Lawson’s Latest THE HENRY LAWSON HIGH SCHOOL Phone: (02) 6343 1390 FAX: (02) 6343 2377 [email protected] Volume 2, Issue 9 19 June, 2015 Congratulations to Saxon Southwell and Zoe Gavin. At the regional cross country, both qualified for state with Zoe winning in her age group. Our bowls team competed in the CHS State triples competition held at Temora last week. With the team suffering the loss of their skip, who had left school to take up a traineeship, the team of James Hunter, Finlay Johnson and Josh Edwards had to work harder, and Mr Hunter said that though they played some games well, they didn’t finish in the top five. The dancers performed at the Western Region Dance Festival last Wednesday evening. After a long day of rehearsal, they performed two pieces, Say something a modern dance piece and then the senior group danced a modern piece to Why can’t you love me? The feedback about the performances was great. Some audience members felt the Say something was the highlight of the evening. Our dancers work hard under the guidance of Ms McCulloch and their efforts are amazing as seen in their successes at eisteddfod and feedback from their increasing performances. Well done. The students from Caragabal and Grenfell public schools learnt a lot last Friday. Their teachers were students from Years 7 to 10, who had carefully prepared lessons on aspects of the agricultural industry. All this was the first part of Archibull Project. This year the two primary schools are involved, each with a calf to decorate. Friday was the start of them developing their understanding of the concepts they will need to represent on their calves. The student teachers presented their lessons over the day, eight times in fact, where they became more confident and were able to make slight adjustments to the lessons to ensure that their message was understood. Steve Pereira and Katie Guise from Local Land Services were impressed with the quality of the lessons and the skills of the teachers. They did an amazing job in keeping the primary students going throughout the day. Well done to Mrs Baker and Mr Robinson for supporting the student teachers and to Mrs Reidy for coordinating the day. The next step will involve our students teaching the primary students different skills in painting and art styles. This week, for the first time, a group of our students took part in the local NAIDOC debating competition held at Cowra. Our team of Connor Day, Tanaya Holz, Tara Schaefer and Tom Robinson were given the topic beforehand: that all sacred lands be returned to the traditional owners, not knowing whether they would have the affirmative or negative argument. As it turned out they had to argue both cases against the Forbes and the Cowra teams. Our students performed well, though not wining either debate. Mr Lynch said it was a very inclusive activity, a valuable introduction to NAIDOC week and the organisers were very happy to have our students part of the day. Next week is NAIDOC week, and a group of our Year 10 history students will be hosting the assembly to mark this special week. Come and join us; the assembly starts at 10.00am. Students have the option of coming in mufti wearing the Aboriginal colours of red, black and yellow or the Torres Strait Islander colours of blue, green and white. Year 10 have been learning about the world of work this week. They are really enjoying their experiences from making sausages to helping pre-schoolers or young students; to working with engineers around different sites in Sydney to working in retail, automotive, construction and animal care. Thank you to all our generous local employers who have provided such important learning opportunities for our students, and we love hearing the positive feedback: “The best work experience student I have ever had. I’d employ them today.” Some of Year 12 went to Charles Sturt University this week to take part in the HSC study day. Mr Rodney, who accompanied the students, said the lectures were excellent covering a range of topics from across the courses. Year 11 joined the trip to Bathurst where they carried out a field study at the Australian Fossil and Mineral Museum to support their study in biology. With Mrs Baker, they thoroughly enjoyed their visit to this small but comprehensive museum.

Congratulations to Saxon Southwell and Zoe Gavin.

They did an amazing job in keeping the primary students going throughout the day. Well done to Mrs Baker and

Mr Robinson for supporting the student teachers and to Mrs Reidy for coordinating the day.

On Tuesday night, teachers worked back till after 7.00pm, completing a half day of professional learning in lieu of the end of the year. Comments have been very positive where groups of teachers were working across arrange of activities, targeting school focus areas: literacy, numeracy, technology, and the evaluation and continued planning of the implementation of the new syllabuses across science, English, maths and history.

Happy birthday Henry Lawson. Wednesday was his 148th birthday. If his birthday was anything like this week; what a cold and miserable day it would have been to born in a tent! This week is Refugee Week and Lawson, back in 1909 wrote a poem called The Duty of Australians. It is just as relevant today, giving us something to consider. A copy is of the poem is reprinted in this newsletter.

P&C NEWS

The P&C would like to thank all parents and caregivers for their donations of cooking for the Henry Lawson Festival Concert last Friday night. A huge thank you also to all the parents and students who assisted with serving. It was a huge success and fun was had by all.

A P&C forum for members in the Far West electorate will be held on Friday 31 July between 10am-2:30pm at Forbes High School. Natalie Walker, the newly elected Far West Councillor will be speaking. This will also be a great opportunity for P&C members to discuss what they would like to see come from the P&C Federation, as well as discuss issues and concerns in regards to public education. Dr John Irvine will be our guest speaker on the day. If you are interested in attending please email Helen Carpenter at [email protected].

Cold, lonely, I lay

Watching others pass, coated

Happy, warm and loved.

Galloping, holding on tight

Kicking up the grass.

Chasing the opposition

They’re tagged, we are safe.

Dreaming, feeling warm and light

As the music plays

I am weightless, so relaxed

Music is my life.

Axl Delandro

Fill up air seeder

Out to paddock, to make start

sow, hours ‘til finish.

Jack Knight

Hard day wood cutting

Sawdust flying, logs splitting

Trailer filled for home.

Tim Brown

I love goal shooting

I’m waiting at the goal post

It’s up! We win! Yeah!
