How fitting that I work on this cold and very wet Monday morning putting the final touches to the Winter Edition of the Terrier Times!
Along with many other Capetonians, we attended the championship shows in Oudtshoorn last week-end. I had often been told how lovely it was to attend these shows - and, I agree! It was great!
My husband was rather shocked to learn that I intended taking a dog into the Oudtshoorn Inn but soon realized that we were definitely not alone. There were dogs everywhere! Little Westies, giant English Sheepdogs and all sizes in between. We were blessed with wonderful weather: very cold at night and very warm and sunny during the day. (One really did need to dress in layers!) And, of course, Route 62 is truly beautiful - an added bonus to driving all the way to Oudtshoorn!
Our club will be holding a ‘Grooming and Presentation Seminar of Coated Terriers’ on Tuesday 23 October at Groote Schuur School’s club house on the lower rugby field (in Vredenhof Street) at 19h00. We hope to have a number of experts demonstrating the finer points of trimming and grooming some of our coated terriers. We hope to see many of you there! Kind regards, Joyce Goldschmidt

Dear Members Those of you who attended the AGM in March will remember that we had a good attendance. We are extremely fortunate to enjoy the hospitality of Richard and Joyce Goldschmidt and to host our AGM in such lovely surroundings. We try to pre-sent the meeting as user-friendly as we can and nobody is pressurised into accept-ing an office. This factor, plus the opportunity to renew “terrier” friendships and enjoy drinks and tasty snacks together, makes it a must-attend event on your social calendar! We are so fortunate to welcome Ms Cynthia Barnett as Patron and Mrs Doreen Powell as President. Their combined experience and knowledge of dogdom will benefit our club greatly. The committee has been re-elected except for Bert Finn, a valued committee member, who resigned due to health concerns. The knowledgeable Johan du Toit has, however, kindly agreed to join the committee. Royd and Lindsay Frith, even though now happily ensconced in Stanford, are still doing a great job as committee members. They are organising a CTC Charity Show to be held on the village green of Stanford on 6th October 2007. Those of you who have not yet visited this charming village, please consider driving the one hour thirty minute journey from Cape Town to join us there. Funds raised will benefit their local Animal Welfare Association. In May we hosted a successful Open Show in co-junction with the Western Cape Stafford-shire Bull Terrier Club. Our entries totalled an excellent 42. Our grateful thanks go to all the exhibitors who supported us. We trust to see you at our Championship Show in Brackenfell on Friday 26th October. As part of Stanford’s 150th anniversary celebrations, a charity dog show is to be held on the Stanford Village Green on Saturday, 6th October and it is hoped that a cross-section from the local black, white and coloured communities will take part and show their dogs in the pure-bred, non-pure bred and fun classes. Hill’s Pet Nutrition has kindly agreed to sponsor food prizes for the show and addi-tional sponsorship is being sought from various local companies and residents. STANFORD 150th ANNIVERSARY DOG SHOW
A senior citizen drove his brand new BMW Z3 convertible out of the car sales room. Taking off down the motorway, he floored it to 110 kph enjoying the wind blowing through what little hair he had left.
"Amazing!" he thought as he flew down the M4, enjoying pushing the pedal to the metal. Looking in his rear view mirror, he saw a police car behind him, blue lights flashing & siren blaring. "I can get away from him - no problem!" thought the elderly nutcase as he floored it to 160kph, then 170, then 180kph.
Suddenly, he thought, "What on earth am I doing? I'm too old for this stuff!" So he pulled over to the side of the road and waited for the police car to catch up with him.
Pulling in behind him, the police officer walked up to the driver's side of the BMW, looked at his watch and said, "Sir, my shift ends in 10 minutes. Today is Friday and I'm taking off for the weekend. If you can give me a reason why you were speeding, I'll let you go."
The man looked very seriously at the policeman and replied, "Years ago, my wife ran off with a policeman. I thought you were bringing her back."
"Have a good day, Sir," said the policeman.

