Tessellation Project 2016
TessellationsA tessellation is a repeating pattern of polygons that covers a plane with no gaps or overlaps.
What transformations do you see?
Typically the shapes making up a tessellation are polygons or similar regular shapes.
Tessellation Project 2016
Tessellations can be formed from more than one shape.
Tessellations can be formed from irregular shapes, too.

Real Life Tessellations
M.C. EscherMaurits Cornelis Escher (1898‐1972), a Dutch artist, created
unique works of art that explore and exhibit many mathematical ideas. He used translations, reflections, rotations, and glide reflections in many of his works.
Tessellation Project 2016
Tessellation Project 2016
PART 1 is due Friday, February 19, 2016. It will count as one quiz grade.
PROJECT: PART 1Honors: You will construct one tessellation template for all four of
the following shapes.
CP: You will construct one tessellation template for three of the following shapes.
1. square2. equilateral triangle3. hexagon4. rectangle
PART 2 is due Friday, February 26, 2016. It will count as one test grade.
PROJECT: PART 2
You will cover an 11‐by‐17 piece of paper with tessellations. You can use one of the templates that you turned in from
Part 1 or a new one that you create.

DEDUCTIONS will occur for 1) white areas and 2) lateness (10 points/day).
BONUS points will be awarded for 1) difficulty, 2) special creativity and
3) tessellating a 14 by 22 posterboard.
So how do we start making tessellations?Translation Tessellation (EASY)
1. Start with a square.
2. Draw a designon one side of the square.
3. Cut the design out &translate it across tothe opposite side of the square. Securewith tape...NOOVERLAPPING!
Tessellation Project 2016
Translation Tessellation (HARD)
1. Start with a square.
2. Draw a designon one side of the square, translate it tothe other side, and secure.
3. Draw another designon the adjacent sideof the square, translate it to the opposite side, and secure.
Glide Reflection Tessellation
1. Start with a square.
2. Draw a design on one side ofthesquare.
3. Cut the designpiece out andtranslate itacross to theopposite sideof the square.
Reflect (flip) the cut piece.
4. Secure thepiece with tapeto the oppositeside of thesquare.
**This pattern needs to be reflected as it is traced.
Tessellation Project 2016
Rotation Tessellation
1. Start with a square.
2. Draw a design on one side ofthesquare.
3. Cut the designpiece out androtate (turn) iton an end pointuntil it liesevenly with the adjacentside of thesquare.
4. Secure thepiece with tapeto the adjacentside of thesquare.
**This pattern needs to be rotated as it is traced.
Translation Tessellation with Rectangles
1. Start with a rectangle.Draw adesignand cutit out.
2. Translateit to theoppositeside andsecure.
3. Draw a seconddesign and cut.Translate to theopposite sideand secure.
4. Add colors and designs.

Rotation Tessellation with Triangles
1. Start with a triangle.Draw adesignand cutit out.
2. Rotateit to anotherside andsecure.
3. This patternneeds to berotated asit is traced.
4. Add colors and designs.
Translation Tessellation with Hexagons
1. Start with a hexagon.Draw adesignand cutit out.Translate it to theoppositeside andsecure.
2. RepeatStep #1fromanother side.(optional)
3. Repeat Step #1from another side (optional).
4. Add colors and designs.

Rotation Tessellation with Hexagons
1. Start with a hexagon.Draw adesignand cutit out.
2. Rotateit to anotherside andsecure.
3. RepeatSteps 1 & 2as desired.
4. This patternneeds to berotated asit is traced.
