Topography Test Review Key

1. Fill out the table below:

Picture Name What does it represent on map?

V shaped contour lines River flowing down hill – think pac-man

Hachure marks Depression, like a sink hole or volcano

Closed contour loop with nothing else in it

Hill top

Contour interval The distance between each contour line

2. Use the map to the right to answer the following questions.a. What direction is Ert River flowing?

Southb. What land form is found at point E?

Depressionc. What is the contour interval?

10 metersd. What is the elevation for point A?

140 meterse. What is the elevation for point B?

140 metersf. What is the elevation for point C?

About 155 metersg. What is the elevation for point D?

About 145 metersh. What is the elevation for point E?

80 meters

i. What is the elevation for point F? About 165 meters

3. Use the map to the right to answer the following questionsa. Use the scale on the map to measure distance

in miles from point A to point B. Between 3 and 4 miles

b. Use the map on the scale to measure the distance in miles from point B to point C. Between 2 and 3 miles

c. Use the map on the scale to measure in miles the distance from point X to point Y. Between 5 and 6 miles

d. What is a scale used for on a topographic map?To measure the distance from one location to another on the map

4. Use the topographic map to the right to answer the following questions:a. Circle an area on the map with a steep

slope and label it steep. On map

b. Star an area on the map that has a gentle slope (not steep) and label it gentle slope. On map

c. How did you know what area on the map had a steep slope and what area on the map had a gentle slope? When contour lines are really close together the slope is steep, and when they are further apart the slope is less steep or gentle

5. You are planning a hike across the island below. You want to make this an easy hike and not have to go up and down steep hills. Draw on the map where you would hike and explain why you choose that below.

I choose this route because it does not go through any areas where contour lines are really close together (has a steep slope)

6. Fill out the table below:

Key Term Definition 1 word or phrase that explains the key term

WeatheringProcess of breaking down rocks and other substances on the earth by heat, cold, water, or ice

Break down

Erosion The process by which water, ice, wind, and gravity move rock and soil

Transportation

DepositionOccurs where the sediment produced by weathering and erosion is moved somewhere else and changes the shape of the land

Deposit or Drop off

7. Fill in the boxes below by using the word bank provided.

Word BankHurricane Avalanche Rivers DeltasLand slides Freezing Chemical weathering Earthquakes

Examples of slow erosion

Rivers, Chemical weathering, Freezing. Deltas

Examples of fast erosion

Hurricane, Avalanche, Landslides, Earthquakes

8. Look at the pictures of the New Orleans Delta and read the short paragraphs below:

a. What is the difference between the picture of the delta today and the one predicted for year 2100.The delta is growing, and causes the ocean to cover up more land

b. What is causing the delta to disappear?Trapped sediment and rising seas

c. How does this example show how useful satellite images can be for scientists?Shows how they can see before and after pictures to see erosional effect

d. What is useful about before and after satellite images? We can view the erosional effect over time

e. Predict what you think the delta will look like in year 2200.

Baton Rouge and other parts of Louisiana might also be under water

9. Match the correct topographic map with the correct topographic profile.

10. Create a topographic profile of line AB below. (print and create)