Weight: 12-22 lbs Height: 38 - 41 CM HISTORY Manchester Terriers are considered by most to be the oldest of all identifi-able terrier breeds, finding mention in works dating from as early as the 16th century. In 1570 Dr. Caius (Encyclopedia of Dogs) gives mention to the 'Black and Tan Terrier,' though he referred to a rougher coated, shorter legged dog than we are now accustomed to.
By the early 1800s a closer facsimile to the current Manchester Terrier had evolved. In The Dog in Health and Disease by J. A. Walsh a full chapter was devoted to the Black and Tan, for the first time recognizing it as an established breed. The description Walsh set forth might, in fact, serve well today: Smooth haired, long tapering nose, narrow flat skull, eyes small and bright, chest rather deep than wide, only true color Black and Tan.
The early 1800s saw times of poor sanitation in England, rats soon became a health menace and rat killing became a popular sport. John Hulme, enthusiastic devotee to the sport of rat killing and rabbit coursing, crossed a Whippet to a cross bred terrier to produce a tenacious, streamlined animal infinitely suited to the sport. (Perhaps the Whippet influence explains the unusual top line of the Manchester still required today). This cross proved so successful that it was repeated, resulting in the establishment of a definite type and thus, the Manchester Ter-rier was born.
By 1827 the breed's fighting spirit had made it equally handy along a hedge row as in a rat-pit. The Manchester could tackle, with silent determination, an opponent twice its size. Ears were cropped to save risk of being torn in frequent scraps. (This also enhanced the sharp appear-ance of the expression). When rat-killing became illegal in England rat-pits were supplanted by dining halls or public Inns, all of which were infested by rats. To combat the rodent problem each Inn kept kennels. When the taprooms closed, who do you think took command? The little Black and Tan rat killers who proved their worth 100 fold to the Inn keeper.
1860 saw the Manchester district of England as the breed center for these "Rat Terriers" and the name Manchester Terrier surfaced. Smaller specimens began to gain appeal, unethical persons were known to introduce Chihuahuas in order to reduce size to as small as 2 1/2 pounds! This re-sulted in numerous problems, including apple heads, thin-ning coats, and poppy eyes. Inbreeding further diminished size yet the smaller versions, though delicate and sickly, remained popular for some time.
The Manchester Terrier comes in two varieties: Standard and Toy. The Toy variety became popular during Queen Victoria’s reign. Today, the popularity of the Manchester Terrier has diminished although this breed makes a lovely companion and has retained their working capabilities.

Coat: The Manchester Terrier has a short, dense, glossy, smooth, and tight fitting coat. The color of the coat is jet black with mahogany tan markings. This breed, depending on variety, is either an average shedder or sheds little to no hair. Character: Compact, agile, and small, the Manchester Terrier is alert and athletic. They are quite lively, vigilant, and very intelligent. This breed is elegant, graceful, and has a keen expres-sion. They are well-mannered and more responsive than some of the other Terrier breeds. Temperament: The Manchester Terrier is exceed-ingly loyal and a devoted friend to master and family. They display the true Terrier nature, are independ-ent, and faithful. They do best in a home with older considerate children, and are not recommended in homes with other household pets. This breed has a tendency to be combative, headstrong, protective, and snappish. Manchester Terriers thrive on human companionship and are very demanding of attention from their family. They do not do well if left alone for extended periods of time or they will become bored, hyper, destructive, and bark excessively. Care: This breed requires minimal grooming. Occa-sional brushing will minimize loose hair. It is impor-tant to check and clean the ears and teeth on a con-sistent basis. The Manchester Terrier is prone to cataracts, epilepsy, glaucoma, Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, patella luxation, and Von Willebrands dis-ease. This breed prefers warm climates but should not be left in the sun for any length of time. Training: Early and intense socialization and obedi-ence are absolutely crucial for the Manchester Ter-rier. They are eager to please and quick to learn. This breed does not respond to harsh or heavy-handed training methods or corrective discipline. They do best with thorough firmness, fairness, con-sistency, persistence, respect, and patience. The Manchester Terrier excels in agility and obedience trials. Activity: This highly energetic breed needs an inordinate amount of vigorous exercise. They enjoy frequent securely leashed walks as well as safely fenced off lead play sessions where they are able to romp and run freely. It is imperative that this breed be supervised at all times as they are expert escape artists. A CASE STUDY - ‘NOTHING IN LIFE IS FREE’

