home from work, uni and school to get
dinner, I just jump all over them! During this lockdown, the kids actually ran more. I would say
they were busy doing homework, but then I'd be lying. Don't tell the teachers!

Our Secondary Inter-house Cross Country will be held next Friday the 26th of June from 9:00-
10:45am with a sausage sizzle following the event. Periods 3, 4 and 5 will run as normal classes.
Due to Covid-19 we are conducting the event in close proximity to the school
grounds. Unfortunately parents will be unable to watch the event on school grounds, however
the design of the track enables viewing from multiple locations outside of the school which are
marked on the aerial shots below. The expectation is that every student will participate in the
event, please let us know if your child has been unwell or has medical concerns that might
prevent them from running or walking on the day.

The objective of Freeze it Forward is to provide practical help through the provision of a meal,
to families who may be doing it tough.
In the L block Staffroom there is a Freeze it Forward freezer. Staff and parents can drop off
meals before school to be given out to families in need.
Things to remember:
We rely on families and staff to supply these meals. We ask that all meals are NUT FREE.
If you can provide gluten and dairy free as an option that would also be lovely.
All meals must have a label to attach to the lid of the container. The labels are also
attached to the newsletter.
Baked goods as well as meals are also welcome! Meals will need to be sent in containers
that don't need to be returned. There are takeaway containers available on top of the FIF
freezer for this purpose.
Donations for cooks: If you don’t have time to cook - but would like to donate some
ingredients for someone else to cook, please drop these donations off at the G21 Secondary
Staffroom (Upstairs). Eg. Pasta Sauce, pasta, spare containers etc.
If you need to contact us, just email [email protected]
THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!