"Clementine has begun growling and snapping to prevent you from taking food, treats and/or toys from her. She's "feeling her oats" as most adolescent terriers will. That behaviour MUST be nipped in the proverbial bud, because, she will quickly gravitate from growling/snarling/snapping to actual BITING. And by then, it may be too late. You have time now to help her become the dog she WANTS to be.
"The program I'll suggest to you is the "NILIF" (Nothing In Life Is Free) concept. It isn't necessarily "easy" and it requires YOU to resolve that her life, health, happiness and long-term welfare are important enough to you that you will push aside feeling "sorry" for her (dogs don't understand that concept, incidentally) and establish in no uncertain terms in her eyes that YOU and YOU ALONE are in charge here (in other words, you are the ultimate ALPHA in your pack). "The 'NILIF' (Nothing In Life Is Free) Concept: "She must WORK for every single 'privilege' she is granted. You, as the alpha, and the other humans in the home, who are also above her in the pack rank, are the 'granters' of all privileges. Privileges are defined as, but not limited to: Eating, Playing With Toys, Going for a Walk, Going Outside to Do Her 'Business', Being Petted or Shown Affection, Being Allowed on Furniture, Being Given 'Treats', etc. 1. "Beginning TODAY, tether her to your waist via a relatively short lead (no
longer than 3 feet). She MUST go everywhere you go and when you're sitting and watching TV, she should be tethered to the chair leg. When you walk, or move around, INTENTIONALLY move *into* her. Make a point of doing so. In the canine pack, ONLY the alpha can move the subordinate pack members aside by moving his (or her) body into theirs, forcing them to give up the physical territory they are claiming by sitting, standing or lying upon it. In dogs' eyes, doing so is a VERY powerful message. It says, to the dog, "I, and I ALONE am in charge here. THAT little piece of land you're lying on belongs to me. I own it, and I claim it. YOU find somewhere else right now!""We, as hu-mans, INVARIABLY step over or around our dogs when they are laying com-fortably somewhere. Why? Because we're so compassionate and loving that we
don't want to disturb their peace. That's human-think. How does a dog inter-pret that action? (In other words, what does our courteous behaviour say to our dogs?) They see it as DEFERENCE to their superior position. In other words, the dog sees us moving around her rather than forcing her to give up her spot and she interprets that as we humans according HER as alpha dog status and privileges."MOVE YOUR LEG INTO HER EVERY SINGLE TIME and firmly (not a banging, kicking motion, of course!) but rather firmly and consistently apply additional leg pressure UNTIL SHE MOVES OUT OF YOUR WAY. Don't praise her for moving and don't verbally comment if she doesn't. Simply force her to move by applying steadily increasing leg/body pressure against her until she does. The moment she gives way, step into the spot then continue on your way as if it wasn't that important to begin with. This is a very good exercise for every single terrier owner to do with their little one each and every day at least once.

2. She MUST "work" for everything she gets. YOU own everything in the house...she does not. She must 'sit' or preferably 'Sit/Stay' for her food dish, in order to be petted, for a treat, for playtime, for a walk, for going outside, etc.
3. Simple ALPHA rules for your home:
She must never go out a door in front of any human, ever. She should never have her head above any human's head, ever. She should never put her paws on any human's shoulders, ever. She should not be permitted to sleep in your bed, probably, not ever. She gets fed ONLY after every single inhabitant in the house gets fed (human and canine), NEVER before. EVERY human in the house is immediately above her in the "pack rank". And will remain so forever. Growling by her at a human must NEVER be permitted, EVER, for any reason whatsoever. She must be on "heel" when she goes for a walk; she must NOT be ahead of humans. This can be relaxed after the pack rank is firmly established in her mind, but that will take a little while. She must never be allowed on the furniture UNTIL she is 'invited' by a human. After she has 'worked' for the privilege by sitting quietly and not demanding to be. If she jumps up uninvited, firmly push her off and tell her, "OFF, CLEMENTINE!" Then ignore her entirely.
She must be ignored if she demands attention or affection. She must only be given attention and/or affection when YOU invite that action. ALL of her toys are yours. Pick them up. Take them away. Give her a toy for playing WHEN she's demonstrated a positive action such as being patient, sitting quietly, or following a command. When YOU de-cide play is over, take the toy away and put it away. To a dog, whom-ever controls FOOD, TOYS, AFFECTION and SPACE (bodily and environ-mental) is the ALPHA of the pack. YOU and your mate MUST become the alphas to him. YOU own everything. You GIVE everything (when and if you want to) and you TAKE it away if and when you want.
4. Get her to OBEDIENCE SCHOOL with you as the "alpha". Make certain the school/class instructor is terrier-savvy and uses ONLY positive reinforce ment techniques, NOT "corrections" like choke collars, etc. You must go through the school with her, and you must do the 'homework' every day to reinforce in her mind that you are in control (Alpha) not her. "Now, OK, perhaps the above sounds harsh and punitive to you. Perhaps it sounds like FAR more work than you anticipated, simply solving a little growling and/or nipping behaviour. It is. But it really isn't. She should live another 14 or more years. The investment you put in her training now will prove immeasurably valuable if it allows you to keep her in your family for the rest of her life. And, truth be told, uncontrolled biting can escalate into something quite dangerous to you, to your family and friends, and ultimately, to Clementine, whose life may depend upon it."

Emma, who belongs to Mercia Potgieter in Natal and is the daughter of Fen-nis’ wheaten Scottish terrier bitch Nugget, has just had eight pups - all self welped! Like mother like daughter. Jocelin Kagan kindly offers a few guidelines to our readers...
The most important question to ask is why you are embarking on a mating. Is it to ensure that the progeny of the two dogs add improvements to the breed; keep a puppy for yourself; or to have a litter for financial gain?
Once you have that clear, the next question is which is the BEST stud dog available? Remember - never down breed. Always choose the best dog available. It is advisable that both the owners of the sire and dam sit down and draw up a formal agreement.
A formal agreement or contract is legal and binding. Ensure that you put everything that is agreed to into the contract. The contract should be signed by each participant with each page being witnessed, dated and initialled. Leave nothing to assumption or chance. The usefulness of the contract is that it provides a basis for the relationship between breeder and stud dog owner. Get organised early. Draw up the contract well before the bitch comes into season.
It is a good idea to have a back-up plan. The dogs might not like or be interested in each other. AI (artificial insemination), forced or assisted mating is possible. There are knowledgeable and professional people who can assist if it is organised well in advance. Some kennels offer this service – again, book their help.
The OWNER OF THE STUD DOG, once approached and in agreement with the mating, calls the shots. They can insist on a medical check by a vet on the bitch. Where the mating is to take place, is also determined by him, ie. at the home of the owner of the stud or at their kennels. The time and the number of matings needs to be agreed on. General practice is to allow two matings.
The OWNER OF THE BITCH bears the following costs: if the stud’s owner chooses to have the dogs at a professional kennel for the mating; transporting the dog to and from the kennel; artificial insemination; vet bills for having the bitch checked out. (If the stud dog is used often, a vet certificate ensuring that he is clear of all sexually transmitted or fungal infections and is medically fit, is advisable.)
The STUD FEE should be decided on and specified in the contract. There are a number of fee options: the equivalent cost of a puppy; a fee independant of the cost of a puppy; a puppy in lieu of a fee; a token payment. Remember that a proven stud or champion dog , or even an imported dog, can influence the amount charged. The fee is either payable prior to or at the mating, once the bitch is pregnant or has whelped or the pups have been sold. The latter seldom applies. All depends on what you both agree to and what is specified in the contract.
Ensuring that the mating consent registration forms are completed and signed at the time of the mating alleviates delays in getting the pups registered. A potential area for conflict is if the stud dog owner and the bitch’s owner both want the PICK OF THE LITTER. Ensure that this point is agreed to and noted in the contract. The choice of homes for the pups resides with the owner of the bitch. The owner of the stud dog can request seeing the pups and knowing where they have gone.

At the Rand Show Nutriphase Dog Fun Day, held on Good Friday, the winner of
the Nutrphase Agility Challenge was "Bandwith" a Wire-haired Fox Terrier.
(His owner is Pam Ellenberger.) So - quite a win against the Border Collies
who normally take first place!

Swimming is the best overall body workout for any animal. The body is lighter in the
water which reduces the load on painful joints. Water resistance, and especially swim-
ming against a current, strengthens muscles and is good cardiovascular exercise. Some
patients can perform exercises better in water because of buoyancy. In dogs, swimming
is also a reflex. This means that they will move their legs automatically when placed in
water, which is very useful in treating neurological damage. All dogs can swim or can
be taught how to swim.
Hydrotherapy is mainly used in rehabilitation but can also be used in maintaining over-
all body condition and fitness as well as shedding those excess kilos.
The main areas where it can be used are after orthopaedic surgery such as:
Fractures
Cranial cruciate ligament ruptures
Femur head and neck excision
and after neurological injury such as:
After intervertebral disc surgery
Degenerative myelopathy
Hydrotherapy is also very effective when it comes to muscle strengthening and im-
proved joint function especially for arthritis, spondylosis and conservative treatment of
hip dysplasia.
The temperature of the water plays an important role. Patients could become hypother-
mic if the water is too cold. We exercise our patients in warm water with the tempera-
ture ranging between 27ºC and 30ºC. This is ideal as the heat stimulates blood flow to
muscles and joints and reduces inflammation.
As with all strenuous exercise, it is important to assess each patient before they get into
the pool. Dogs with severe heart disease and pulmonary disease should be thoroughly
checked by a veterinarian before starting any exercise program. To prevent cross con-
tamination we also do not put dogs with infections, open or draining surgical wounds,
skin diseases or other infections in the pool.
We have had astounding results with hydrotherapy and found it to be highly beneficial
in speeding up recoveries, weight loss and dramatically increasing mobility in our pa-
tients.

THE IMPORTANCE OF HYDROTHERAPY

Seamus was very honoured to be
asked to be the Cesar Dog at the
Food and Wine Festival which was
held at the Cape Town Interna-
tional Convention Centre recently.
I arrived at the CTICC with Seamus
in tow and was stopped by some
very surprised security personnel.
They were pretty horrified that I
wanted to take a dog into the exhi-
bition hall! However, i was saved
from further embarrassment by
Kudsai - one of the orgainisers - who
arrived and clipped on my Exhibitor
badge and whisked us in.
Seamus took up his duty on the
counter top and started promoting
the dog food by allowing everyone
to give him a cuddle. We were there for a couple of hours on 3 of the days of the show. He was
taken on regular trips to water the trees outside and for a brisk walk up and down the road to stretch
his legs.
As Westies are not that common, one had to get used to explaining to admirers that he is a West
Highland White Terrier and not a white Scottie. However, after the show I think I was saying this in my
sleep as I had to repeat it about 500 times at the show! Everyone in Cape Town must know now
about Westies!!!
Seamus had a ball. He had hundreds of people fall head over heals in love with him; he had a kind
lady share her cappuccino with him (one spoon for you, one spoon for me!); a nice young man give
him his chicken a lá king; and another lady go into raptures because he kissed her on command!
It really is a real dog’s life!
It was rather amusing to watch great
big men, elegant ladies and small
children come over and switch to
baby talk. ‘Ag, shame, isn’t he cute!
He is so beautiful! Is he a white Scot-
tie? ...’
Seamus behaved extremely well
throughout his job as Seamus, the
Cesar Dog - and was even friendly
towards a larger–than-life Benjamin
Bunny who came to talk to him!
Despite having a wonderful time, we
were both quite pleased when we
could go home at 5 o’clock on Sun-
day!

Memoriam - Professor Whiteman
Professor Whiteman, a former Professor of Music at UCT, mathematician and mystic, died in February of this year aged 100 years. He and his wife, Sonia (a concert pianist and teacher) were founder members of the Cape Terrier Club with Sonia being Chairman of the Club for many years. Bill and Elaine Dawson, breeders of Wire Fox Terriers, were on the Cape Terrier Club Com-mittee together with Sonia. Elaine was the Secretary. Sadly, when returning home from a Championship Show in October 1982, the Dawsons and some of their dogs were killed at a level crossing at Lyndoch. Unfortunately, on being told of this tragedy, Sonia Whiteman had a heart attack and died. In one tragic event the Cape Terrier Club lost three loyal, hardwork-ing Committee members. In memory of these members it was decided to call the April/May Open Show, The Elaine and Bill Dawson Memorial Show and the July/August Show, The Sonia Whiteman Memorial Show. In the mid nineties, for economic reasons, the Committee decided to only hold one Open Show per year and then decided not to name the show. Professor Whiteman had been an honorary life member of the CTC until his death.
Memoriam - Jim Lankenau
We are sad to announce that our Vice-President, James Cornelius Lankenau, passed away earlier this year. He was born in the UK but later moved to first Zimbabwe, and then South Africa. Through his first wife's love for German Shepherds he was attracted to the Working and Herding Breeds. He owned Dobermans and, later in his life, Boxers. He was an excellent Handler in the show ring and also an All Breeds Judge. He shared his great knowledge of dogs with the number of seminars he presented on various breeds. A true stalwart in the dog world was laid to rest. We offer our sincere condolences to his family. Jim Lankenau had been a Vice-President of the CTC for many years.
